    Default My Holistic Medicine Cabinet

On this thread I would like to share with Avalon some of my Super Herbs that I utilize during the week. Feel free to post yours as well. I would love some audience participation, I'm all ears, and willing to learn

Chlorella (By Sun) - Chlorella is a fresh water, single-celled algae that grows in fresh water. Chlorella emerged over 2 billion years ago, and was the first form of a plant with a well-defined nucleus. Because Chlorella is a microscopic organism, it was not discovered until the late 19th century, deriving its name from the Greek, "chloros" meaning green and "ella" meaning small. In fact that chlorella contains the highest amount of chlorophyll of any known plant.

It is thought to boost the immune system and help fight infection. It has been shown to increase the good bacteria in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which helps to treat ulcers, colitis, diverticulosis and Crohn's disease. It is also used to treat constipation, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Chlorella has been used to treat cancer and also help protect the body from the effects of cancer radiation treatment.

The algae, which is a popular food supplement in Asia and has been used as energy-producing food for centuries, is often used to prevent or curb the spread of cancer, enhance immunity, promote a good balance of bacteria in the gut, and lower blood cholesterol. In Japan, it is traditionally used as a treatment for duodenal ulcers, gastritis, hypertension, diabetes, hypoglycemia, asthma, and constipation. More recently, it is has been touted as an effective therapy for elevated cholesterol levels, a prophylactic to ward of infections and, and adjunct treatment for cancer.

Chlorella is now used as an adjunct supplement during radiation treatment for cancer. Its abundance of chlorophyll is known to protect the body against ultraviolet radiation.

It is a nutrient-dense superfood that contains 60% protein, 18 amino acids (including all the essential amino acids), and various vitamins and minerals. One of its unique properties is a phytonutrient called CGF.

Oil Of Oregano (GaiaHerbs) Oregano is nature's antibiotic. It may be one reason why people who eat a Mediterranean diet tend to live longer and healthier lives. Besides making pizza, pasta and salad taste great, the oil of the wild oregano plant has been shown to kill unwanted bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses. It's a powerful antihistamine. New research is finding that oil of oregano is as effective against colitis as prescription drugs without the harmful side effects. It is also able to regenerate liver cells.

Oil of oregano is made from the leaves and flowers of the wild oregano plant found growing naturally in the remote mountainous regions of the Mediterranean where there is little pollution. It is a member of the mint family. The flowers and leaves are harvested when the oil content of the plant is at its highest. It has a history that stretches back to the ancient Greeks, whose name for it translates into "joy of the mountain". They used it to treating infection related illnesses and diseases. As the dangers of antibiotic use become more apparent, health conscious people as well as holistic healers are looking for natural alternatives to treat infections. They are finding oil of oregano to be the perfect natural choice.

ParaShield (GaiaHerbs) Great for killing parasites. Parasites are known to cause cancer as they spread and find a place to thrive in the body. These parasites can attach to the liver, the colon, the pancreas etc. Thereby causing disease and in turn cancer. By Dr Hulda Clark. The human species is now heavily infested with parasites, particularly the intestinal fluke Fasciolopsis buskii, the sheep liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, the pancreatic fluke of cattle Eurytrema pancreatica, the human liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis and the common roundworm, Ascaris. The increase in fluke parasitism is due to the establishment of a new “biological reservoir” in cattle, fowl and household pets. The increase in Ascaris parasitism is probably due to harboring of household pets. The Main Ingredients That Dr Hulda Clark recommends in destroying many parasites are contained in Para Shield.

    Black Walnut Hulls
    Wormwood
    Cloves

Spirulina - (GaiaHerbs) Spirulina is a simple one-celled microscopic blue-green algae with the scientific name Arthrospira platensis. Under a microscope, spirulina appears as long, thin, blue-green spiral threads. The odor and taste of spirulina is similar to seaweed.

