Default Re: Sun Stuff: What's up!

Folks, I've not been posting much these past few days, because I haven't seen much data to post...the flares have been quite low-mag (B's and C's) according to most sources...YET...the electron flux has been going bonkers, auroras have been spectacular, tahere have been several Geomagnetic Sudden Impulses, Type II and IV Radio Bursts, and the Kp-index has been in storm level for a couple of days (and NO Coronal Holes...so, no way it could be blamed on typical Solar Wind).

I have really not seen enough public data that, IMO, would explain these last listed phenom.....So what's UP?

spaceweather.com has this up since yesterday:

Quote GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Earth is passing through the wake of a CME, and this is causing geomagnetic storms at high latitudes. Last night, auroras were spotted in more than a dozen US states including Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Colorado. Here is what the sky looked like over Grand Portage, Minnesota:

"The auroras were incredible!" says photographer Travis Novitsky.

Europeans witnessed a good show, too: "My girlfriend and I were on the Co. Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, and the auroras we saw were sublime!" reports Martin McKenna. "It's the best I've seen here since 2005, with vertical green pillars of light some 60 degrees high accompanied by amazing pulsating motions like the beating of a heart. We could even see the beams reflecting on the ocean forming their own glitter paths - what a night!"
On the 24th, there was also this info:
Quote The storm is subsiding now. Nevertheless, high-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras as a fast solar wind stream continues to buffet Earth's magnetic field.
They just don't say "which" CME, what was it's sunspot location when it flared noer the mag of the flare, when exactly did it flare, etc.... AND the data has been occulted! I look at this data every day and try to fish around various sites to plug the holes of missing data..... It is getting more and more difficult to find out about these things in near real time..... write that down and ponder on it's significance, please.

And what Solar Wind? That usually flows from coronal holes...and for days there has been none.... I must be missing something...yeah.

I got this info below this morning. Did it get mentioned anywhere on the 23rd, on the 24th??? It's all news for me.... and I am trying to verify it (not that I am a Doubting Thomas, but I want to be sure!) Another sundivng comet and CME:

Quote Sun-diving comet and Earth directed CME
    By
    chillymanjaro
    – April 25, 2012Posted in: Solar activities

A Sun-Diving was caught on the Soho satellite feed April 23rd, shortly after the comet’s death plunge a large Halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed and appears to have earth directed components. Impact on the earths magnetic field is expected sometime April 27th.

Now seriously , folks, could that tiny comet and that very weak halo CME cause much damage to EArth? Surely you have seen much bigger comets collide with the sun and their resulting flares??? And, the report says that the flare will be geoeffective for Earth around the 27th..... the flare was on the 23rd.....it usually doesn't take more than 2, max3 days for a CME to get to Earth's mag field..... What the HECK is going on????? I am more and more convinced that this has little to do with the Sun and more to do with "Strange Energy Comes". But like you all, I'll just try to bite my nails less and wait and see....

    Edit:

I forgot to add this info that I had seen at SolarHam.com (the bold print I have added for emphesis):

    Quote Updated 4/25/2012 @ 00:20 UTC
    Geomagnetic Storm Update
A long lasting Geomagnetic Storm that reached very close to the Strong G3 Level took place Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Visible Aurora was seen in many locations and Ham Radio operators were able to make numerous contacts via the Aurora on the 6 meter (50mhz) amateur radio band. This storm was due to a sharply south pointing component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) that allowed the solar wind to flow in and generate aurora. Things are now starting to return to quieter levels.

UPDATE: Minor Geomagnetic Storm conditions (Kp=5) did again flare up Tuesday evening. The solar wind is currently near 500 km/s. Be on the lookout for Aurora at very high latitudes.

Here's the latest SWPC 3-day Space Weather Forecast (mentions a coronal hole...hmmm):

Quote Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 115 Issued at 2200Z on 24 Apr 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 23/2100Z
to 24/2100Z: Solar activity has been at low levels for the past 24
hours with multiple C-class x-ray events. A C3 flare was observed at
24/0745Z off the east limb from new Region 1467 (N14E72). Associated
with this event, were both a type II radio sweep (estimated shock
velocity of 1029 km/s) and a non-Earth directed CME. Two other new
regions were numbered today, Region 1468 (N09E12) which rapidly
emerged on the disk and Region 1469 (S21E68), which rotated onto the
disk. The remaining active regions were stable and quiet today,
except for Region 1465 (S19W12). Region 1465 showed a consolidation
of both leader and follower spot groups into one cluster and is now
    classified as a beta-gamma-delta.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at
low levels with a slight chance for M-class activity for the next
    three days (25 - 27 April).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 23/2100Z to 24/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to major storm levels during
the past 24 hours due to continued CME effects and the arrival of a
coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS). Early in the period,
measurements from the ACE spacecraft showed extensive southward
(negative) periods of the Bz component of the IMF. Even though solar
wind speeds remained well below nominal levels, these periods drove
the majority of the geomagnetic activity. Around 24/0200Z, CH HSS
characteristics were observed by the ACE spacecraft with solar wind
density dropping off as the solar wind speed increased. At the time
of this report, solar wind speeds had increased from around 350 km/s
    to around 630 km/s.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to active levels on day one (25 April) as
the effects of a CH HSS continue. An increase to active with a
chance for isolated minor storm periods is expected on day two (26
April) as the CME from 23 April is expected to become geoeffective.
Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on day three (27 April) as
    effects of the CME wane.

