3D printed moon building designs revealed

Architects Fosters and Partners have revealed designs for a building on the Moon that
could be constructed from material already on its surface. An inflatable structure would
be transported from Earth, then covered with a shell built by 3D printers. The printers,
operated by robots, would use soil from the Moon, known as regolith, to build the
layered cover. The proposed site for the building is the southern pole of the Moon.
It is designed to house four people and could be extended, the firm said.

In 2010 a team of researchers from Washington State University found that artificial
regolith containing silicon, aluminium, calcium, iron and magnesium oxide could be used
by 3D printers to create solid objects. The latest plans are the result of a collaboration
between a number of organisations including the European Space Agency. The
consortium tested the practicalities of using a printer on the Moon by setting up a D-
shape 3D printer, which are used to print very large house-sized structures, in a
vacuum chamber with simulated lunar material.

    'Fascinating and unique'

"As a practice, we are used to designing for extreme climates on Earth and exploiting
the environmental benefits of using local, sustainable materials," said Xavier De
Kestelier, a partner in the firm's specialist modelling group."It has been a fascinating
and unique design process, which has been driven by the possibilities inherent in the
material."Buildings on this planet by the architect firm include Wembley Stadium, the
World Trade Center in New York and Beijing airport.Last week US company Deep Space
Industries (DSI) announced plans to use asteroid material for manufacture by
harvesting them and using 3D printers sent into space. The company is also developing
a bespoke 3D printer called MicroGravity Foundry for the purpose, it said, and hopes to
be ready to start production by 2020.

This is so cool to read!!!

Last year I started really writing about lunar mining on my blog.

You guys, it's all going to happen so much faster than we thought it was.

there is going to be a huge space boom, mark my words! within our lifetimes!

and not to mention if Seattle/Portland were ever leveled by a quake or two,
well, this technology would be the best way to replace that infrastructure.

    don't you agree?

Printable Skyscrapers, the real emerald city!!!!!!

It would be so beautiful if they could manage a glass of some kind.
Ideas and discoveries magazine talked about Hex glass in February 2012.
Modeled after a sea sponge skeleton, hex glass is one of the strongest and most flexible building materials in modern existence.

I believe palladium glass could be used to construct such buildings. We can hope and pray that someday we get to choose whether we live in a crystal palace or a box.

Dreams are as real as any blueprint, just act on them and see the result!

Only problem I have with this is, for years it has been mentioned in ufo abduction cases that there is a breathable atmosphere on the moon so a space suit would not be needed if that was indeed the case.
Love. peace and Blessings to you all.

Rest assured if they reveal future moon bases and plans to build such things, the ptb already have them up there, and what we are seeing is outdated and they have much more advanced structures ...the idea of homes on the moon is awesome anyhoo ...

I don't mean to be the joy-buster but all I see are future wars. If we can't even share this planet with others, how are we (the US.....who deliberately stuck the first flag up there declaring quasi-ownership AND as arrogant as it sounds, declared a no-fly zone around the area to boot.....!!) going to share a celestial body? If we can't get along with China, Japan and Russia for example here, what will make the Moon any different?

Plus, I agree with two above posters. Actually three. I believe there is a breathable atmosphere up there. Two, according to many RV, it is inhabited and we're not welcomed and lastly, if this is the 'progress' they're showing us---you best believe they are way ahead of the bell-curve they're portraying!
