@carmody: all I know is that dance is what my friends used to do (& called the "donkey") in triumph or silliness or like you say "good fun" a dozen years ago in our oblivious joyful bliss-filled college days, to see it popularized in such a way by another culture just puts a hop in my step...good times!

Thanks Paul. I am sure there are some very interesting things to be said about computer language. I recall during the Climategate scandal, there were some amazing REM lines (comments) among the code used at the University of East Anglia basically saying 'this is cheating' and so forth!

The common element you mention does exist somewhere underneath. Before he was a political activist, Noam Chomsky was a highly influential linguist (professor of linguistics), the founder of transfomational grammar. Transformational grammar describes a deep structure (e.g. GI- kills- Jap) which can have several surface structures (e.g. an active structure, 'the GI kills the Jap', or a passive structure, 'the Jap is killedby the GI'). Stated very simply, you have grammar on the one hand, dealing with sentence structure, and semantics on the other, the underlying meaning. Of course, the choice between the active and passive voice is a choice of subject, a choice between the GI and the Japanese viewpoint. This is the situation within a single language. During WW2, the same thing in Japanese (however they formulate their surface structure) would have a very different meaning or deep structure.

So the commonality we are looking for will be achieved when we can share the same deep structure, which will only come by getting beyond our differences whereby, in this instance, American and Japanese are not just synonyms for human being.
    So it's back to math?
    Abstract concepts?

Or maybe 20 years from now it will be about slogans or headlines....
also the phone texting thing is taking on a life of it's own.

Thanks Carmody. I met a few Eastern Europeans that were wearing me off too. My ex being one of them. Intellectually very stimulating though (although in his case, he had low EQ in my views, so there it was draining litterally).
My lot is Gemini too ..... should I worry?????? lol
As for dancing, I know quite well where I actually stand, in terms of intelligence, in terms of emotional intelligence and in terms of spiritual development (I think). I would be afraid to put you back into induced stupor... lol.
However, you must know that you are waking me up from my own stupor most of the time. I just have a heavy tendency to fall back into it. The kick has to be strong while the softeness present. The balance is difficult to reach for me.
Anyhow, thank you Carmody for the stretch toward shaking my stupor.
Have now to go to work to adress the biochemical needs and beliefs that put me back into stupor. Your two years (previous post) away are surely quite justified. I just do not know how to take care of my responsibilities (raising my kid vs letting go for evolution) and let go at the same time.
Well said, Flash. Joining in to form a chorus here.

Lets see how many women (and men) we can find to make a Carmody fan club.
Remembering how shy this guy is we have to tread carefully.
But he may also be intrigued by the attention and see it as a fresh challenge to prevent ego from resurfacing in the form of vanity.

Something I had to confront these last few days, along with the battles against my inner resentment.

Either way, to me is just wacky fun nostalgia...speaking of which, reminds me of old SNL: Dieter gives it a 14 out of 14 cuz it's got a good beat and is easy to dance to:

...this is the part of Sprockets where we dance

    Oops...
ok, here is the ideal, as I see it.

No matter what the language, or the culture, or the tone,
to interpret another's communication we should look to the commonalities we all share.
This is what I understood you to say so far.

What then are those commonalities? Fear of death? Love for life?
Or a mixture of a death wish in constant struggle with the survival instinct?
Here comes another "oops"...death wish might be a wrong choice of words...

    How about desire for transcendence?

To be allowed in the Village means one must be trusted that they know how to respect the Village. I respect this village. I hope it will one day be said I backed up these words.

In addition, what I like about this Village, is that I can venture into the woods. I can also venture beyond the woods and into the cities where there are less "rules."

Both villages and cities have their place and so does the woods. The trick is to respect each for what they are.

They are all wonderful places to me.

    Love to ALL, justoneman

Like the court jester, he's riding the ragged edge of being killed. Like the Jester, he's mimicking, and getting a laugh...at the same time he's screaming in the undercurrent 'what is your major malfunction?'

But to be clear, the moment someone engages in anything that can even remotely be felt as fandom, I'm gone. I get real queasy and uncomfortable when anything like that happens. For all the right reasons. (recall, two lives back, men trusted me with their lives. I was a hero, a thing they could trust to keep them alive... in their world of horror. They died anyway.)

What I used to do, is I would go to hellish extremes, with my friends and then look them in the eye, in full knowing, right in the middle of the given extreme.....and ask, 'now, what exactly is going on, here?'*

As if our given insanity, was paused via remote control...and then the image fades into being from a television..and the narrator/psychologist, taps the monitor with the remote..and begins the discussion. they would freak for a second... and then they would go back to being their given 'normal' freaked out.