Thanks morningsong.. your knowledge and experience with this is much appreciated.

So we're having proton fluxes and all these different effects yet low activity. It's likely an outer force, right? So reminds me of what pane andov has spoken about with the outer magnetic field interacting. What does everyone think about this?? Quadripolar sun??? whaaat?

Once again, spaceweather.com is mentioning "high speed solar wind":

Quote GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A mild (Kp=5) geomagnetic storm is underway. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. The source of this activity is a high-speed solar wind stream buffeting Earth's magnetic field. Aurora alerts: text, phone.

This is the third day in a row that geomagnetic storms have circled the poles. On April 23-24, auroras were spotted in more than a dozen US states including Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Colorado. In Anchorage, Alaska, even the midnight sun could not completely overwhelm the Northern Lights:

More auroras may be in the offing. A minor CME is en route to Earth, due to arrive on April 26th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 20% to 30% chance of geomagnetic storms.
The pict of the sun on spaceweather.com, where it states that there are no coronal holes, has date 24 April...please note.

In the more recent pict below, one can see a rather small CH in the northern hemisphere... nothing compared to the "trianglar CH" from last month. Could anyone tell me where this "solar wind" is coming from?

Here's yesterday's SWPC Space weather Forecast:

Quote Joint USAF/NOAA Report of Solar and Geophysical Activity
SDF Number 116 Issued at 2200Z on 25 Apr 2012

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 24/2100Z
to 25/2100Z: Solar activity was at low levels. Region 1459 (S16W65)
    produced a C1 x-ray event at 25/0224Z while Region 1460 (N15W81)
    produced a C3/Sf at 25/1215Z. Region 1465 (S17W26) indicated
consolidation in both its leader and trailer spots. The region
appeared to have lost its gamma and delta magnetic configuration,
but still maintained an east to west oriented inversion line. No
discernible changes were noted in the remaining regions. No
Earth-directed CMEs were observed during the period.

IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to remain
at low levels with a slight chance for M-class activity for the next
    three days (26 - 28 April).

IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 24/2100Z to 25/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field ranged from quiet to minor storm conditions
with an isolated high latitude severe storm period observed during
25/0600Z - 0900Z. This activity was due to coronal hole high speed
stream affects (CH HSS). Over the past 24 hours, solar wind
velocities gradually increased from about 600 km/s to near 800 km/s.
Total field strength (Bt) varied between 5 to 12 nT while the Bz
component of the interplanetary magnetic field remained mostly south
from -4 to -10 nT. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at
geosynchronous orbit reached high levels during the period.

IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to active levels with isolated minor storm
periods on day one (26 April) as the 23 April CME is expected to
become geoeffective. Quiet to unsettled levels with isolated active
periods are expected on day two (27 April) as effects of the CME
wane. By day three (28 April), mostly quiet conditions are expected.

Quote I am curious....has ANYONE studied the sun before all this solar flare maximum get ur panties in a bind stuff came about? Seriously...what has been observed by the suns actions in the last 20-10 years?
We have had many solar storms (even in our own lifetimes). A massive solar storm was recorded in 1859 (that was the last real biggie and this one is predicted to not be as big as that one). Auroras were seen all over Earth, telegraph communications were disrupted. They say that the CME from one massive solar flare took only 18 hours to reach Earth!
Solar flares happen often but do not always affect Earth.
Cycles of increased and decreased solar activity have always been there (the sunspot cycle averages about 11 years). What is different about this active phase of Sun is that we have more advanced technology so we get to see pictures and real-time videos of solar flares.
This cycle seems to be as strong as the one that peaked in about 1960 (and maybe a bit weaker), and the peak for this one is predicted to be in 2013. After that, the prediction is that the peaks will be weaker (which is good news for space travel).
If you are worried, don't be. This sun activity is normal.
What scientists can't seem to tell us is how what is happening outside our solar system may be affecting this solar cycle, and I think it is this that may be causing all the interest about this particular solar cycle. Remember that a true scientists knows that there is a lot we don't know!
There's a special galactic alignment at this time and since it hasn't happened for many many thousands of years, scientists can only theorise - they don't know if and how it can affect us.
And you know what, if something catastrophic is going to happen, it is probably going to happen so quickly that there is no point in worrying anyway - we could have one year left on Earth or one million years. Whatever it is, we still are living on the most beautiful planet not only in this solar system and this galaxy, but in the entire universe! (If there is going to be a catastrophe and we knew so before we incarnated then I bet we were all lining up saying 'pick me' because, well, Earth is so beautiful!)
PS Odds are that there will not be a catastrophe but we are going to learn a lot more about our solar system, our galaxy and our universe in the next year or two!