Spirulina can be found in many freshwater environments, including ponds, lakes, and rivers. It thrives best under pesticide-free conditions with plenty of sunlight and moderate temperature levels, but it is also highly adaptable, surviving even in extreme conditions. More than 25,000 species of algae live everywhere - in water, in soils, on rocks, on plants. They range in size from a single cell to giant kelp over 150 feet long. Macroalgae are large like seaweeds. Microalgae are microscopic. Ocean microalgae, called phytoplankton, are the base of the ocean food web. Spirulina is often deemed the most nutritionally complete of all food supplements, containing a rich supply of many important nutrients, including protein, complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins A, K, and B complex. It also has a high supply of carotenoids such as beta carotene and yellow xanthophylls which have antioxidant properties. It is also rich in chlorophyll, fatty and nucleic acids, and lipids. Thus, spirulina has countless uses as a supplement for maintaining good health and for preventing diseases.

Spirulina is the richest beta carotene food, with a full spectrum of ten mixed carotenoids. About half are orange carotenes: alpha, beta and gamma and half are yellow xanthophylls. They work synergistically at different sites in our body to enhance antioxidant protection. Twenty years of research proves eating beta carotene rich fruits and vegetables gives us real anti-cancer protection. Synthetic beta carotene has not always shown these benefits. Research in Israel showed natural beta carotene from algae was far more effective. Natural is better assimilated and contains the key 9-cis isomer, lacking in synthetic. As suspected, natural carotenoids in algae and vegetables have the most antioxidant and anti-cancer power.

Spirulina is an ideal anti-aging food; concentrated nutrient value, easily digested and loaded with antioxidants. Beta carotene is good for healthy eyes and vision. Spirulina beta carotene is ten times more concentrated than carrots.

Iron is essential to build a strong system, yet is the most common mineral deficiency. Spirulina is rich in iron, magnesium and trace minerals, and is easier to absorb than iron supplements.

Spirulina is the highest source of B-12, essential for healthy nerves and tissue, especially for vegetarians.

    Healthy Dieting with Spirulina

About 60% of spirulina’s dry weight is protein, which is essential for growth and cell regeneration. It is a good replacement for fatty and cholesterol-rich meat and dairy products in one’s diet. Every 10 grams of spirulina can supply up to 70% of the minimum daily requirements for iron, and about three to four times of minimum daily requirements for vitamins A (in the form of beta carotene), B complex, D,and K. By itself, it does not contain vitamin C, but it helps maintain this vitamin’s potency.

Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, a compound found in breast milk that helps develop healthier babies. Moreover, with its high digestibility, spirulina has been proven to fight malnutrition in impoverished communities by helping the body absorb nutrients when it has lost its ability to absorb normal forms of food.

Another health benefit of spirulina is that it stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria in your digestive tract to promote healthy digestion and proper bowel function. It acts as a natural cleanser by eliminating mercury and other deadly toxins commonly ingested by the body.

Spirulina also increases stamina and immunity levels in athletes, and its high protein content helps build muscle mass. At the same time, it can curb hunger that may develop during the most demanding training routines. Thus, it indirectly acts as an effective way to maintain an athlete’s ideal body weight.

Raw Garlic - I also take a brand name such as Kyolic Garlic Pills as well. Garlic is awesome for the blood. Raw Garlic is best and Magical to say the least. Garlic (Allium sativum) is one of the earth's greatest health tonics and does indeed have scientifically-proven medicinal properties. It contains a substance called Allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties that are equivalent to a weak penicillin. It is a natural antibiotic and is useful in treating everything from allergies to tonsillitis. Garlic contains many sulfur compounds which detoxify the body, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Garlic has also demonstrated anti-cancer, antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant effects.

The smooth muscle relaxant Adenosine is found in Garlic and this seems to help lower blood pressure. Garlic is also used to help prevent atherosclerosis (plaque build up in the arteries causing blockage and possibly leading to heart attack or stroke), reduce colds, coughs and bronchitis.

Garlic can stimulate the production of glutathione, an amino acid which is known to be a very potent antioxidant and de-toxifier. See also our article on NAC for more gluathione info. Antioxidants help scavenge free radicals.

Free radicals are particles that can damage cell membranes, interact with genetic material and possibly contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of conditions including heart disease and cancer. Free radicals occur naturally in the body but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking and air pollution) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause over time.

Atherosclerosis: Studies suggest that fresh garlic and garlic supplements may prevent blood clots and destroy plaque. Blood clots and plaque block blood flow and contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Blockage of blood flow to the heart, brain and legs, can lead to heart attack, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease (PVD). People with PVD experience pain in the legs when they walk and move. If garlic does reduce the build up of plaque then strokes, heart attacks and PVD may be less likely to occur in people who eat garlic or take garlic supplements.

High Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure: A number of studies have found that garlic reduces elevated total cholesterol levels and lowers blood pressure more effectively than placebo. However, the extent to which garlic is effective is small.

Turmeric - I eat one piece of raw organic turmeric per week. Indians have known the health benefits of turmeric for thousands of years. More recent studies have proven that the people of India were right in their use of turmeric for medicinal purposes. Grown in South Asia, this herb in the Ginger family (Zingiberaceae) was first known as Indian Saffron. The root system of bulbous rhizomes boiled and dried produces a product that is then ground into a powder. Turmeric has a peppery and somewhat bitter flavor, is deep yellowish orange in color, and is used to make curry.

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory and disinfecting properties. This explains its healing powers when applied to cuts and abrasions. Taken orally as an anti-inflammatory, turmeric does not have the side-effects commonly associated with some modern pharmaceutical medicines. These include intestinal bleeding, ulcers, and the decrease of white blood cells. This makes turmeric a safe alternative to some non-prescription drugs.

Studies on mice and test grous of people have shown numerous benefits of using turmeric. Scientific claims prove the benefits of the herb aud in the relief of digestive complications and inflammatory benefits. Studies on mice have proven successful on slowing progression and preventing various forms of cancer.

Turmeric's detoxification qualities promote healthy digestion and may aid in weight management. Studies have shown that it helps clear LDL (bad cholesterol) from the liver and enhances liver function. Because of its detoxification and anti-inflammatory qualities, turmeric is used as a dietary supplement for relief from irritable bowel syndrome and stomach disorders. Benefits of turmeric consumption include the reduction of gas and bloating.

Turmeric also reduces the buildup of plaque associated with cardiovascular disease. Curcumin in turmeric lowers two inflammatory enzymes, LOX and COX-2. This helps stop platelets from gathering to form blood clots. Turmeric reduces blood sugar levels, a property valuable for helping those suffering from diabetes.

Using turmeric may have effects on slowing or preventing many forms of cancer. It slows the spread of cancer cells through elimination. Studies have produced evidence that turmeric can aid in preventing breast cancer from spreading to the lungs. It may help prevent colon cancer, and possibly aid in the prevention of pancreatic cancer.

Other foods combined with turmeric boost its healing capabilities. When combined with cauliflower, turmeric may help prevent prostate cancer. Onions may enhance the effects of turmeric on preventing colon cancer. Turmeric also helps prevent melanoma and stops the growth of new blood vessels developing in tumors. It is also thought to reduce the risk of childhood leukemia.

Kombucha made from a SCOBY. Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast (GT Brand) Sold in the fridge section of your local health food store. http://synergydrinks.com/index.php Or you could make your own SCOBY. The Ancient Chinese called this the “Immortal Health Elixir. There are many videos on YouTube to make a SCOBY. Kombucha was recommended to me from Dolores Cannon's Website awhile back. I have been drinking this Elixir for over 3 years now. Comes in many flavors as well. You could drink this on a daily basis, very healthy and loaded with probiotics and cultures. Starters contain beneficial bacteria and yeast (probiotics) that are able to survive harsh stomach acids to reach the walls of your intestines and recolonize it more effectively.
Probiotics that are natural to the human GI tract help re-colonize the “good guys” that boost your immunity and your energy. Probiotics that are compatible with each other create the greatest synergistic health benefits.

FlaxSeed Oil - I use the liquid form on my salads and anytime i cook with oil. great for high blood pressure, Omega 3's and is known to Lower Cholesterol.

Cinnamon Yup Cinnamon, awesome herb. Great in the coffee filter when you make a pot of coffee.

    Red Onions or Onions/Raw

Water - I drink Fiji Water nothing else, Fiji has a high PH value in it, very alkaline.

    Assorted Nuts, Almonds etc.

These are just a few of my Favorites. Please contribute if you will. Im all ears and willing to learn more from our Avalon Family Members......

Wow, this is so awesome. I am working towards a medicinal herb farm here in Costarica, a dream I have had for many years, however I know so little about herbs themselves. I am very interested in Flora Blanca but have not found any information as to what it is. I beleive it is a tree.
I did know about the oregeno and always keep a bottle of young living oils with me wherever I go. I get some strange looks when I slather it on, however I find it too strong to drink, guese i'll have to eat more. How do they know when they are producing the most oil I wonder? I would love to make my own oils and am looking into how to do that now. I recently planted cocoa or coco so I can make my own chocolate.

