Strongest so far (3.7 at 03:15):

Changed the seismogram to the spectrogram as nothing could be distinguished in the midst of the Van Gogh soup... (see below)

    For the day:

Frequencies spectrogram, the vertical streaks indicate “events” (tremors/EQs) whereas the horizontal ones reflect volcanic/magmatic activity:
Quote From Wikipedia: A Harmonic tremor is a sustained release of seismic and/or infrasonic energy typically associated with the underground movement of magma and/or venting of volcanic gases from magma. Being a long-duration continuous signal from a temporally extended source, a volcanic tremor contrasts distinctly with transient sources of seismic radiation, such as tremors that are typically associated with earthquake and explosion.

For the last 10 days, following the count of EQs as shown by the orange bars (≥ 2.0), it now shows whatever Polly is up to as far as seismic activity is concerned:

Damn! Here we go again... from a new blog on volcanic activity around the world: Volcanocafe:

El Hierro – Missing facts and what’s up

    Posted on November 19, 2011

Photographer: Eckhard Pecher, released under GNU.

Something is twisted in El Hierro.

I have for many reasons not written about El Hierro. There are a couple of reasons for that omission. The first one is that it would mainly be speculation about what is happening there. The main reason for it being speculation is that there is not a lot that we do know. The second reason is that the powers that be seem to hide parts of the information that would be needed to write about it really.

I will though write about what I do know.

As some of you have noticed, I have a couple of sources sending me behind the scenes information. They would be in a world of problem if I released all the information I have seen. The information is ranging from inside memos and reports to unreleased photographic evidence of what is happening. Since I grew up in a publishing family, I know the importance of securing the safety of sources, so I will not ever release the material I have gotten. And since I am a Swedish citizen my protection is absolute by law regarding the protection of sources. Nothing can force me to release their identities.

Both sources have sent me memos pointing to IGN editing away shallow earthquakes of lesser magnitude in the El Golfo area. [Geo]Lurking of course went and checked the earthquake list of IGN to the spectral plot of the tremoring, and found “oddities”, that seem to confirm the memos.

    Imagery by GeoLurking

Secondly, I have received undisputable photographic evidence of a large gas vent that was open during the time of the large, totally saturating, tremoring that occurred on the sixteenth and seventeenth this month.

The photographic material shows that during this time Bob released very large pyroclasts (floating stones), that surfaced and sank after a while. The pyroclasts was large as furniture.

Also, the water was turning red during the activity. But the most important material was showing a 100 by 100 meter large gas vent that had opened up adjacent to Roques de Salmor in El Golfo.

The imagery also showed gas venting along a fissure on the northern rock face of Roques de Salmor Minor. There is no doubt about it.

The Public Authority of IGN, Spain. Released under Swedish Common Law that requires any and all authorities to release any information freely. Also Released under EU Informaton Freedom Act. The image show the saturating tremoring of the seventeenth.

The area of Roques de Salmor is closed off, everyone around has been moved away, and the tunnel leading in and out of the El Golfo area has been closed down due to the very high gas levels.

At the same time the powers that be released a report stating that gas levels had dropped, and that there was no second source of tremoring. This is a willful attempt at disseminating the truth. As we know, [Geo]Lurking ha[s] backtracked the data given from the stations and found a probable northern second source of tremoring. There was/is a second vent releasing large amounts of gas that was/is the most likely source of the tremoring.

I find the behavior of the powers that be in the area to be totally disgusting. One should never let a natural disaster become a way for personal promotion, and making politics out of human lives in danger is the lowest thing one can do. They should be utterly ashamed of themselves.

The volcano of El Hierro, the image of the week from the ESA space for November 18, 2011

The undersea volcano that has been born near the southern coast of the island of El Hierro, the image is represented in the European satellite Envisat. The volcanic cloud has discolored the surrounding waters and muddy water has reached the shores of the Canary Island.

According to the European Space Agency account, which has considered this decision 'Image of the week', the island's residents are also feeling the frequent tremors - occurring several times a day - and have seen dead fish floating in the water.

Residents have also reported explosions at sea material launching several meters above sea level. The risk of toxic gases emanating from an underwater volcano may pose to the population has led authorities to close off access to some areas.

The ESA reminds the volcanic origin of the Canary Islands and are settled on a hot spot from the standpoint of volcanic.

This image was acquired on November 9 through Media Imaging Spectrometer Resolution on board the Envisat satellite.

The volcanic crisis on El Hierro fivefold increase of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere

Valverde (El Hierro), 20 (Europa Press)

The volcanic crisis on the island of El Hierro have increased nearly fivefold normal emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, according to data taken by the volcanological Institute of the Canaries (Involcan) and have been transferred to the direction of the Plan Civil protection Risk Volcanic Islands (Pevolca).

