On a site dedicated to little green men, the near-derision expressed in a few of the responses to this is ironic. I've seen far more risible claims and speculation that seem to be par for the course here, and yet the initial response is always: "Really? Could it be true? I don't think so, but I want it to be true, so now I'm going to follow the yellow brick road to the pretty website and listen to the well-constructed oratory. If nothing else, more entertainment." Submarine darts on the White House lawn? OK!

I wonder what makes this so different. If you asserted on a mainstream forum that the moon is hollow and home to malevolent beings, you would probably garner a similar series of knee-jerk reactions, more for the sole purpose of ego boosts and an extra layer of security on one's chosen belief system than any interest in 'truth'. Here it would be second nature in the flow of conversation with pats on the back.

Furthermore, if you gave them links to Avalon threads propounding hollow moon theory and alien abductions, while taking the existence of timelines and earth quarantines for granted, you would undoubtedly be met with accusations of mass delusion and jokes about the profusion of free time afforded to those silly new-agers.

The worth of an idea is relative to the context of the community in which it is presented. I'm not even interested in the validity of facts supporting or disproving something like this; the group dynamic is everything. Because what I see in the world is a bunch of factions all desperately trying to maintain their precarious collective identities. Remember that there are mutually reinforcing cycles going on here.

No, I don't believe that the world is flat. But if I did, what would you do with me?

The subject of the OP reminds me of a book I read Way back in my teens. "Sailing Alone Around The World" by Joshua Slocum (1900). In this book, this former sea captain, as a personal adventure, sought to do exactly as stated in the title, a feat which had not been accomplished at the time of the writing (at least anything that had been written down in 'recent' history). He found, rebuilt and outfitted a 45 foot sloop (which he refitted as a yawl during the course of the voyage, if I remember correctly), and proceeded to circumnavigate the GLOBE.

One item that is pertinent to this thread is that, when he made landfall in South Africa, being that news of his adventure had been sent via telegraph to all the 'modern' nations, he was greeted with great enthusiasm by both established locals, and representatives of the government. Here is an excerpt:

"It sounds odd to hear scholars and statesmen say the world is flat; but it is a fact that three Boers favored by the opinion of President Krüger prepared a work to support that contention. While I was at Durban they came from Pretoria to obtain data from me, and they seemed annoyed when I told them that they could not prove it by my experience. With the advice to call up some ghost of the dark ages for research, I went ashore, and left these three wise men poring over the Spray's track on a chart of the world, which, however, proved nothing to them, for it was on Mercator's projection, and behold, it was "flat." The next morning I met one of the party in a clergyman's garb, carrying a large Bible, not different from the one I had read. He tackled me, saying, "If you respect the Word of God, you must admit that the world is flat." "If the Word of God stands on a flat world—" I began. "What!" cried he, losing himself in a passion, and making as if he would run me through with an assagai. "What!" he shouted in astonishment and rage, while I jumped aside to dodge the imaginary weapon. So, we can see, ignorance is never in want of a believer in it's delusion.

Mankind are just bacteria, and that's why we can't figure it out. Every so many thousands of years, God brushes his teeth.

I haven't got the calendar entirely worked out and I'm not sure if there's an old one around somewhere.

And the more I'm reminded that all the ideas that produce fear produce that and nothing more and hold it unchanged, the better.
And the more irony and fantasy that's there in the way things seemingly are, the better.
The evolution of the minds of men towards truth and being fit to exist in a beneficent universe is the issue.
Truth and reality includes laughter and whimsy. It doesn't include fear and frustration.

I think that anyone who takes that seriously is so disconnected with reality that they maybe shouldn't be on this Forum.

I think it means they may not possess the necessary discernment to add meaningful discussion to more complex issues where the truth is in question.