I look forward to exchanging ideas and learning new things. Thanks for the thread.

    Health benefits of ginger root

Ginger has been in use since ancient times for its anti-inflammatory, carminative, anti-flatulent, and anti-microbial properties. Total antioxidant strength measured in terms of oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) of ginger root is 14840 µmol TE/100 g.The root contains health benefiting essential oils such as gingerol, zingerone, shogaol, farnesene, and small amounts of β-phelladrene, cineol, and citral. Gingerols help improve the intestinal motility and have been anti-inflammatory, painkiller (analgesic), nerve soothing, anti-pyretic as well as anti-bacterial properties. Studies have shown that it may reduce nausea induced by motion sickness or pregnancy and may help relieve migraine headache.Zingerone, a chemical compound which gives pungent character to the ginger root, is effective against E.coli induced diarrhea, especially in children. This herb root only has 80 calories per 100 g and contains no cholesterol. Nonetheless, it composes many essential nutrients and vitamins such as pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5) that are required for optimum health.Furthermore, the herb also contains a good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.

    Good Read Here on Ginger:

Ginger root (Zingiber officinale) is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion and is used for wind, colic, irritable bowel, loss of appetite, chills, cold, flu, poor circulation, menstrual cramps, dyspepsia (bloating, heartburn, flatulence), indigestion and gastrointestinal problems such as gas and stomach cramps. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems. It has also been indicated for arthritis, fevers, headaches, toothaches, coughs, bronchitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, to ease tendonitis, lower cholesterol and blood-pressure and aid in preventing internal blood clots.

Ginger has been well researched and many of its traditional uses confirmed. It is well known as a remedy for travel sickness, nausea and indigestion. It is a warming remedy, ideal for boosting the circulation, lowering high blood pressure and keeping the blood thin in higher doses. Ginger is anti-viral and makes a warming cold and flu remedy. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory herb and there has been much recent interest in its use for joint problems.

Ginger root is a medicinal herb used primarily for the treatment of Dyspepsia (discomfort after eating), this includes the symptoms of bloating, heartburn, flatulence, and nausea. It is also considered helpful as a preventative for motion sickness and as a digestive. Due to it's antispasmodic characteristic some people have used it to help ease menstrual cramps. In some traditional systems it is credited with the ability to treat arthritis, fevers, headaches, and toothaches.

Ginger may also be taken orally as a herbal remedy to prevent or relieve nausea resulting from chemotherapy, motion sickness, pregnancy, and surgery.

Results of laboratory studies as well as from small studies conducted among seasick sailors or ship passengers, found that ginger generally has more effectiveness for relieving motion sickness than placebo (or sugar pills). Several comparisons between ginger and prescription or non-prescription drugs have been conducted for relieving the nausea of pregnancy, but results are inconclusive.

In some of the studies, similar effectiveness was seen between ginger and the comparator drug, while other studies found less or no effectiveness for ginger as compared to the drugs. In general, no adverse effects were noted from using ginger, for either the mother or the developing baby. Ginger has also been used in folk medicine to treat minor gastrointestinal problems such as gas or stomach cramps. Recent studies may confirm that ginger directly affects the gastrointestinal tract, helping to improve muscle tone and to prevent abnormally rapid and strong intestinal contractions.

Results of limited studies in animals with diabetes show that ginger may reduce blood levels of sugar and cholesterol, while also lowering blood pressure. However, no human studies with similar results have been reported. A few small studies that have been conducted in humans have shown some promise for supplemental ginger in the treatment of both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

If a person has exercised too much or suffers from arthritis or rheumatism, ginger has been known to ease inflammation of the joints and muscle tissue. Due to its tremendous circulation-increasing qualities, ginger is thought to improve the complexion. It has reduced nervousness, eased tendonitis, and helped sore throats return to normal. Studies demonstrate that ginger can lower cholesterol levels by reducing cholesterol absorption in the blood and liver. It may also aid in preventing internal blood clots.