The 8100 measures diffuse flow of carbon dioxide (CO2) reflect "an upward trend in emissions," which has reached 1665 tons per day, a value "equivalent to 4.83 times the normal average value for the diffuse emission seen in CO2 on the island of El Hierro (345 tons per day). "

The Canary Islands government has reported in a statement that "in studies conducted Involcan is found that the gases represent the driving force of volcanic eruptions and carbon dioxide (CO2) is the second major component of volcanic gases, after water vapor. ""Its low solubility in molten silicitados - magma - makes this gas to escape with their ease of volcanic systems in depth,"

    Indeed!

However, on my part it was from deductions whereas on Carl's part, it's supported by photographic and insiders' evidences (allegedly) which I am not privy of.

It seems to me that the tremor saturation of the recorders sensitivity range is being misinterpreted on many sites and blogs under "vent collapse," "plugged vent" or "rescaling" whereas the activity at La Restinga show it went unabatted whether saturation of the harmonic tremor was reached or not.

In short, how come a collapsed/plugged vent eject meter-size Restingolitas?

Hence the deduction that the fluctuation of the harmonic tremor is coming from another source than La Restingas and Polly is playing her harmonic tremor pipe organ tune from somewhere else.

In the area of El Golfo is where there is frequently a series of earthquakes in the island of El Hierro. / DA

    Earthquakes do not stop

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS | Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The island of El Hierro registered at 3.27 am on Sunday, another earthquake felt by the population. The earthquake of 3.7 magnitude on the Richter scale, was located in the northwest of La Frontera, 21 miles deep, while another 2.9 degrees was also felt on the seven o'clock, also in the municipality of El Golfo.

Also at 03.04 am this morning there was localised a quake of 3.1 magnitude on the Richter scale in the northwest of La Frontera, 21 miles deep. At the moment, IGN does not collect this shaking which has been felt by the population. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), until seven in the evening of Sunday, El Hierro had recorded a total of 18 earthquakes of 1.8 and 3.7 magnitude on the Richter scale.

    The strongest

IGN reported that the quake highest since the crisis began seismic El Hierro, on July 17, took place yesterday at half past two o'clock, when it recorded a 5.0 magnitude on the Richter scale in the area called Atlantic-Madeira, northwest of the island of La Palma.

El volcanological Institute of the Canaries (Involcan) has moved to the direction of Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk Islands (Pevolca) the results of the 8100 diffuse flux measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) on the island of El Sunday, El Hierro is have materialized over the entire surface of the island of Isla Meridian.

These measures reflect the registration of an upward trend of the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by the volcano island of El Sunday, El Hierro has reached 1665 ± 63 tons per day, an amount equivalent to 4.83 times the considered normal average value for the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) on the island of El Sunday, El Hierro (345 tonnes per day).

With this analysis assesses the spatial-temporal variations of the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by the volcanic system island of El Hierro in the context of the recent earthquake-volcanic crisis affecting the island.

    Escape of Gases

In studies carried out by Involcan, it is found that the gases represent the driving force of volcanic eruptions and carbon dioxide (CO2) is the second major component of volcanic gases after water vapor. Its low solubility in molten-magma-ago requested that this gas to escape with their ease of volcanic systems in depth, volcanological Institute reported yesterday in the Canaries.

    Image recorded tremor yesterday, Sunday

The tremor remained very irregular yesterday, say Scientists

    DIARIOELHIERRO.ES, writing (21/11/20011. 13:04 pm)

The scientific committee announced on Monday to Pevolca the tremor signal was held yesterday, Sunday, very irregular during the day, with several pulses of different sizes. In the morning were similar to those at the end of Saturday's final stretch, but after 17:00 pm there was a slight decrease. In the analysis of the data it is not evidence of a second source of tremor.

Meanwhile, ground deformation follows the same pattern of stability in previous days in the horizontal components. Vertically stations indicate El Golfo, mainly, to a slight elevation, while the rest shows deflation.

With respect to the stain, IGN reports that there was no distinct coloration and surface activity in the area where in earlier days was bubbling, reports Pevolca.

    EARTHQUAKES

On the other hand, the National Geographic Institute located during the day yesterday, Sunday, a total of 24 earthquakes at depths between 15 and 27 km, four of them felt by the population with magnitudes of 3.7, 2.9, 2.8 and 2.7 on Richter scale.

The movement reached a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 3:15 pm (UTC) and was located 2 miles off the coast of Frontera at a depth of 21 kilometers. It was felt, mainly in the town of Tigaday.

    A Forecast Remains of a 4.6 Earthquake

    DIARIOELHIERRO.ES, writing (21.11.2011. 16:05 pm)

The scientific group of Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) confirmed this morning that in El Hierro, that an earthquake with a maximum magnitude seismicity expected of 4.6, taking into account "the analysis of the seismic catalogue of the past twenty days" .

