    THE PLU CODES AND GMO

What Do Those Codes On Stickers Of Fruits And Some Veggies Mean?

Although they seem like a nuisance, the stickers or labels attached to fruit and some vegetables have more of a function than helping scan the price at the checkout stand.
The PLU code, or price lookup number printed on the sticker, also tells you how the fruit was grown.
By reading the PLU code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides.

Here are the basics of what you should know:

    1. If there are only 4 numbers in the PLU, that begin with a 3 or a 4, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides.
The last four letters of the PLU code are simply what kind of vegetable or fruit. An example is that all bananas are labeled with the code of 4011.

    2. If there are 5 numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8″, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable.
Genetically modified fruits and vegetables trump being organic.
So, it is possible to eat organic produce that are grown from genetically modified seeds.
A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011

    3. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9″, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified.
An organic banana would be: 94011

NOTE PLU codes and their organic prefixes are in wide use but GE codes are rare at best....

14 Steps to Cut Out Processed Food

14 Weeks of “Real Food” Mini-Pledges
•Week 1: Two fruits and/or vegetables per meal – Eat a minimum of two different fruits or vegetables (preferably organic) with every breakfast, lunch, and dinner meal.

•Week 2: “Real” beverages – Beverages will be limited to coffee, tea, water, and milk (only naturally sweetened with a little honey or 100% pure maple syrup). One cup of juice will be allowed throughout the week, and wine (preferably red) will be allowed in moderation (an average of one drink per day).

•Week 3: Meat – All meat consumed this week will be locally raised (within 100-miles of your hometown). Meat consumption will also be limited to 3 – 4 servings this week, and when it is eaten meat will not be presented as the “focal point” of the meal. Instead meat will be treated as a side item or simply used to help flavor a dish.

•Week 4: No fast food or deep-fried foods – No fast food or any foods that have been deep-fried in oil.

•Week 5: Try two new whole foods – Try a minimum of two new whole foods that you’ve never had before.

•Week 6: No low-fat, lite or nonfat food products – Do not eat any food products that are labeled as “low-fat,” “lite,” “light,” “reduced fat,” or “nonfat.”

    •Week 7: 100% Whole grain – All grains consumed must be 100% whole-grain.

•Week 8: Stop eating when you feel full – Listen to your internal cues and stop eating when you feel full.

•Week 9: No refined sweeteners – No refined or artificial sweeteners including (but not limited to): white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, sucanat, splenda, stevia, agave, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and cane juice. Foods and beverages can only be sweetened with a moderate amount of honey or maple syrup.

•Week 10: No refined oils – No refined or hydrogenated oils including (but not limited to): vegetable oil, organic vegetable oil, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, organic canola oil, margarine, and grape seed oil.

•Week 11: Eat local foods – Eat at least 1 locally grown or raised food at each meal. This includes, but is not limited to: fruits, vegetables, eggs, grains, nuts, meats, and sweeteners like honey.

•Week 12: No sweeteners – Avoid all added sweeteners including, but not limited to: white sugar, brown sugar, raw sugar, honey, maple syrup, date sugar, maple sugar, sucanat, splenda, stevia, agave, fruit juice concentrate, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup, and cane juice.

•Week 13: Nothing artificial – Avoid all artificial ingredients including, but not limited to: sweeteners, flavors and colors.

•Week 14: No more than 5-indgredients – Avoid any and all packaged food products that contain more than five ingredients no matter what ingredients

    Thanks heyokah, for this.
And for all you Michigan people, please be aware that Sen's Levin and Stabenow both voted AGAINST states rights to label GMO foods. Stabenow recieved $740,926 in campaign contributions from big agri-business. Guess that shouldn't be a big surprise.

Jeffrey M. Smith talking about the GMO threat .

If you have an hour to spare, this interview with Jeffrey M. Smith will be well worth the time. Smith documents how consumption of GM foods has been directly linked with health problems in humans.