_**New Research! **- Ginger root was recently the subject of a startling new research report presented at The American Association for Cancer research conference in Phoenix. In the study, ginger actually suppressed cancer cells suggesting that the herb was able to fuel apoptosis or the death of the cancer cells. Ginger has been shown to work against skin, ovarian, colon and breast cancer. But it had not been shown to halt the progression of cancer until now. However, more research is required to confirm this._

This stimulating herb is warming to the system. In her book '10 Essential Herbs' author Lalitha Thomas describes the properties: "The major active ingredients in ginger are terpenes (quite similar to the chemical action of turpentine) and an oleo-resin called ginger oil. These two, and other active ingredients in ginger, provide antiseptic, lymph-cleansing, circulation-stimulating, and mild constipation relief qualities along with a potent perspiration-inducing action that is quite effective in cleansing the system of toxins."

    Nice thread, Whitefeather.

Yukondiva, making essential oils is a complicated process. It's usually best to buy them. But you can make a watery version yourself, by piling chopped up herb in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil, with a well-fitting lid on the pot. The steam that collects on the lid will contain droplets of the volatile essential oil. Collect it into a measuring cup and pour into a small bottle. It takes a lot of herb to make a few drops of oil.

When you harvest herbs, the best time is on a sunny, warm/hot day, around 9-10 AM when the oils are concentrated in the leaves. This is after the sun has dried up any dew, but before the oils disperse throughout the plant as they do during the day. Remember to harvest no more than 1/4 to 1/3 of the plant.

Are you wanting to dry the herbs for tea, or using them fresh to make tincture?

    "How to Make Water Kefir"

Kefir explained and it’s benefits from from kefir.net

“Kefir’s tart and refreshing flavor is similar to a drinking-style yogurt, but it contains beneficial yeast as well as friendly ‘probiotic’ bacteria found in yogurt. The naturally occurring bacteria and yeast in kefir combine symbiotically to give superior health benefits when consumed regularly. It is loaded with valuable vitamins and minerals and contains easily digestible complete proteins.

    What are Lacto-Fermented Vegetables?

“...Lacto-fermentation is a natural process to preserve foods and stops the growth of bacteria that causes foods to go bad. Unlike modern preservation methods which kills all the good stuff in food, lacto-fermentation make nutrients more absorbable and provides the intestines with friendly bacteria. The heating process of commercial fermented foods destroys the enzymes and friendly bacteria. The process of lacto-fermentation turns sugars and starches into helpful acids, mainly lactic acid. Lactic acid breaks down the proteins and helps the body absorb them. It also aids in the absorption of iron. Lactic acid does not cause the body to become over acidic. Lacto-fermented foods help to normalize the acidity of our stomach.

Foods that have been lacto-fermented contain many vitamins, friendly bacteria and enzymes that our bodies need. They contain B vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids, digestive enzymes, lactase, lactic acid and probiotics. Traditionally foods that have been lacto-fermented include sauerkraut, sour dough bread, tamari, chutney, yogurt, kefir, and kimchi. It supports our immune systems, reduces cholesterol, acts as and anti-biotic and anti-carcinogen.

Lacto-fermented foods promote the growth of friendly intestinal bacteria and aids in digestion. It strengthens the digestive system and increases the vitamin levels in our bodies because we are able to absorb them more readily. Lacto-fermentation neutralizes phytic acid, an unhealthy chemicals in grains and beans. Phytic acid blocks the absorption of calcium, iron, phosphorus and zinc, which leads to mineral deficiencies and bone loss. It also acts as an enzyme inhibitor. Lacto-fermentation neutralizes the phytic acid and helps break down gluten and sugar. Lacto-fermentation of dairy makes it more digestible and adds lactase to the dairy products. Soybeans are extremely high in phytic acid and must always be eaten fermented, preferably naturally by lacto-fermentation....”

What is MMS?

"MMS is a unique chemical oxidizer that has the ability to enter the body, kill pathogens that are causing diseases, and touch absolutely nothing else... MMS also destroys heavy metal compounds in the body, and many different poisons. MMS, in the strength used to kill pathogens, can move through the stomach, through the blood, and through various other organs, and cause no reaction or damage of any kind.

The only thing that MMS can do in the body is kill disease. It is used by the immune system which, of course, kills pathogens, and causes the death of viruses by preventing them from forming certain proteins."

