    Default Hemp / Cannabis

(PhysOrg.com) -- Industrial hemp, which grows in infertile soils, is attractive as a potential source of sustainable diesel fuel.

Of all the various uses for Cannabis plants, add another, “green” one to the mix.

Researchers at UConn have found that the fiber crop Cannabis sativa, known as industrial hemp, has properties that make it viable and even attractive as a raw material, or feedstock, for producing biodiesel – sustainable diesel fuel made from renewable plant sources.

The plant’s ability to grow in infertile soils also reduces the need to grow it on primary croplands, which can then be reserved for growing food, says Richard Parnas, a professor of chemical, materials, and biomolecular engineering who led the study.

“For sustainable fuels, often it comes down to a question of food versus fuel,” says Parnas, noting that major current biodiesel plants include food crops such as soybeans, olives, peanuts, and rapeseed. “It’s equally important to make fuel from plants that are not food, but also won’t need the high-quality land.”
Industrial hemp is grown across the world, in many parts of Europe and Asia. Fiber from the plant’s stalk is strong, and until the development of synthetic fibers in the 1950s, it was a premier product used worldwide in making rope and clothing.

Today, there are still parts of the world that rely on Cannabis stalks as a primary fiber, mainly because of its ability to grow “like a weed,” without requiring lots of water, fertilizers, or high-grade inputs to flourish. But the seeds, which house the plant’s natural oils, are often discarded. Parnas points out that this apparent waste product could be put to good use by turning it into fuel.

How refreshing. But then, Big-Agra/Oil/most_everything has waged an 80 year campaign against hemp.

Bio-fuel from Corn, etc is a non-starter anyway. Just not efficient enough, and requires land too valuable for the purpose. If the US turned the entire great plains into corn for bio-fuel, the country would still have to import oil.
It would also starve to death.

Hemp is the salvation its like the does it all miracle plant that can produce so many different subproducts, what it does is amazing it could help save regenerate this planet at extremely fast speeds, but most govt's around the world dont give a crap about it and marginalize the plant as a drug, its a freaking joke sadly.

Yep. I'm sure there are many, many ways to drive a combustion engine, but it's only reinventing the wheel as far as I'm concerned, as combustion is, and has been outdated technology for some time now. We don't need a change of fuel source, we need a change of civilization.

I've wanted to write a book about this topic for a long time. Start from the very beginning of the plants history, take it to present day. Propaganda machine, Anslinger and his timber industry connections, so on so forth.

Trees take 20 years to grow.....hemp grows in 6 months. Year round in some locations........hmmmmmm lol
Today a man on acid realized that all of matter is merely energy condensed into a slow moving vibration, that we are all one, and there is no such thing as death. Life is but a dream.

Hemp is a good source for biodiesel, but algae will be the long-term solution. Algae is practically solar powered and can self-replicate in remote desert areas with nothing but water in a closed loop system. There are however some problems, such as the current regulations and how friggin expensive it is to become compliant for small-scale production. And, when I say compliant, I mean nothing less than an operation the size of BP. Big oil does not want this to happen and there is now a ton of regulations on biodiesel on top of what is necessary for diesel. For example, in California, it is no longer legal to store biodiesel in underground tanks. This means that no gas stations will sell it and the only places are co-ops that are not running for a profit and a few people who operate illegally out of their garage. In addition, all of the used feed source is fed to the livestock instead of going to biodiesel production. Imagine the irony ... the President and administration go to war because to control oil in the Middle East when we are literally giving our domestic food source to the farm animals. In addition, the real cost of fuel in the US is the same as it is in Europe -- around $8/gallon, the only difference is that it is heavily subsidized by Uncle Same (or in other words, we're already paying for it, most of us just don't know it).

Even the lowly peanut could provide a huge source of fuels and other products. Can't find the links just now.

