Mining magnate Clive Palmer has accused the Australian Greens and Queensland environmental campaigners of "Treason" in conspiring with US powers to destroy the nation's coal industry.

Mr Palmer was expected to give his response to the passing of the Gillard government's mining tax at a media conference called this afternoon, but the multi-billionaire was concerned only with perceived collusion between the United States' Central Intelligence Agency and the environmental lobby.

Mr Palmer turned his attention to a report by Greenpeace and other anti-coal groups, titled Stopping the Australian Coal Export Boom, which outlined an environmental campaign designed to disrupt and delay the expansion of the industry.

While brandishing a copy of the report this afternoon, Mr Palmer said it was the result of a CIA conspiracy involving the US-based Rockefeller Foundation.

"This is funded by the CIA," he said.

"You only have to go back and read ... the report to the US Congress that sets up the Rockefeller Foundation as a conduit of CIA funding.

"You only have to look at the secret budget which was passed by Congress last year - bigger than our whole national economy - with the CIA to ensure that.

"You only have to read the reports to US Congress where the CIA reported to the president that their role was to ensure the US competitive advantage - that's how you know it's funded by the CIA."

Mr Palmer argued descendants of US oil magnate John Rockefeller had bankrolled the Greenpeace report, in a bid to disrupt and damage the Australian coal industry.

BILLIONAIRE Clive Palmer has made bizarre claims the CIA is backing green groups in a bid to kill the Australian coal mining industry.

And he appeared to suggest that US President Barack Obama was directly briefed on the sabotage.

Mr Palmer called a Brisbane press conference to declare that "an off-shore political power'' and the humanitarian organisation the Rockefeller Foundation were behind the attacks on mining.

He said the objective was to make American coal more competitive.

Mr Palmer said no outside country was funding his operations.

"The big difference is that this is funded by the CIA. That's the big difference,'' Mr Palmer told reporters.

"You only have to go back to read the Church report in the 1970s and read the reports to US Congress which sets up the Rockefeller Foundation as a conduit of CIA funding.

"You only have to look at the secret budget that was passed by Congress last year, bigger than our whole national economy, that the CIA's got to ensure that.

"You only have to read the reports to US Congress, where the CIA reported to the President (Obama), that their role was to ensure US competitive advantage and economic advantage.

"That's how you know it was funded by the CIA.''

The claims reach the outer limits of conspiracy theories and are certain to embarrass allies of Mr Palmer and severely reduce his political influence.

It is probable that any senior Liberal, including Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, will be reluctant to appear on the same platform as him.

Mr Palmer told reporters that he was "not here to do the American bidding'' and said he believed US figures wanted American coal to dominate Australian markets.

"So our jobs, our security, our exports, our balance of payments are transfered to North America when they could be coming for Australians,'' Mr Palmer told reporters.

He distributed a Greenpeace strategy document, leaked two weeks ago, which canvassed the possible use of legal challenges and a video to fight coal mining.

Mr Palmer said the document "could have been written in Langley,'' a reference to the CIA's headquarters in Washington.

And he accused people linked to the document of treason.

"The Greens in the coming (Queensland) state election, all their candidates should resign if they are being funded by an off-shore political power. It's tantamount to treason,'' he said.

He said: "So I hope that's a headline for all of you today.''

Greenpeace’s senior campaigner for Australia and the Pacific John Hepburn said it was ludicrous to suggest that a community campaign on the environmental impacts of the coal mining is funded by the CIA.

He said the organisation does not accept money from governments or corporations.

“For Mr Palmer to dismiss environmental concerns over his own projects is worrying given that his China First mine in the Galilee Basin is proposed to be built on top of the Bimblebox Nature Refuge and that he is part of a proposal to build the world’s biggest coal port in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area,” Mr Hepburn said.

“Mr Palmer need only read any one of the nearly two thousand submissions from community members in opposition to his China First mine to understand the depth and breadth of community concern over the environmental impacts of the coal boom.”

Greens Leader Bob Brown said Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman should repudiate comments made by mining magnate Clive Palmer about the party.

Mr Newman is widely expected to win Saturday's state election by a landslide.

"They are very serious accusations made by a person who is going to be a chief confidant and adviser to Campbell Newman were he to become premier on Saturday," Senator Brown said, adding Mr Newman needed to repudiate the "nastiness and falsity of this attack".

"There is no greater influence over the next Campbell Newman government than Clive Palmer," Senator Brown said.

Greens founder Drew Hutton to sue Clive Palmer over mining conspiracy claims

GREENS founder Drew Hutton is considering whether he should sue mining magnate Clive Palmer, after the billionaire yesterday claimed Greenpeace, the Greens, and activists including Mr Hutton were part of a conspiracy to undermine Australian mining interests.