    Jim V. Humble & MMS - explanation - http://www.miraclemineral.org

    MMS info and video

Some Common Situations: asthma, burns, heart problems, diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, diarrhea, ear ache, eye infections, flu, high blood pressure, HIV and AIDS, incurable disease, staph infection...

From: "The Master Mineral Solution of the Third Millenium (The Updated "The Miracle Mineral Supplement of the 21st Century (2011)," by Jim V. Humble

    MMS Benefits Summary:

Following is what I have observed over the past 11 years. Some of it is my opinion; however, I have discussed all of this information with medical doctors and they have agreed with me. But then, that is their opinion as well. So this is what appears to be happening in the body when activated MMS is ingested.

    Organisms Destroyed:

MMS destroys microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungus, molds, yeast, and parasites that causes various diseases. Viruses are killed by a different mechanism than bacteria and all the other microorganisms: MMS prevents the formation of special proteins necessary for viral growth, thus causing the destruction of the virus. The killing of disease-causing organisms generally takes between 4 hours and 4 weeks, but often less than one week. This is true for all forms of infection and other microorganisms, as well as blood diseases such as leukemia.

    Heavy Metals Oxidized:

MMS oxidizes the heavy metals in the body. I believe this because there have been a number of tests where the roots of a person’s hair were checked before and after taking MMS. About two weeks afterwards, the heavy metals were gone, including mercury, lead, and others. Testing the roots of hair is a good indication of the absence or presence of heavy metals. Oxidation of the heavy metals is not the same as chelating but the results are the same. When a heavy metal is oxidized, it is neutralized and washes out of the body.

    Foreign Matter Neutralized:

MMS is carried throughout the body, where it neutralizes foreign matter that is generally poisonous. When oxidized, poisons are neutralized and are washed out of the body. Almost all poisonous material is easily oxidized. These poisons are attached at various locations and hinder the body’s functions. As they are oxidized, they are detached and washed out of the body same as the heavy metals.

    Poisons Neutralized:

Most forms of poisons from snakes and other venomous animals are oxidized when adequate amounts of MMS are taken. Most food poisons found in restaurants or in your refrigerator are also oxidized. When snake poisons or food poisoning is involved, you should take an MMS dose every 15 minutes.

I just made my first batch of fermented vegies a couple of weeks ago, and will be making my second later this week.
I chopped cabbage, beet, Vidalia onion and garlic in my food processor fairly fine, and filled 2 quart jars about halfway, then filled them about 3/4 full with fresh celery juice instead of salt brine. (There's lots of sodium in celery, so celery is a good substitute, if you don't like the salty taste of brine.)
I left the jars to ferment for 4 days, but next time I will be braver and leave them for a week.
They definitely did bubble and it is necessary to leave the lids loose and have a saucer or something under the jars to catch the overflow.

I made my second batch of coconut kefir last week. The first time, I used mature coconuts (with the brown husks) but it was a lot of work getting the meat separated from the husks. So the second time, I special ordered some young green coconuts from my local grocer. They are about $3 each. They are much easier to husk, and made a much creamier kefir (the first batch was gritty). I need to cut down on cholesterol, so I'm going to make a cultured frozen coconut desert next time I make kefir, to take the place of dairy deserts.

There's lots more info about fermented and cultured foods in the excellent thread that Dawn started at:

Was thinking about starting a similar thread last night.

Rockrose: supposedly helps prevent or fight infections, including influenza. It helps, I can say from experience and others have told me the same. Rockrose is a polyphenol rich plant I drink two cups of tea every day.

Curcumin: Early research suggest turmeric can keep several kinds of cancers from growing or spreading

Strong antioxidant effect that can reduce risk of cancer but also protect the brain, liver (detoxification effect), and other key organs from damage by toxic substances such as drugs, radiation, excessive alcohol, heavy metals etc.

Anti-inflammatory effect (useful to treat or prevent diseases such as arthritis, IBS etc.)

Can help your digestive system due to its strong by reducing inflammation (has been shown to help reduce and heal stomach ulcers)

Can help protect your cardiovascular system by preventing the oxidation of cholesterol which can lead to blood vessel damage. Turmeric can also help reduce your "bad" cholesterol level

Some research also suggest turmeric may help protect against Alzheimer's (neurodegenerative) disease. Alzheimer rate is very low for example in countries such as India.

