Cool VLT (Very Large Telescope) HD Timelapse Footage

I had to share this with you. What a beauty.

Thanks for that - stunning. Oh for a clear night sky - impossible living in London with pollution and ambient light.

Light pollution is a real shame. I live in the country but have not this clear a view on our stars. I can see some nice stars on a clear night though.

I have a question, does anyone know what is happening here? It looks like they are shooting some kind of laser in the sky. But why...? You can see it in the video on 2:42

I Love these timelapses ! If only we all would be able to see the skies so clearly.. Damn you, light pollution.
I'm grateful everyday, for being able to look at the universe and think, wow..

did anyone watching that beautiful film get the impression we were on a spacehip flying through the cosmos. It's so easy to keep our thoughts down here in the mundane and yet just lifting our head we are exposed to limitless possibilities. Thank you for sharing this

I came across this picture. The beam is directed to the center of the milky way.

Quote When you were a kid, did you ever wish upon a star? Stargazing always seems to help put problems into perspective. Americans usually know more about and love NASA, but the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is cool too. The ESO operates the Paranal Observatory, located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile at an altitude of 8,645 feet. The largest telescope on Paranal is called the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and it shoots a super cool laser into outer space. These incredible pictures were all taken at the ESO, featuring gazillions of stars in the majestic Milky Way, the VLT, Cerro Armazones, La Silla Observatory, or ALMA antennas.

Yesterday I saw the BBC popular scientific BBC television show Horizon and it featured the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The explanation given for the laser shooting out of the telescope was that it detects the atmospheric distortion of light. The distortion is measured and the image is adjusted so the pictures of the universe can be optimally observed.

I loved the show and can recommend it to all you universe lovers out there. You can probably download the show. If you use the keywords in Google you will probably find it so you can download the show.

Every square inch of sky contains countless planets orbiting countless stars.
Fortunately for us, God sent His only Son to this one. Right.

this is part of how the image is so clear, natural vision cannot (at least mine cannot) do what this type of set up does..

even cooler : now they are pruposefully introducing flaws to the mirriors that are used for these VLT's.. they map the flaws for a baseline & correct for them with software & bam! even better images than the "near perfect" mirriors of the past.

we sure are clever little monkeys aren't we.