    Default Hemp War Conspiracy

Quote This is the film that the United States government does not want you to see. This is the film that contains the facts about one movement... one man... and one miraculous plant that could revolutionize the world. The best-selling book The Emperor Wears No Clothes blew the lid off the anti-hemp conspiracy and explained all there is to know about an easy-to-grow plant with infinite, non-intoxicating uses.
Why is hemp illegal? The information is in this film, and you won't believe.

This video is about a man's fight for truth, justice and a plant. What began as a singular battle has turned into a massive movement to educate America about this environmentally beneficial plant. "Emperor of Hemp" exposes government and big-business efforts to keep the plant illegal, and takes you to the front lines of the pro-hemp movement.

Meet the "Emperor of Hemp," Jack Herer, the man behind "The Emperor Wears No Clothes." Find out how his passionate journey began. Discover how he overcame hurdle after hurdle. Cheer his ultimate vindication. Narrated by Peter Coyote, "Emperor of Hemp" could change the world ... if the American public finally realizes "The Emperor Wears No Clothes."

No offence, but it's a crap film, and justification for anyone that wants a joint. Whoo hoo.

Can I ask......... In a new world, a new beginning, would you honestly recommend to your kids, the beautiful-child-miracle you hold in your arms when they're first born, to play with these toys? To smoke, to drink, to meet the person you get it from and be introduced to other bits of kit that are a natural follow-on to try when you're off your head? So if not as a baby, when exactly would the 'time' be OK?

Wouldn't you prefer to use your past mistakes to make you more determined to live life how we know, deep down, is intended? Would you really take your children by the hand and lead them to these things? Damn, I sound like a Bible thumper, but it scares me to death that this crap can still be perpetuated.

I only know that if I want to connect with my 'self', if I want fresh, sparkling eyes to look towards my future, and mine and my kids progress, there are no answers to be found in these things. There's only regret.

Haven't we learnt a damn thing? I am a hypocrite, by the way. Please don't let your children think all of this crap is 'alright', it's complete ****e.

    Peace,

Weed... is like driving a car to the door that has the answer.

The weed can get you close to the door, but you have to travel through the door on your own ---with no weed.

People get lazy and imagine the weed will take them through the door they sense is there.

    It will not.

They get lost in the moment of 'now' that the confusion of a good strong weed can bring them. To forget the worries of the day, whatever the case may be.

The difficult thing to to understand that there is much more, beyond the weed. Much much more.

What lies beyond has no cost ---but your dedication. I'm one to talk myself, but I'm aware that weed can only take you part of the way. The rest....one must walk to and obtain on their own. It is simply not to be found in the weed.

There is no easy to press button of a freedom trip hiding in the weed. The universe is not organized that way. It is a great signpost, but don't get lost in it.

I've smoked my fair share in my life, but have to agree with Carmody on this. I have even had the most incredible meditation experiences while under the influence of THC. It is not really physically harmful at all (except as any inhaled substance - far safer than tobacco ... despite the propaganda), but regular use was obviously never intended by nature, as it is quite detrimental to ones spiritual advancement, even though a few experiences may initially indicate otherwise. In my opinion pot is an excellent experience, I can even recommend if you have the inclination and availability (and free time) give it a try, but avoid regular use. I have to say the same with alcohol, I have a hard time with this one myself because I really like my beer (I'm Canadian after all), but regular use sets me back spiritually, and psychic ability wise.

In the spirit od Carmody's post ... weed .. it is like much religion (MHO), gets you to the door, but that's it.

ok sorry, getting Ron Paul's comment much better .. and I totally agree ... it's not even about the money .. it's about why the hell is one of the most useful plants illegal to manufacture and sell from ... -paper, cloth, so much uses - totally sustainable ... huge risk to chemical and plastics co's though (TPTB income obviously) ...pure shame... and I won't even get into the medicine aspect (although this is the THC aspect and I suppose is different) ... and my father has cancer .... pot is a symptom reliever, if not a cure ... if only I can convince him to look at the research ...