Which is why I say I have my best conversations with the bereaved, or similar, or with the dying, as they understand the pure crystalline clarity of the moment, and the flow, and the life. They are on the edge of or are in clarity.

*every now and then, a film would show this moment. Why this does not happen anymore, is beyond me. Susan George did this at the end, in the last minute of the 1974 film 'Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry'. She just sobered up and said, 'I think I can unload now'.

One word will suffice, for now: humanity.

When I understand my humanity, I understand your humanity, and everyone else's. And vice versa.

I then understand that humanity means understanding humanity - in an infinite regress. But long before you get anywhere close to infinity, you have identified enough specimens of humanity that you took for monkeys that the hundredth monkey effect kicks in

That is what I meant by arranging the tiles of the mosaic. The image may well be transcendence, but that is the result of the process. We are in the process of becoming. Levinas says, 'the perfection of man is his perfectibility'

he had no idea there was a forum like Avalon, he has written many books, looks like he will be joining us, if the Mods have any openings...

Rocky again, where I used to help find missing children, he specialized in healing them...

he has written many books on how the brain works, the flows and ebs of energy. being connected, he is a big part of my knowledge database...

I've been showing him the effects of the solar blasts and moon energy, he believes man first started from large solar flares, each major blast evolving us further...

He almost died from dehydration this summer, so he's been here hugging my air conditioner for a few weeks while he heals...

Avalon healers have been quietly helping...

we talk without words, so nothing shocks him..

    Understood...and I was only teasing.
But we are investigating the deeper issues this month, so lets do it as a form of a dance...
two steps forward, one step back, an' all that....

    Anyway, fandom, fandom, ...
googled the word to be sure of it's meaning.

    Here it is:

Quote Fandom (consisting of fan [fanatic] plus the suffix -dom [domain], as in kingdom, freedom, etc.) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices (a fandom); this is what differentiates "fannish" (fandom-affiliated) fans from those with only a casual interest.
A fandom can grow up centered around any area of human interest or activity. The subject of fan interest can be narrowly defined, focused on something like an individual celebrity, or more widely defined, encompassing entire hobbies, genres or fashions. While it is now used to apply to groups of people fascinated with any subject, the term has its roots in those with an enthusiastic appreciation for sports. Merriam-Webster's dictionary traces the usage of the term back as far as 1903.[1]
Fandom as a term can also be used in a broad sense to refer to an interconnected social networking service for individual fandoms, many of which overlap.

I have been in both situations and neither one is heaven.

The toughest part about having fans is that there is a powerful energetic pull to perform at all times,
and to live up to numerous expectations.
    Very awkward situation.

The tough part about being a fan, on the other hand, is that one is trapped in an illusion,
and can never proceed into one's own search, nor discover that inner genius...

Busted again! ...for my attempted use of reverse psychology... but also beware - inside me lurks the "All That Is" as well - not just "an" environment.

That's why I hang in the cities more... easier to get away with being myself. But when the city gets fed up, thank god for the woods, a werewolf's refuge where the werewolf knows others are safe from his bite.

So how about this for language use:
    I love you, araucaria...slobber, slobber

I have a friend visiting, top rated doctor in California in Psychology, his name is Doctor Higgins and he is blown away by what is going on here in the village, I'm handing the keyboard over to him...

he had no idea there was a forum like Avalon, he has written many books, looks like he will be joining us, if the Mods have any openings...

Hello, This Dr. William Higgins, I type 1 word a minute so please be patient. I'm here.

Hello Dr. William Higgins. Very pleased to meet you.
I have an obsession with statistics, so if you will allow me....

    One word a minute....
    Many books.....

hmmm... you are giving away your age here.
Or you are a fast talker with a brilliant secretary?

Which is why I say I have my best conversations with the bereaved, or similar, or with the dying, as they understand the pure crystalline clarity of the moment, and the flow, and the life. They are on the edge of or are in clarity.
I don't know why but reading this brings tears to my eyes. Not at you Carmody, just ... the way it is.

    Must clarity be so transitory?

Interesting, how life is a series of reflections, as I opened for business yesterday (monday), the owner of my shop arrived just ahead of a giant truckload of fabric and proceeded to convert my picture frame shop into a fabric store.
Won't this be good for your business then?
Should do wonders for passing traffic.