In an extraordinary attack Mr Palmer said a plan by Greenpeace to launch legal action against future coal mining projects was funded by the US-based Rockefeller Foundation, which he said was in turn funded by the Central Intelligence Agency.

He said the Greens and Mr Hutton, who founded the party's Queensland chapter, were "tools'' of the US government, whose plan was to harm Australian interests to benefit American ones.

The Greens were being funded by "an offshore political power'' and that was tantamount to treason, Mr Palmer said.

Mr Hutton said this afternoon he was making up his mind whether or not to sue Mr Palmer, but lawyers have already told him he “has a very good case”.

"Treason is a capital offence in many countries,'' Mr Hutton said in a statement.

"As a proud Australian, I am disgusted by these bizarre and dishonest allegations.''

Mr Hutton said he first needed to discuss with his wife whether to go ahead with action, and needed to assess whether he had enough money to bankroll legal action.

Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr described Mr Palmer’s comments as "recklessly irresponsible'' that would “have investors and the American government wondering if some part of the Australia political system's lost its collective marbles”.

"You're going to have investors thinking, whoa, who's this, who is this guy?” Senator Carr said, adding he was expecting some diplomatic blowback over the comments.

"I expect to be taking phone calls from Americans today saying 'hang on, we're fighting together in Afghanistan, we've got a treaty relationship, do you think we'd be using the CIA to wreck the economy of an ally?''

Greens leader Bob Brown said Mr Palmer's attack on his party showed the billionaire miner was worried about the rise of the Greens in Queensland, ahead of this weekend’s state election in the sunshine state.

He said Mr Palmer should withdraw his comments.

"I have no doubt he's had overnight legal advice on some of the things he's said,'' Senator Brown said

Clive Palmer is an oligarch of the first order who is only on the look-out for Clive Palmer. He is amazingly wealthy and completely greedy, not wanting to share any of his profit with anyone. His motivation is easy to see. It's Clive Palmer! His latest appalling outburst (this is not the first from this selfish magnate) is because it has been decided, by the people of Australia in our Parliament, that the mining companies should pay a fairly modest resources tax which will be used to top up superannuation for the working people of Australia (to whom, notionally the land which he is mining belongs- and this includes indigenous people).

Iron ore baron forms $100m Pilbara foundation

IN WHAT stands to be Australia's biggest act of philanthropy, property developer turned iron ore magnate Clive Palmer has set up a $100 million foundation to support Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara, as part of a planned $1 billion giveaway.

The Queensland billionaire made his fortune biding his time before cashing in on soaring iron ore prices and recent interest in magnetite, a lower grade of iron ore.

The big change came for Professor Palmer with the arrival of the Chinese, hungry for any sort of ore, regardless of its type. He was put in the box seat when his company, Mineralogy, signed a deal reportedly worth $500 million with the Chinese company CITIC to develop the resource, which includes an estimated 160 billion tonnes of magnetite ore.

Mineralogy will set up a foundation with the money it receives from the development of its iron ore project from Chinese-owned Sino Iron. The money will support West Australian medical research, and will also go to intervention and aid to Aborigines and poor communities in the Pilbara, the region that provides the iron ore.

The money will provide the infrastructure and support for families in the Pilbara.

The move echoes Andrew Forrest's Fortescue Metals Group's focus on indigenous communities in the Pilbara and acts of philanthropy, and more recent efforts by BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto to invest some of their big profits back into the region.

In a statement announcing the initiative, Professor Palmer said the foundation would be a big focus in the years ahead, and that it was the first of a planned $1 billion giving push.

He said he hoped the foundation would show the way for other resource companies.

"The $100 million planned from the Mineralogy Sino deal is but a start; we plan to target over $1 billion of support for fellow Australians," Professor Palmer said.

"We also believe that from those to whom much is given, much is expected. Many Australians have benefited from the current resource boom as well as government and a vibrant economic system. That is why I feel we all have a real responsibility to give back to society."

Greenpeace hits back at Clive Palmer's CIA claim

GREENPEACE has admitted receiving funding from a US philanthropic organisation but says there's nothing wrong with that.

Mining billionaire Clive Palmer made the extraordinary claim on Tuesday that Greenpeace and the Australian Greens were being funded by the CIA via the Rockefeller Foundation to hurt Australian mining exports.

Greenpeace campaigner John Hepburn says the organisation received $70,000 from the Rockefeller Family Fund to research the environmental impacts of the Australian coal industry.

