Default The Latest Pictures From Curiosity Rover -- Mars is NOT Red!

NASA recently uploaded a collection of color photographs (after they have received criticism for the first black and white pictures released to the public), allegedly sent by the Mars Rover Curiosity, where we can clearly see that the Martian soil is very alike ours, and not red at all -- just as many amateur astronomers pointed out in the past years.

Here is an interesting 2008 video, showing an Earth-like, blue, atmosphere -- evidence of oxygen being present on Mars:

What do you think of the pictures showing a storm-like fog at the horizon?
    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vhUWTaNd4L...sity+Rover.jpg

Could the "mist" be artificially added with a picture editing program, in order to hide a possible blue sky?

Here are some un-photoshopped pictures of Mars from the previous missions (take a look at the sky before and after the pictures are returned to their original color!):

The photoshopped pictures show the same mist over the horizon, but once they have been un-photoshopped the sky turned blue, clear and beautiful -- just like ours!

From Curiosity Sends High-Resolution Color Images from Gale Crater (NASA Press Release):
In one version of the large mosaic, the colors portrayed are unmodified from those returned by the camera. The view is what a cell phone or camcorder would record, since the Mastcam takes color pictures in the exact same manner that consumer cameras acquire color images. The second version shows the colors modified as if the scene were transported to Earth and illuminated by terrestrial sunlight. This processing, called "white balancing," is useful for scientists to be able to recognize and distinguish rocks by their color in more familiar lighting.
So ... are the images you mention the "white balanced" images, or otherwise "improved" ?

(Not that I trust NASA ... but proving that them untrustworthy probably requires some effort.)

    From NASA's website:

Quote Although Curiosity is about 11 miles (18 kilometers) away from this area and the view is obscured somewhat by dust and haze, the image provides new insights into the style of sediment transport within this system.
    Wouldn't this indicate atmosphere?

In order to have wind/dust storms there has to be an atmosphere to provide the convection loops required to create wind...

Not red, if those pictures are even from Mars that is.

Quote Newly received images from NASA's Curiosity rover are filling out the high-resolution view of its surroundings at Gale Crater on Mars — and providing an up-close look at the six-wheeled craft's nuclear power source. But there are even more impressive vistas yet to come.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of the new imagery was actually taken by Curiosity's Mastcam color camera more than a week ago, on Aug. 8-9, also known as Sol 3 of Curiosity's mission. It didn't take long for the rover to transmit 130 low-resolution thumbnails, each measuring 144 by 144 pixels. Those were assembled and released as a 360-degree panorama on Aug. 9. But the high-resolution versions, at 1,200 pixels square, have taken a lot longer to send back. Today's additions to the jigsaw puzzle include pictures of the layered rock on the flank of a 3-mile-high (5 kilometer-high) mountain known Aeolis Mons or Mount Sharp.

The image wizards who frequent the forums at www.UnmannedSpaceflight.com pounced on the fresh pictures and incorporated them into their own panoramic views. One long strip was done up by California graphic designer Ed Truthan in two flavors: the red-tinged view that Curiosity saw on Mars, and the white-balanced view that earthlings would see if the scene were transported to our planet.

Another strip, which includes some of the rover hardware, was offered by British researcher James Canvin. Two pieces of the puzzle are still missing from the central area of the image, and a horizontal line in the image was left behind as an artifact of the image-stitching process.

"I'll fix this and add some final touches when the final two images are available," Canvin promises.

If you click on the preview image below, you'll find some impressive high-resolution views on Canvin's Martian Vistas website

    [Mod-edit:
the www.edthruthan.com/mars website is getting hammered ... it may take an hour or two for the images at the last two links above to load ... so I de-activated those last two links. -Paul.]

[Mod-edit #2: I made copies of the last two images in this post on my server, for speedier access. But the images are still so large they would load slowly for anyone without a very fast Internet connection, so I left the images as active links to my server, rather than displaying them inline. The original red-tinged view is some 29,420 pixels wide, and the white-balanced view is 14,480 pixels wide (really big!). Both images are only 1283 pixels high, so the images will appear as a single, thin, horizontal line of color if viewed in a small window. -Paul.]

I totally am letting myself believe this is mars and I am excited every time I hear of new pictures coming out.
This stuff is so interesting to me, I totally look at these images and just want to tell the rover controllers to "go Left, no no go right, whats that over there! oh oh look at that rock!" almost like I am a back seat video gamer!

There looking for something...that's why all the effort is being put in to visit this barren sand heap. Many in the program probably don't know the true reason for these visits to Mars, or not the most important reason that is.

Gravity on mars is calculated to be 35% of earth's, that 10 lbs or 10 kilos would weight only 3.8lbs or 3.8kg.

This means that particles that would not suspend in earth's atmosphere will suspend in mars' atmosphere? Probably. However... that the atmosphere is around, what is it.... 1.15% of the density of earth's atmosphere, where the lander is situated?

if there is a hint of blue sky, it has vast oceans , and weather like ours and air and trees. some forgot the dvd released showing trees, I think it was brian leary giving the presentation, showing tunnels , water, and huge trees. Our ancestors had a huge war there, thus it does look a bit like a war zone we see mostly sand and plenty of rock and a lingering haze.

Well I did visit mars once..

They have many bases there, and many humans being trained for various purposes. I was able to breathe. There was vegetation. The sky was dark as it was night-time while I was outside. The sky is clearer there than it is here, even in the city.

I know that the information in those photos are very low, but I attempted color correcting one of them to see if their photos are, in fact, manipulated.

I think Mars IS red, but I don't think the sky is, either.

The main question is why are they always releasing controversial photographs to the public? It's impossible to miss that jet-like UFO in the sky!

And I don't understand why NASA keeps posting these black and white pictures in 2012. It's beyond absurd!

I think the most interesting thing about these pictures is how very earthlike they are. I am sure that there are plenty of places on our planet that would like pretty much identical.

When artists tried to depict the surface of mars in the late 19th and early 20th centuries they conjured up 'alien' worlds which look wholly uninhabitable.

Hi everybody. That last pix is great but I'm not sure that NASA is disclosing. For me it's like a 1000 head dragon. They got so much things to hide since the beginning...

This last pix, on the official .gov website (!) looks like the action of a "tired guy". Didn't they see something "unusual here" ? And as usual, white and black picture.