Lapacho tea: Due to its antimicrobial properties, lapacho tea is used in alternative medicine to treat a variety of infectious disorders including Candida yeast infections, infectious diarrhea, bladder infections, herpes simplex virus, parasitic infections such as schistomiasis and ringworm; gonorrhea, syphilis and brucellosis. In addition, people drink lapacho tea to help treat viral respiratory infections including the common cold, flu and swine flu.

Jiaogulan Tea: supposedly good for lots of things and adaptogenic. Happens to taste good too.

Something that helps with anxiety is Passiflora and L-Theanine.

    Hi Onawah,

I rinse the brine off the vegetables so they aren’t salty. It depends on personal taste, so even a little salty taste is too much. Nice to have another option. Thanks for Dawn’s link. I forgot about it. Lots of great information there.

You may be interested about coconut milk kefir:

Quote With coconut milk though you'll need to put them back in cow milk for 24 hours to revitalize for every few weeks they spend in cow milk.
    Questions About Milk Kefir Grains

Question: I rehydrated my kefir grains in cow milk and they came out great. I then switch to unsweetened organic coconut milk for two days and the grains no longer seem to be active, even after switching back to cow milk. Do you know why this could be? If the milk is unaffected after 24-36 hours are the grains no longer active? Thanks.

Answer: Kefir grains can take a few days to adjust to a new milk medium. For example, if you switch your kefir grains from cow to goat milk, it can take a few batches for them to adjust to the composition of the new milk and start working properly. Same thing happens if you go from pasteurize cow milk to raw cow milk and sometimes even different brands of milk (feed, etc. can vary from farm to farm). Different chemical compositions can mean an adjustment period of up to a few batches. So go ahead and put them back in coconut milk and give them a batch or two to adjust (maybe just the coconut milk that isn't kefiring in the meantime to cook or in a smoothie or something). They should perk up and start doing their thing in a few days. With coconut milk though you'll need to put them back in cow milk for 24 hours to revitalize for every few weeks they spend in cow milk.

Question: When using milk kefir grains with coconut milk, can it be unsweetened coconut milk that does not contain any sugar?

Answer: Ideally you'd want to use unsweetened coconut milk. Any additives have the potential to interact negatively with the kefir grains and potentially damage them. Unsweetened would be safest.

    Pressed Salads

    From eHow:

Pressed salads are made by compacting traditional salad ingredients like vegetables and fruits. Compacting is done by placing a heavy object on top of the prepared and dressed ingredients and letting them sit so the flavors mingle. The pressure can be inflicted by jars or bowls filled with water, clean large cans of commercially packaged foods or with a pickle or salad press, a specialized tool that utilizes a spring mechanism to exert pressure.

This is the machine mentioned above that I use:

    Pressed Salad Benefits

Many of the hard fibers in raw vegetables and fruits are difficult to digest and partial digestion prevents some of the nutrients in them from being absorbed by the body. Pressing the vegetables breaks down these fibers while causing a slight fermentation, which is believed to aid in digestion and possibly strengthen the body's natural immunities to sickness and disease.

    Preparing the Food

Thoroughly wash the vegetables and fruits and cut them into thin slices or matchstick size pieces. It is important for the pieces to be small so they exude natural juices during the process. Dry the vegetables in a salad spinner or with thick sheets of paper or cotton towels and place them into the bowl in which they will be pressed.

Here are two pressed salad methods from "Aveline Kushi's Introducing Macrobiotic Cooking," by Wendy Esko and Aveline Kushi, 1987.

    Pressed Salad Method #1

Place daikon and carrots in a pickle press. Add the sea salt and vinegar. Mix thoroughly. Place the top on the press and tightly screw down. Let sit 1 hour. Remove and squeeze out excess liquid or, if too salty, rinse quickly under cold water. Place in a bowl and garnish with the roasted black sesame seeds.

Ingredients: 1 c daikon, sliced in paper thin rounds and then thin matchsticks, 1/2 c carrots, sliced in paper thing rounds and then thin matchsticks, 1/4 tsp of sea salt, 1-2 T brown rice vinegar, 1 t roasted black sesame seeds

    Pressed Salad Method #2

Place all vegetables in a pickle press. Add the water and umeboshi vinegar and mix well. Place the top on the press and screw down tightly. Let sit for 1 hour. Remove, squeeze out excess liquid, place in a bowl and serve. As a variation, use Chinese or regular cabbage, thinly sliced; grated carrot; white onion; or any other vegetable.

