    Default Migraine in Children: Suggestions???

My 11 year old has been getting migraines for many years. The migraines have increased to up to 6 times a week. I took her to a neurologist last week and they prescribed Topamax, doctor didn't want to do a Cat scan for migraine.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

I would summise that it is hormone related (depending on how many years she has had them)
Hopefully she should loose them when she goes through puberty.
They may come back during the perimenopause or the menopause.

I feel for your daughter. Migraines are much more than bad headaches. I suffer with them too.

I would suggest you don't go down the profilactic route at this age (or any age actually) just treat them as they come.

Triptans (and there are many) do a good job as they stop or help slow down the release of seratonin, which is the likely causes of migraines

Ask your Doctor if she can have Zomiltriptan in nose spray form. Tastes appauling but works. Your daugher should take it AS SOON AS she feels a migraine coming on. It should halt the headache or stop it from getting really bad. I'm not sure, due to her age, whether she will be able to take Triptans, but DO NOT ACCEPT THE FIRST THING your doctor gives you as there are many many many options.

Migraine has not been cured.......... yet, but there are a lot of things on the market that can help.

Homeopathic remedies can sometimes worsen the pain and frequency so be cautious.

I hope this helps and I REALLY do sympathise with your daughter, it is one of the most awful, debilitating conditions anyone can have!

    LOVE to you.

p.s Cat scans really don't tell either way, but you might want to INSIST on an MRI scan to ensure that it IS migraine and nothing more please God. I'm sure it is "just" migraine

Taking blue-green algae and enzymes as supplements can help with migraines.
Viktoras Kulvinskas, the live foods guru, author of "Surviving Into the 21st Century" is a friend of mine, and he had a terrible problem with migraines until he started taking those.
Many others have reported the same relief.
Here are some links, but if you google him, you will find many more.
    Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. She has had them since 3 or 4 but the freqency has increased over the years. Last week, she had hot flashes on her head/face and down her arms and legs, with migraine. I thought maybe something hormonal was going on at that time, I couldn't find very much information on hot flashes in children.

I will look into nasal spray. Doctor said it would take one month or longler for Topamax to have an effect. It is not appoved for use in children for migraine. I would love to try something that could possibly give instant relief.

Along the lines of nutrition, I'd like to add to the discussion. I am aware of a product now on the market which has had tremendous success with people who get migraines. It is made from specific strains of rice grown in volcanic rich soil and is called PXP.

I spent some time learning about how and why this works. My understanding is that certain sugars are absolutely essential for health. In modern society we are ALL starving for these unless we have a garden. The problem is that these sugars are turned into starch within 3-4 hours of the vegetable or fruit harvesting. What this means to you, if you are not eating your own garden produce, is that all your food is devoid of essential sugars.

People who begin getting these sugars (by taking PXP for example) begin to heal in miraculous ways. One of the effects of finally getting enough of these sugars is that migraine sufferors completely heal and do not have them again.

It might take about 3 months of dietary supplementation before the migraines leave forever, so you will need to be a bit patient.

As for me, after PXP literally saved my life, I eventually stopped taking it. This is because the cost ($180 + shipping monthly) became prohibitive while in the middle of my divorce. Because I understand the science, I now have a garden and take pains to purchase tree-ripe fruit directly from private parties. Although I am doing this, I can tell it is not as effective as PXP was (is). If you want to find more about PXP you can look on the internet or PM me.

people have said to me in the past it's a diuretic,,,,,,,,,but i have been munching my way through feverfew plants for over 20 years,,,,,,,,

and have never noticed a thing,,,,,,,

i used to take it for hayfever,,,,but it's fantastic for migraines and headaches,,,,,,,,,,,

there a a few different strains which some recomend more than others,,, but in general just go for it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

eat 2-5 leaves,,,,,,,or as much as you want if you think appropriate,,,,,,,,,,,

i started on feverfew when i was about 9 years old,,,,,,,,and still keep a plant with me to this day,,,,,,,

the leaves taste heavily of paracetamol and are acquired eating, but you can just roll them in a ball and swallow with water

The main issue with migraines is determining the cause for knowing the cause can point into the direction of the cure.

Yet I feel that you doctor was right to avoid a cat scan for your child. This radiation exposure for children is very dangerous.

I have heard of many stories of migraines cured with really good cervical neck adjustments. You will really have to hunt for a chiropractor who is a master of the cervical neck and who is also good at doing the occipital lift maneuver. If there is misalignment here it will be difficult to get help any other way.

In another direction there is homeopathics. For this you might look at Heel Homeoapthic remedies and they are available at www.iherb.com
I have their theraputic manual so I will list for you what is recommended for migraines.

    Main Remedies: psorinoheel and spigleon

    secondary remedies: gelsemium homaccord
    chelidonium homaccord
    Hormeel

    Phase remedies: Coenzyme compositum
    Ubichinon compositum

What remedies you select is based upon how serious the disease.

for your daughter I suggest the spigleon, chelidonium, and the hormeel.

if your daughter is is fatigued and has a very weak consitution getting ill frequently I would add the ubichinon in tablet form but be sure there is a real problem there not just fatigue from the headache itself.
The first three remedies may do it on their own. The Hormeel is specifically if there is a hormonal component to the disease process and with those hot flashes there could possibly be.
for the psorinoheel a doctors prescription is required. There are doctors and naturopaths who do use these remedies.

Heel homoepathics are nontoxic and safe for children and pregnant women.

Aside from the Heel homeopathics there is always working with a classical homoepath which would be my first option once a cervical neck issue is ruled out.

