EVIL TWINS? A pair of large sunspots has rotated into view over the sun's eastern limb. The two dark cores, collectively known as AR1654, are each big enough to swallow Earth four times over. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture of the twins during the early hours of Jan. 10th: The two sunspots are connected by a canopy of strong magnetic fields, which are presently crackling with low-level C-flares. Much stronger eruptions are possible. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of M-class flares and a 5% chance of X-flares during the next 24 hours. http://www.spaceweather.com/

Pentagon develops UFO-like airship



Designed by Aeroscraft in conjunction with the Pentagon, the ’Pelican’ looks more like Thunderbird 2 than a traditional airship. Designed to carry up to 10 tons of cargo across large distances the ship uses a fraction of the fuel of a standard aircraft. The Pentagon is also hoping that in the future such ships will be useful for surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

If the prototype proves a success, there are plans to scale things up with an even larger 450ft model capable of hauling 66 tons of cargo. It is also possible that the ships could serve as luxury private yachts for the rich or as a vehicle for sightseeing and long-distance cruises for tourists...

Reading your two posts together, it reminded me of the balancing so many of us are often doing, walking between the worlds of the pragmatic and the inspirational. My thanks to you both.

I was reminded, in a broader context, of an excellent interview given by Clarissa Pinkola Estes on George Noory’s Coast to Coast AM show, on 1.11.11.

Clarissa Pinkola Estés is an American poet, post-trauma specialist and Jungian psychoanalyst.

I’ve quoted some extracts from the first hour of her segment. I’m quoting it because I find hers to be a loving, soft-spoken, voice of reason. A woman rich in spirit and intellect.

GN: It makes you, I think, totally free if you understand it, if you’re in that mode, and I think that’s probably another reason why governments don’t want you to be able to do this.

CPE: Exactly right. You know I’ve just reviewed the material on Roswell… […] …what happened to the people who said ‘I saw something,’ was disgraceful. It was shameful. Instead of saying ‘Well let’s see. Well tell me the story. Well what do you think? Well, maybe we can’t understand this but let’s see what we can know about this,’ it was like ‘Let’s put them in jail, let’s cross-examine them, let’s interrogate them…’

We will ridicule you, we will humiliate you, if necessary we’ll call you mentally ill and we will put you away if we need to, we will disappear you, you’ll be one of the desaparecidos, because you are too threatening if you really are going to develop in all the consciousness that you were gifted with the day you were born.

CPE: I would agree with you. Again, it’s what I would call walking in two worlds. That’s the walk in the world of the mortgage payment, and that’s important. I’m a pragmatic mystic. I do not at all agree with the idea that it should be ungrounded.

GN: Right.

CPE: It needs to be useful.

GN: If your head’s in the clouds, you could be headed for trouble.

CPE: That’s right. Well you could literally lose your head. You need to have your roots and your wings, both.

Astronomers Discover a Planet Almost Identical to Earth

Just over a week after astronomers boldly announced that they would discover an Earth twin elsewhere in the universe within the year, NASA’s Kepler telescop spotted a pretty good candidate. Unglamorously named KOI 172.02 -- KOI stands for Kepler Object of Interest -- this planet is the most Earth-like planet astronomers have discovered yet.

The differences are slight. It’s roughly 50 percent larger than Earth and orbits a star that closely resembles our own sun at a distance that would make the surface of the planet habitable. (The size makes it a "super Earth" rather than an "Earth twin.") With an 242-day long year, it’s slightly closer to its star than the Earth is to the Sun but otherwise enjoys all of the same ideal conditions as we do, as far as astronomers can tell. "This was very exciting because it’s our fist habitable-zone super Earth around a sun-type star," said Natalia Batalha, a Kepler co-investigator at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California. "It’s orbiting a star that’s very much like our sun. Previously the ones we saw were orbiting other types of stars."



In a way, the discovery is a bit underwhelming thanks the recent flurry of exciting exoplanet news. We learned back in October that the closest star system to our own was home to several planets, including an Earth-sized planet. Then at the start of the new year, the team analyzing data from NASA's Kepler planer-finding space telescope announced the discovery of 461 new unconfirmed planets as well as the fact that that the Milky Way galaxy alone was home to more than 17 billion Earth-sized planets. They said they'd find an Earth twin among them by the end of the year. Compared to the days when we didn't know there were any other planets in the universe at all, and suddenly the chances that alien life exists start to look pretty strong. At least that's what the experts say. "It's a big deal -- It's definitely a good candidate for life," said astrophysicist Mario Livio about KOI 172.02. "Maybe there's no land life, but perhaps very clever dolphins."

Big Active Region 11654 has produced a moderate but impulsive M1.2 Class Solar Flare at 09:11 UT today. A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is expected in the coming hours as ejecta has been observed exiting the blast area with possible earth bound components. Solar activity has been very quiet but this active region is the most active on the disk and looks likely to produce more M-Class flares in the coming days.

The Little-Known Legend of Jesus in Japan



A mountain hamlet in northern Japan claims Jesus Christ was buried there

On the flat top of a steep hill in a distant corner of northern Japan lies the tomb of an itinerant shepherd who, two millennia ago, settled down there to grow garlic. He fell in love with a farmer’s daughter named Miyuko, fathered three kids and died at the ripe old age of 106. In the mountain hamlet of Shingo, he’s remembered by the name Daitenku Taro Jurai. The rest of the world knows him as Jesus Christ.

It turns out that Jesus of Nazareth—the Messiah, worker of miracles and spiritual figurehead for one of the world’s foremost religions—did not die on the cross at Calvary, as widely reported. According to amusing local folklore, that was his kid brother, Isukiri, whose severed ear was interred in an adjacent burial mound in Japan.

Galaxy crash sparks large spiral ~


Astronomers have spotted the largest known spiral galaxy - by accident.

A team was looking through data from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (Galex) satellite for star-forming regions around a galaxy called NGC 6872.

But they were shocked to see a vast swathe of ultraviolet light from young stars, indicating that the galaxy is actually big enough to accommodate five of our Milky Way galaxies within it...