In the video, Smith, of the Institute of Responsible Technology documents how consumption of genetically modified foods has been directly linked with reproductive problems, immune system deficiencies, accelerated aging, organ damage and gastrointestinal problems.
Smith explains that the immune system problem has been seen consistently in mice and rats who are fed GMO food, and now since humans have started consuming genetically modified foods, auto-immune diseases and allergies have increased.
He explains in detail the various chemicals used by Monsanto and other biotech industries and their impact on both health and the environment as a whole.
This is probably the most detailed interview yet on the dangers of GMOs.

Does any member have a doubt to the motives of Bill Gates, one of the world's wealthiest men, when he invested millions of dollars into the Norway Doomsday Seed Bank, along with the Rockefeller Foundation?

One can only speculate what those motives were, but, may it be synchronous to what one may speculate when one becomes aware that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has invested into 500,000 shares of Monsanto, the world leader in GMO seeds?

Update on the honeybee plight. Poor little guys are expected to eat pesticide laden pollen and nectars and keep cranking out the work for our food supply. Yet hives have experienced mass deaths again this year. Not on the news.

This long article is a good read about current situations.

Thank you for your contribution about the bees CdnSirian.

From the article I post this little part about what we could do.

So, how can we help protect the bees ?

Quote If you would like to learn more about the economic, political and ecological implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee, check out the documentary film Vanishing of the Bees. If you’d like to get involved, here are four actions you can take to help preserve and protect our honeybees:

•Support organic farmers and shop at local farmer's markets as often as possible. You can "vote with your fork" three times a day. (When you buy organic, you are making a statement by saying "no" to GMOs and toxic pesticides.)

•Cut the use of toxic chemicals in your house and on your lawn, and use only organic, all-natural forms of pest control.

•Better yet, get rid of your lawn altogether and plant a garden or other natural habitat. Lawns offer very little benefit for the environment. Both flower and vegetable gardens provide excellent natural honeybee habitats.

•Become an amateur beekeeper. Having a hive in your garden requires only about an hour of your time per week, benefits your local ecosystem, and you can enjoy your own honey! Worldofbeekeping.com,7 and beekeeping.org8 are but two websites that can help you get started.

Victory Gardens to Save Us From GMO.
Are Edible Organic Gardens the Key to Food Sustainability?

In Africa, New Jersey, the UK, Russia, and Mexico, edible organic gardens are paving the way to a new trend in food sustainability and a way to give GMO companies a run for their money.
Utilizing perennial vegetables and incorporating permaculture, along with planting wild growth, organic food forests like the one now growing in urban Seattle, people are slowly getting the hint that we don’t need to rely solely on Big Pharma and the corrupt companies trying to peddle GMO poison in order to sustain healthy, vital food sources for a growing world population.

Restoring local ecosystems with edible gardens and planting regenerative landscapes, even on small scale, can ripple out like a pebble thrown on a lake’s surface to ensure that rich, unpolluted soil, and unaltered seeds nourish unbastardized crops that can flourish for generations to come in every corner of the planet.

Take for example, a family in Pasadena that has allowed their lawn to die, and instead planted an edible organic garden.

During World War I, ‘victory gardens’ were often planted to ensure food supply.
In March 1917, Charles Lathrop Pack organized the National War Garden Commission and launched the war garden campaign and garden campaign.

There are similar activists who attempt to inspire the same idea that was presented in the 1900s – self-sustaining, small scale gardens and farms.
One is called the gorilla gardener in South Central LA, Ron Finley who plants organic gardens in unused public parks where urban blight is common. His efforts completely change the food supply and the communities he plants in.

Although our governments have not declared a formal war against the people, they seem to have been so completely enamored by GMO companies that they are allowing them to plant crops that cause cancer, retard development in fetuses, and cause organ failure.

While we should keep speaking out against Monsanto, even with the recent media blackout, and educate people who aren’t familiar with the near-catastrophic state of our food supply, the ‘victory’ just might be in taking up a shovel and planting some heirloom seeds.

Edible gardens can possibly save our food.