"We've accepted a small amount of funding from a philanthropic trust," Mr Hepburn told reporters in Brisbane.

"It's like accepting funding from the Lowy Trust or the Myer Foundation here in Australia.

"...It would be less than what Clive Palmer spends on caviar in a year."

Mr Hepburn called on Liberal National Party (LNP) leader Campbell Newman to rule out giving its largest donor, Mr Palmer, special exemptions for his China First mining project.

That development threatens the Bimblebox nature reserve and the LNP has pledged to protect areas of high conservation value from mines, Mr Hepburn said.

Meanwhile, anti-coal seam gas activist Drew Hutton said he would decide whether to launch a defamation suit against Clive Palmer after speaking with his wife and assessing his funds.

He said his Lock the Gate Alliance was funded by members and donations from members and supporters, and not US interests.

"There's been no foreign funding, there's been no government funding, and as far as I'm aware no corporate funding for Lock the Gate," Mr Hutton said.

The activist said he would drop any plans for legal action if he received a public apology from Mr Palmer.

"If you say something which is unfair to somebody, if you're a decent human being and you realise that you've been unfair then you apologise," he said.

"That's the decent thing to do."

GetUp! to fund legal suit against Clive Palmer

ACTIVIST group GetUp! will fund a legal suit against Clive Palmer after the billionaire linked environmentalist Drew Hutton to an alleged CIA plot to damage the Queensland coal industry.

Mr Hutton told The Australian Online he had been bombarded with offers of financial support and revealed GetUp! had made an offer this afternoon to finance his legal case for defamation.

“I spoke to (GetUp! director) Simon Sheikh and he said they would back me,” Mr Hutton said.

He said he would finalise plans with his wife tonight before issuing a statement of intent to Mr Palmer through his lawyer tomorrow.

Mining magnate Clive Palmer will sue Hyatt Hotels for $60 million, accusing it of siphoning money from his Queensland resort and covering it up.

Mr Palmer on Tuesday announced he had sacked Hyatt Hotels Corporation as the manager of his luxury golf resort at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.

He later accused the company of siphoning $60 million in funds from the resort over the past two decades.

An application against Hyatt will be filed in the Queensland Supreme Court and a complaint will also be made about Hyatt’s activities to authorities in the United States, he said.

People were quick to call mining giant Clive Palmer a ‘crackpot’ and a ‘nutjob’ for his bizarre claim that the Greens are a tool of the CIA being used to undermine mining. And they are wacky claims. But the human mind is an amazing thing and comes up with sophisticated ways to protect itself from the real world. He’s not simply ‘wacky’.

Conspiracy theories are a protective mechanism.

9/11 Truthers – who believe that either there was an enormous cover up or active complicity in the September 11 bombings by the US Government - go to great lengths to convince themselves that we don’t live in a world where terrorists can so quickly kill thousands.

JFK conspiracists similarly believe that greater powers must have been behind the assassination, because it seems impossible to them that a lone gunman could take down a US President.

UFO believers find no shortage of evidence for beliefs that reassure them that we are not alone.

I am proud to announce that I’ve recently had a conspiracy theory developed about me. One of the men’s rights extremist sites has investigated and found that I’m involved with a White Ribbon Ambassador and that I ‘instigated’ The Punch to get Health Minister Tanya Plibersek and Melinda Tankard-Reist ‘on board’ … some sort of grand plan.

People who struggle to deal with criticism can turn to conspiracies to both discredit their opponents and to reassure themselves that only shady operatives with vast networks of contacts and enormous resources could possibly attack them.

As I wrote last year, conspiracy theories can also help people feel they are Fox Mulders, part of a small group of people who know the truth.

In Voodoo Histories: How conspiracy theory has shaped modern history, David Aaronovitch says conspiracy theories are “paradoxically comforting”:

They suggest that there is an explanation, that human agencies are powerful and that there is order rather than chaos. This makes redemption possible… what if paranoia is actually the sticking plaster that we fix to an altogether more painful wound? That of feeling ourselves to be of no importance whatsoever, and our lives (and especially our deaths) of little real significance except to ourselves. The problem of our age is that we now search for meaning via Google and we can confirm anything we want to online. URLs are the new evidence.

Clive Palmer’s conspiracy is amusing, but not harmless. Every time someone with influence squanders reason, a little truth puppy dies.

In How Mumbo Jumbo Conquered the World, Frances Wheen writes:

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters, and the past two decades have produced monsters galore. Some are manifestly sinister, others seem merely comical… cumulatively, however, the proliferation of obscurantist bunkum and the assault on reason are a menace to civilisation…

Clive Palmer’s kooky ideas that Greenpeace and the Greens are tools of the CIA are not just dodgy, they’re dangerous. And clear proof that that the Greys have got to him.

