tick/flea repellent recipe

It's summer! Time for camping, hiking and getting outside to play. Don't let those pesky annoying ticks stop you. Here's how with a simple homemade solution!

Repellent for your pets:

For pets, add 1 cup of water to a spray bottle, followed by 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Ticks hate the smell and taste of vinegar, and will be easily be repelled by this ingredient alone. Then, add two spoonfuls of vegetable or almond oil, which both contain sulfur (another natural tick repellent).

To make a repellent that will also deter fleas, mix in a few spoonfuls of lemon juice, citrus oil, or peppermint oil, any of which will repel ticks and fleas while also creating a nicely scented repellent. Spray onto the pet's dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas including eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. When outdoors for an extended period, spray this solution on two to three times per day.

For you and your family:

In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of water. To make a scented solution so you do not smell like bitter vinegar all day, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil.

Eucalyptus oil is a calm, soothing scent that also works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong crisp scent that also repel ticks.

After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin, and hair before going outdoors. Reapply every four hours to keep ticks at bay, and examine your skin and hair when back inside to make sure no ticks are on the body.

Great post, I hate ticks, this year seems especially bad. What I read is that coconut oil is supposed to be very effective, ticks don't like the lauric acid contained in coconut oil.

Earlier this year lost a dog that had spent most of his life on K9 Advantix. He had blood cancer and a tumour on his heart that burst.

Common sense tells us, if we're putting a substance on our animals that makes them toxic to the bugs, how is it not toxic to them?? Just like GMO foods.

We're all doing the best we know at the time, though, and it's all a learning process. Seems like another lifetime that I trusted a pharmaceutical company... For my family (human and animal) or myself.

My 6 year old daughter kept telling me that mosquitos didn´t bite her when she had coconut oil on. I wasn`t really taking her seriously...although I love coconut oil I had no idea it repelled insects. Looks like she´s right

I don't understand... Coconuts are a completely renewable resource. They come off the tree without the tree coming down.

If you cut down the tree, there are no more coconuts (or dates depending on what kind of palm tree it is).

My dogs need a non toxic solution, thanks much!

I'm going to try MMS on a few dogs from the pound and see if it clears up heart worms, if it does that's one more toxin i can stop feeding my doggies.

um, yeah, wtf? Coconut oil is one of nature's miracle products. Palm oil is extracted from the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera) or the maripa palm (Attalea maripa). Coconut oil is extracted from the renewable kernels (fruit) of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). There are so many benefits to coconut oil (organic coconut oil), that I won't even bother to list them, but google them (and don't click on the Wikipedia link that will inevitably come up - that will tell you jack sh1t, as anything prefaced with wiki always does).

been using a homemade bug repellant this summer and so far so good!! it lasts longer and does a better job than the chemmy versions in the stores.

Ive heard good things about human grade diatomeceous earth is great for parasites and such for dogs and cats as well

I hope something works..soon. Here in coastal GA, the fleas and mosquitos are horrible! and don't even get me started on the "no-see-ums", they are relentless. All the natural spray on stuff...it's like crack for them.
Is tea tree oil bad for dogs? I've seen some really bad cases of skin allergies and I don't know what to do to help?