In any case, the number of earthquakes has decreased in recent days, and frequency, producing a significant record in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday "with a wave of magnitude 3.7".

Scientists confirm that the seismicity occurs in the same alignment NNW SSE, in the municipality of Frontera, but always at a depth of between 15 and 27 kilometers. The evolution of the eruptive process, therefore, "remains stable, but leaves open the scenario of a possible eruption in the North, who has not, in any case, showing characteristcs of an imminent eruption."

    Important update 21/11 – 15:09
Ian Carson did report the following a couple of hours ago :
Just spoke to guy from Canaries Geological Institute back from the Guardia Civil helicopter overflight. New vent today about 300 meters from old (and the nearest) vent but parallel to and no nearer to coast than the old one. Quite a lot of bubbling at first but has settled to light blue stain as older vent.
    - We expect Guardia Civil / Involcan helicopter images later today

Someone (Manuel74) at Todogeologia produced a graphic visualization of the density of earth quakes and came up with two main outcomes depending on the cut off point for density, both indicating a connection between the two swarms.

Shown in two S-N cross-sections, South to the left and the green spot indicates Polly's location:

    Quote Hello,

How many miles down is the Moho discontinuity in El Hierro? The seismic swarms show, I think, that it's between Km 14 and 18 where the number of earthquakes is much smaller. Is it possible that these measures are approximate and earthquakes are really hitting it squarely against or are at the gates?.

Today I started to "investigate" the density of earthquakes in the ground, I attached two scenarios depending on the "density level" selected, it strikes me that in both scenarios, the "cloud" of earthquakes seems to be linked:

    Scenario A:

In this case there is a real union between the two swarms (before and after the October 10).

    Scenario B:

In this case I am surprised that there is a third "cloud" caused by earthquakes of the second period.

I hope more qualified interpretations. I want to clarify that in the images of the earthquake magnitude is not taken into account.

    Regards,

    Manuel

Strongest so far (3.3 ay 16:46 and 21:08):

How it's looking like now from Las Puntas de La Frontera:

For the last 10 days, following the count of EQs as shown by the orange bars (≥ 2.0), it now shows whatever Polly is up to as far as seismic activity is concerned:

New cumulative graph starting October 10, 2011. The continuously changing scales keeps compressing the earlier graphs to the bottom and to the left!

Location of the EQs for the last 10 days:

Most noticeable for the last two days has been the gradual decrease in intensity of the harmonic tremor... Polly's tired of blowing full blast into those pipes and trying to catch her breath?

Scientists are trying to confirm a new eruptive mouth east of La Restinga.

The north of El Hierro remains under the threat of another outbreak, while not imminent.

    AGENCIES
    SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE:
Scientists working on the monitoring of the eruptive process of El Hierro try to confirm the existence of a possible new eruptive mouth near La Restinga, which could be seen by a Civil Guard helicopter that, yesterday morning, made a recognition flight over the Sea of calms. Some sources close to the Guardia ensure that the people aboard the helicopter are convinced that this is a new focus on the same line as the open fissure eruption, although in this case, located further east, ie nearer the Port of La Restinga.

Scientists from IGN, with director Maria Jose Blanco to the front, sent yesterday afternoon a reconnaissance flight to try to contrast the news, but did not see anything significant. However, the Civil Guard possibly made pictures, as it does on every flight made on the large patch of sulfur that invaded the Sea of Calms for more than one month.

Both the Civil Guard officers and IGN scientists have planned new reconnaissance flights today to try to see if there is a new eruptive mouth in El Hierro, which, say some scientists, would be "quite compatible" with the irregularities in the tremor signal in recent days, since it has gone from a very strong signal to a much lower, and vice versa in a matter of hours. What researchers are sure of is that along the line of the fissure eruption in Southern El Hierro, it is fairly easy to open and close eruptive mouths at any time, due to the solidification of materials.

On the other hand, the Pevolca confirmed yesterday that El Hierro seismicity continues with a maximum magnitude expected (4.6) and keeps the risk of a possible eruption in the north of the island, but not imminent in nature. In addition, the seismicity occurs in the same alignment (north / northwest and south / southeast) at the edge of La Frontera, but always at a depth of 15 to 27 kilometers. The evolution of the process, therefore, "remains stable, but leaves open the scenario of a possible eruption in the North, which, in any case, has not an imminent character." The Pevolca notes that the number of earthquakes and the frequency has decreased in recent days, although there was a significant record on the morning of Sunday, "with a magnitude 3.7."

Also CajaCanarias Civic Banking reported yesterday that they'll facilitate access to funds from the ICO-island of El Hierro, to finance the repair or replacement of facilities, industrial or commercial equipment, including those for sport and commercial fishing as well as private and commercial vehicles, agricultural machinery and work premises damaged by earthquakes and the volcanic crisis.