If you decide to try Heel I have a coupon for iherb. enter coupon code BAR967 at the checkout.

Bio-energy therapy is very effective--- it balances the right and left hemisphere of the brain and releases any build up of negative energy.

Hi Ketteruh I suffered severe migraine bouts 2 or 3 times a year from as early as I can remember untill 14/15 yrs old....Since then I have not suffered thankfully...
When they struck my symptons were nausia, severe headaches and I could not bear the light, and was unsteay on my feat when I stood up , I can actually remember crawling to the toilet to be sick..... My main memmories are lying on the settee with a blanket covering me which I drew over my eyes
and just staying between there and bed for two to four days. I cannot remember eating much and my mother left me there monitoring till it passed. She gave me lucosade
and fluids, I may have had annadin, I cannot remember taking them though. When they struck I felt weak and lethargic and I can remember being sick, that was probably
when it first came on....I was one of six siblings and my mother was experianced with child illnesses and in the sixties and seventies the medical drug sector was not so prelevent and grandmothers cures were still alive and well. I'm passing this info on hopefully because I hope she grows out of it, but also to let you know it may be best to let it take its coures and monitor
her in a darkened room , unless she is really upset . It s quite common i think..

Now my sister and niece and a few other people I know suffer the other way round..They never suffered as children but have had miserable bouts for years , they do
go to the doctor for tablets , I have no experiance of that thankfully........just passing on my experiance...Hopefully she will grow out of it....Cheers Steve.

Both my mother and a daughter suffer from migraine. There are products to relieve them, but nothing seems to cure them. The pressure point on the thumb base was suggested to us by a Chinese person. It does work! Though maybe not for the real misery of a thumping migraine.

I agree with everything star suggested and someone else suggested you make sure it is migraine. Many other conditions can cause dreadful headache.

It is also a good idea to find out if you can find a trigger for the attacks. It is not the same as an allergy, but common triggers for headache and asthma are dark chocolate and (unlikely in a child!!) red wine. Also anxiety and worry about school.

Most sufferers have an aura before the attack, so they can anticipate it. These can be flashing shapes or lights. Some people also vomit and become very dizzy. It is a horrible thing to have, and the effective remedies vary from person to person, so it pays to try the various things on the market.

Some migraine in children can take the form of stomach-ache and a few healthy appendices have been removed in vain!

I hope you find something to help. My mother had migraine all her life from childhood, though she had some relief with medication in her 50s. They returned in her extreme old age though. My daughter has been free of migraines for a while now. I know she takes medication at the first sign of a headache, and this seems to be helping. The severity does appear to decrease with growing up in the case of some children, so I hope that this applies to your girl.

Default Re: Migraine in Children: Suggestions

I've had the same problem when I was very young, on a moment I had migraines every evening, when I was 4 or 5 apparently. I was so young that I don't remember this well but my parents brought me to many doctors and made me do a lot of exams to try to find out why it was happening, they were afraid of a tumor or something like that. Doctors never found anything and they finally said "Well it will go away with time".
They were right about it, I never took any medics for it and with time I was having less and less migraines, today I don't even remember my last one. Yet I'm still more sensitive to headaches than average, meaning that when I don't eat enough, don't sleep enough, when it's too hot or when I'm too stressed for example, I may get a headache more easily than others, hardcore ones sometimes.
We never knew why I've had that, but today with all I've learned about the negative effects of vaccines and chemicals in our water, food and medics, I tend to think that that's the reason why. And that eventually with time my body and immune system became stronger and became able to deal with it.

Edit:My grand-ma (mother side) also have had migraines her entire life, and she has that "aura" thing that she says can manifest in several different ways depending on the person. Her aura is a "black spot" in her view, when she sees a "black spot", she knows there's a migraine coming, she then immediatly goes to bed.
My mother is a very stressed person, she never have had migraines but she often gets headaches because she's too stressed all the time.
I think there are three types of children in this, those that quickly develop a strong immune system and that can deal with all that chemical poisoning without many problems. Then there are the kids (like me I think) that developed their immune system a little slower and that have had those kind of migraines while the immune system was still building up but that in the end are able to overcome the chemical poisining. And then there are the kids that apparently need a lot more time to make up their immune system, that may have been a little weaker from the beginning, that would probably not have had any problem without the chemical poisoning but that with it were completely messed up from the inside, where their life is completely destroyed with after effects like autism and other things, and end up completely messed up.
That's what I think about it.

I'd make sure sweetners are out of the diet... Especially aspartame google "Sweet Misery" lots of brain researchers and issues regarding this.

I too had severe migraines from ±age14. Iron deficiency : yes. Also liver taxes or weak liver doesn't help where migraines are concerned. While sufferers are undoubtedly not affected by the same things, what was most problematic to me was MILK.
After many non-revealing Dr visits, i was put onto homeopathy. Homeopath noted lactose intolerance from birth and also said NOT to mix tomato with any white food, eg: tomatoes & pasta, tomatoes & potato, tomatoes & bread etc.
I loved tomato juice - had to give that up too as well as MILO - a huge migraine maker for me.
Am fifty now and liver has become more tolerant. Still no Milo though I can eat cheese, chocolates and drink milk. I limit tomato mixed with white starch dishes to this day because it taxes my liver.
Homeopaths recommendations worked for me - for many years now.
PS: I gave up milk completely for a few years till liver healed. To this day, Milo still gives me whopper migraines even though liver has been strong for a long time. Liver/migraine connection - check :-)
