Default A new holocaust - every single day

Every single day, across the world, some 400 million animals are slaughtered for food. In addition to this, many millions of animals- including primates- are killed in horrible ways in vivisection laboratories, and many millions more are killed to make shoes, clothing and fashion accessories. (Figures from http://www.adaptt.org/killcounter.html )

This is not a post about the superiority of vegetarianism. I am not pretending to be any better than anybody else. A previous post of mine “If slaughter houses had glass walls….’’ sparked a fierce debate about this topic. But now we have all seen the videos, so we all know what the conditions of life and death are for our animal brothers and sisters. We cannot afford to turn our backs on what we already know.

All I am humbly asking is that we look into our hearts and see how we can work together to help eradicate this foul and disgusting treatment of animals from our precious planet.

This terrible hidden activity on our planet is doing untold damage to our well being; all this suffering we are causing will continue to cause negative effects, through karma, for thousands of years to come, and is severely affecting us right now.

I know that vegetarian diets (especially vegan diets) can be problematic, and especially for those with children; on the other hand we also know that we in the west eat far too much meat, and are suffering great health problems through obesity and heart disease as a result. This meat is poisoned by the suffering created in its production, and this poison is what we are eating and becoming. Remember, we are what we eat.

Our greatest weapon in this modern world is our power as consumers- imagine that if we all reduced our meat intake by 50%, we would be saving the lives of 200 million animals, every single day!

May we all find true happiness; love to all, bram

    i agree.

if humanity wants to achieve a status higher than a hamburger mill,
we should treat other life forms better too!

thank you for communicating the vegan agenda in a friendly and informative manner!

i am open to information about it.

Absolutely! There can be no end to war while the weapons manufacturers control our governments. If you want to keep selling weapons, you have to use them on people somewhere in the world.

Hi Bram, I completely agree. I eat just a little free range chicken and that's about it. I have way too many food allergies to be able to completely eliminate meat. I'd become pretty malnourished.

The other thing we can do for wildlife is to keep our cats indoors, or radically limit the time they have available to kill birds...and when they die, replace them with another pet that is less damaging to the environment. I LOVE cats, but they eat a lot of meat, too--and they have no choice, they are carnivores.

Recent studies in Scandinavia are pointing to the fallacy that dogs are just like wolves, when it comes to preferred diet. Dogs have co-evolved with man to be able to tolerate vast quantities of carbs and even wolves can digest a fair amount of plant material. This is being backed up by research. They do well on healthy carbohydrates.

My dog is on vegetarian dry dog food mixed with a heaping tablespoon of canned chicken per day. That's it. Her health has improved since I took her off commercially prepared dry meat based dog food. The worst thing you can do for your dogs is give them the end products of the very worst in agri-business practices. They are eating misery and disease. And what goes for them, goes double for us!

In more ways than one. The cancer stage of capitalism is represented by...increasing cancer rates and a bottom line that demands the economy be based on war profiteering

Another interesting fact- from here- http://www.vegansociety.com/resource...ent/land.aspx- is that it takes over 20 sq.m. of land to produce 1 kg of beef, and only 0.3 sq.m. to produce 1 kg of vegetables. Thats why Dennis Avery, Director of the Centre for Global Food Issues, states that: "The world must create five billion vegans in the next several decades, or triple its total farm output without using more land."

You can count me in for starters!!

I will never be a vegetarian, much less a vegan, but I do empathize with most of what you state. Factory farms are an abomination. We really do need to cut our meat consumption dramatically. Most meat is not healthful anyway, as it has been fed garbage, kept in horrid conditions, and fed a constant diet of hormones, antibiotics, and God only knows what else.

Canines do need plant material. In the wild they usually get it by eating the intestines of the prey, which will contain the plants the prey ate.

But, vegetarian dog food? I don't know. I'm guessing it has lots of grains, which would be very unhealthful.

My dog's food is mainly soy protein, but she can handle a fair amount of rice. Dogs truly can survive quite well on a well balanced (for dogs) vegetarian diet, if they can tolerate soy. I think that gmo grains and corn could be a problem for a number of reasons. They are absorbing round up, because the plants are absorbing it without dying, and modern wheat may actually have too MUCH protein (gluten) and that may be problematic for them as much as it is for us.

It's a ridiculously tough row to hoe. The soy in her food is probably GMO. I just do the best I can. There doesn't seem to be a way to be completely pure when it comes to diet.
If you are cutting your meat consumption you are helping the planet and your body. It's really fantastic when our moral impulses lead to better health for ourselves and the planet. I eat free range eggs, too, along with free range chicken, just not in large quantities.

Our meat obsession is causing so much disease in humans, horrible treatment of the animals and environmental destruction.

For the record, I eat meat, although much less than I used to.

If only we all had full realisation of the impact of our choices and more importantly, if only we took full responsibility for those impacts and full responsibility for repairing the damage.

When shown the horrors, most will agree it is terrible and something must be done. Then the moment is over, we forget all about it and change nothing.

Our detatchment from our food sources is a big part of the problem because when it's out of our sight, it's out of our minds.

Thank you Bram. Your threads always seem to provoke thought in me, especially when it comes to animals and how we treat, use, abuse and kill them for food. The realities are saddening and I have always tended to look the other way. I appreciate the other side of things as hard as they are to face.