Ingredients: 1/2 head iceberg lettuce, thinly sliced, 1 cucumber, washed and thinly sliced, 4-5 radishes, sliced in thin rounds, 1 stalk celery, sliced in thin diagonal, 1/2 c red onions, slice in paper thin rounds or half-rounds, 1 c water, 1/4 umeboshi vinegar

All ingredients are optimally dried for maximum life force.
100% TruGanic™. TruGanic™ is a purist, hard-core, quality standard significantly beyond Organic. In addition to no pesticides being used anywhere in the growing process, TruGanic™ includes authentic standards for production, non-toxic cleaning agents and pest control, electromagnetic radiation, processing agents additives, air quality, and actual verification of purity.
EcoFresh Nutrient Lock™. Our dark glass with unique metal lid and oxygen absorber protects 100% of nutrients (creates a vacuum). Glass is recycled/recyclable, does not outgass (see Note below) and is non-toxic to melt down. Plastic bottles and metal/foil pouches (worst and not recyclable) dramatically degrade nutrient levels. Plastic outgasses and is highly toxic to melt down.
Note: All plastic containers (more so in soft plastic) release gases during the aging and degradation of a material. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from plastic negatively affect our health.

Default Re: My Holistic Medicine Cabinet

I love the fact that some of us are taking our health back into our own hands.

My health cabinet does not contain many herbs however I always work with the following when I feel unwell or want to improve my well being:

    1. MMS, (Jim Humble discoverer) known to kill all viruses and a bloody knigtmare for big pharma and FDA as they don't know how to stop its production.
    2. Garlic, I eat it raw (mainly in salads and soothies), I also massage it onto my skin with some organic oil.
    3. Lemongrass oil, very effective as a mosquito repellent - massage it onto skin with some oil, re-apply when needed.
    4. Lemongrass herb, excellent for bringing down fever (when drank as tea).
    5. Bentonite clay, and a local version called “Calabar chalk” a very potent detoxifier for overall health with loads of minerals. I drink it almost everyday to give me energy and to cure my anaemia. Its effects were not immediate, however I started to see benefits once I started to maintain regularity.
    6. Raw cocoa beans, very good with antioxidants. I eat a handful whenever I remember...aparently is very good for detoxifying the pineal gland. I live in West Africa and we have an ample supply of these from the cocoa farmers!
    7. Live cultures: water kefir, natural yogurt and Kombucha...I drink the water kefir every 48 hours, Kombucha every 5-7 days (when the brew is ready) and I eat yogurt everyday.
    8. Papaya - eaten after a meal helps me and my family with the digestion. We also use it for removing worms from our tummys. We go on a fast for 3 days eating only the seeds which are quite peppery, but sometimes we mixed them with the papaya pulp to make them more palatable...they are hot!
    9. Noni tree - i cold press the leaves and have it as juice, mixed with other fruits (mainly lemon and ginger), this is to boost my enery (especially after I have been ill) and also to help me with constipation. I aso have the noni fruit as juice.
    10. Banana leaves used in a steamy sauna in combination with papaya leaves, lemongrass herb has been used by women in my tribe for eons. It removes aches and pains and tonifies and invigorates the entire body.
    11. Coconut, we love it and eat it raw or we cold press it and then remove the oil (quite easy given that is very hot here) that we use for massage.

I do use other products mainly vegetables and fruits...as someone said (cannot remember if it was roman or greek) "let the food be your medicine"...and was not wrong.

When I relocated here, I did it with the thought in mind that I wanted my life and health back. I have a small land in which I've planted all of my citric trees, noni tree, lemon grass herb, banana etc... And although I know it may not be possible for everybody to have a piece of land, I invite you to give it a try (especially does with not such green fingers, like I was a couple of years ago) and do it in your back yard, any space will do...you can be as creative as you can.

You see, to me, the thought of putting something in my mouth that I have planted and seen grown has a marvellous placebo effect.
Not to mention that indeed it is the way Mother Nature intended to be in the first place.

I hope everything I’ve told you it helps and wish you good luck with your planting.

    Cheers