CIA conspiracy undermines Clive Palmer’s credibility

It looks like Wayne Swan was onto something after all when he started his bad-tempered battering of mining billionaires. Maybe they aren’t like the rest of us. But if Mr Swan was right in theory, it took Clive Palmer to prove it by claiming the President of the United States was using spies to recruit Greens to wreck Australian coal mining.


'Hey, aren't you one of those men in black?' 'Why yes, yes I am.'

Mr Palmer, one of the three billionaires the Treasurer has been taking swipes at, has started something that others might find extremely difficult to finish.

If the mining industry was worried the newly-passed Minerals Resources Rental Tax would deter investors, what sort of disincentive would come from an influential magnate claiming undercover agents in the open-cut mines?

And Australian banks might have trouble raising funds overseas when one of their biggest customers is claiming US black ops among the Greens.

And what does Opposition Leader Tony Abbott - Mr Palmer’s ally against the MRRT and the carbon pricing scheme - do after this? Demand Julia Gillard call in the US ambassador for a carpeting?

The mining billionaires quite rightly demand the right to speak on government policy. But Mr Palmer has surrendered his credibility, and as a consequence his authority on policy matters. However, overseas observers - the people who rate and recommend our economy to customers - might not know that.

As Canberra attempted to digest Clive Palmer’s latest insight into the business world and geopolitics, Liberal senators were attacking trade unions.

A succession of senators, debating legislation scrapping the Australian Building and Construction Commission, accused union leaders of being the faceless paymasters of Labor who were damaging the economy of the nation.

Such innocence. Such simplicity. Such a quaint reference to a bygone age.

But that wasn’t a conspiracy theory. Clive Palmer has a real conspiracy theory and his villains make the union bosses look like Young Liberals.

The mining billionaire said in effect the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was drawing from a budget greater than Australia’s GDP to pay environmentalists to ruin coal mining in Queensland.

The aim was to swing the trade advantage towards American coal producers and take jobs and income from Australia. And, by the way, they report to the President.

“You only have to go back to read the Church report in the 1970s and read the reports to US Congress which sets up the Rockefeller Foundation as a conduit of CIA funding,” Mr Palmer told reporters in Brisbane yesterday.

Australia has not heard anything like this from a public figure since the CIA was blamed for the Whitlam dismissal.

We could have done without hearing it again.

Clive Palmer has withdrawn some of his crazier suggestions- and it is amusing to see that so few of the LCP Coalition are willing to back him. He has put them in a very embarassing situation since it is the LCP who have always been 'All the way with LBJ"!

Re the donation to the aboriginal cause- I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact he wants to dig up their lands to put one of his (almost totally automatic) mines there.

I think that he and the other oligarchs are probably not incredibly interested in preserving the environment-- I think they see it simply as an opportunity to exploit for themselves.

It's catching though on, as the LCP makes its way around the country making things easy for their good mates. Here in Victoria 'interest' is being sought to open-cut mine the enormous amount of brown coal that underlies most of Eastern Victoria. It is filthy stuff, full of moisture and has to be made into briquettes before it can be processed. It will not be used here--- too dirty by far-- but will be shipped off to Asia. It is very, very cheap to extract and use-- just horribly dirty! And there's masses of it.

Mr Palmer is also a coal mine operator. That is what he accused the CIA of wanting to stop!! Coal mining in Queensland!

Dont get me started there please.....

These people whom scream and shout like the world is going to end about their sacred land.

Then go ahead and use it to trap native animals, turtles, possums, cockatoo's, snakes, and sell them to local or export. They're the only ones allowed to do it, and they make a freaking killing doing it.

Not to mention how they have huge areas of land that not even they visit at all, because aparently its "too sacred for anyone". Im referring to a particular stretch of land that once every 7 years has a river fill and reach out to join the ocean.

Then theres the ones that sign mining contracts allowing companies to come in and mine for minerals/gas. Can you guess how much more they have to pay because the land is "sacred"?


In ways they're exactly like the companies that are coming in and taking a big dump on the enviroment, no? The greed, the lies and BS is there, no?




Meanwhile we have a company legally dumping right next to the barrier reef, they've called in suposid "World Class Heritage" people to assess the damages. Not a single word has been spoken about it on the news since the origional announcment. You can bet there will be no follow up, no charges issued to the company doing this, nor any cease and decist orders either.



Sorry. I'm finding the black mould growing on the wall outside better than humanity today.
