During a two year 'lost' (never saw the show) period I worked the front desk of an Inn. I get along really well with nice people, the ones who need to be turned into soylent green tend to elicit a response that disqualifies me from that kind of work.

Very nice burst of energy after connecting to a
fellow villager. All of us in a room together
would be quite something, the things we could do
endless possibilities, like a massive battery.
Future projects come to mind..

My three days of darkness arrived early. As you know I reluctantly do my travels between Costa Rica and Barbados through Miami since no other options for a direct hop exist.
Just passing through Miami as a transit passenger means that one needs a US visa. Since I have a passport from a European country I don't need to go to a US embassy but can use what is called a visa waver form. These used to be handed out during the flight together with the customs form.
Since two years ago it no longer works that way.
The airline directed me to a website called ESTA where the application was processed and I filled out my data and got a number that US immigration then had already on their computer screens when I was herded through.
I was unaware when I arrived at the check- in desk during my last flight that my ESTA had expired, having expected that AA would notify me in such a case. Anyway, I was taken by an assistant to an upstairs office and allowed to use their computer to get my ESTA application form and number. To my surprise at the end there was a fee of $14, payable by credit card. Very strange I thought, and actually infuriating. But since it was to last two years I didn't think any further about it after a few days of bitching.
Just now I received an e-mail stating that my recent application for ESTA was due to expire within 30 days. Right away I felt this was a scam, not only because I knew that I had over 20 months left, but because the message began with the word ATTENTION! And the voice in my head had a Hindu accent when I read it. So I was alerted. Started to investigate ESTA and found several Google pages with different web addresses all leading to these applications and charging up to $250.
Then I googled "fake ESTA applications" and found dozens of sites warning of the fake scam sites that had sprung up in recent years.
Investigating several of these warning sites I discovered they led back to more fake application sites, claiming the correct fee was $14 when the real application is free. So I was scammed, right there at the airport, and the check in clerk as well as the assistant who took me to the computer and loaded the scam site for me are part of the ring. This thing is HUGE.
Found an article in Business Traveler about it, even though it was quite superficial.
I even found a "blog page" for the US embassy in London, written with just a smattering of grammatical errors, which discusses all these scams and claims to direct readers to the authentic ESTA site, which then also turns out to be yet another scam site. Amazing. Lucrative business, indeed.

The level of dishonesty and deception out there is really quite shocking. I'm entering a new paradigm here as I write, and am in agreement with Modwiz about his Soylent Green line of thinking.
This world just ain't worth saving.

I searched a bit more and found this on Wikipedia: the genuine ESTA application is no longer free, and the $14 which I was charged was actually authentic.

Before September 8, 2010 ESTA was available for free from the official government websites. From then, the Travel Promotion Act introduced a charge of $14. This is made of $10 which goes to the Corporation for Travel Promotion and a $4 fee levied by the CBP for administration costs.[6] The EU Ambassador to the United States John Bruton, argued it is illogical to think tourist numbers will go up if they are charged to enter the country [7] The charge has also been described as little more than a way to fund advertisements for United States tourism by critics in the European Parliament.[8]

My own stealth mode goes back to the days when ulli was chasing me around with her atomizer. Went stealth mode and was just too lazy to go back. No philosophical justification, here. It was a matter of self defense, then a matter of sloth. Besides, I do have that t-shirt that says "It's OK, I'm a ninja".
