Cool The Smell of Death: Can Animals Just Tell?

There was a blurb in a psychology mag recently regarding the ability of household plants to sense the deaths of small marine animals killed in a nearby experiment.

Shrimp were dumped into boiling water at random times and electrodes attached to the potted plant tracked the organism's reaction.

    Apparently the plant became distressed.

Now, my question is about fish. Recently I started going to a local Chinese restaurant where a large number of goldfish swim in an uncovered tank. They are usually docile except for the largest fish, who is cowardly.

The fish are not typically skittish. However, one night I went fishing at a local lake, about 12 miles from the restaurant. There were some unintended casualties during this trip.

The next afternoon I saw the fish at the Chinese restaurant, and the instant I came through the door, they all darted away in terror.

I know that fish have an amazing sense of smell--

    Any theories?

Animals and plants can perceive just like humans can. But our lack of knowledge regarding animals and plants makes us assume that they don't feel or use their instincts.

You may find this interesting, its about plants but I believe it is the same for all animals.
They did studies using polygraph on plants. There is a longer version somewhere but couldnt find it.

Animals(both domesticated and non-domesticated)--have the use of a sixth sense--one that has long been forgotten--or calcified in humans. Animals can sense slight changes or variations in the electromagentic frequencies or wave patterns in other mammals and in the earth.
Where as we humans rely mostly on the information from our visual cortex or auditory functions for information. Animals have an uncanny capacity for sensing imminent trouble usually through their olfactory glands(which in some species are quite numerous) to channel the information they receive. The slight variations in dying or mutated cells are interpreted through these sensory receptors--causing animals to be ever on guard---just ask anyone who has ever worked in Long Term Care. The cat is the ever present watcher for death.
If in disbelief--I invite you to view Oscar's Sixth Sense---The cat Who watches death on youtube(my apologies for not posting the link--but I have not been able to do that as of yet

In regards to vitalux's post, I do remember reading about a cat that would visit with each person\patient around time of their passing, it was intriguing and scary at the same time. I like to think that cat was there to assist with the transfer to the other side.

when i go over to feed my little cyclids i always think, "come over here little fishies, ive got some yummy food!" and they always come running. sometimes i go over there and just look at them and not feed, them. so its fun to do both and experiment. i do believe they do know who i am and that i'm friendly.
