I'm sure this is nothing. I'm sure it's fine. I'm sure it's okay. I'm pretty sure. I hope.

Mike's traveling. In San Deigo at the moment. Standing outside, having been evacuated from the hotel type place because of a bomb threat.

So, um, I'm just mentioning it because if anyone wants to help, I'm sending protective energies his way. And I appreciate every bit of help I get, always, so I thought I would just put this out there.

back from being out of town for a full 4 days. 4 days of getting up at 5:20 in the morning. yuck.

Although, watching the sun come up, instead of going down, was a nice difference. Watching a city of 10 million awaken was a bit, er..close. Not my favorite environment. One time I thought there were too many seagulls around, so told them to leave....so they all simultaneously...left. A few people noticed.

Take a doughnut (not a traditional British one, but an American one with a hole in the middle). Lay it on a chopping block. Take a sharp knife and hold the blade vertical, positioning it so that its edge is exactly above the inside edge of the doughnut. Cut vertically downwards to split the doughnut in two. Lemniscates were named by the Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernoulli, who published a description of them in 1694. He is remembered for his studies of one member of the set in particular, now called the lemniscate of Bernoulli. The one in your doughnut (which is an approximation to the geometric shape called a torus) is the lemniscate of Booth, named for James Booth, a nineteenth-century mathematician of Irish birth who worked in the same field.

Sorry, you need to upload the mp3 on a website so you'll have an http.
A couple of sites you could try are sendspace or mediafire. You likely know some too.

I had 3 garden visitors today:

2 were exquisite dragonflies: one was smaller-bodied and a crimson red color, the other was quite large, deep verdant green. I was almost able to coax the green one to land on my finger. He hovered near my outstretched finger and was thinking about it, but decided to take off and find some dinner instead. Neither one gave me the opportunity to photograph them.

Then, a wasp visited. Not just any old wasp...

It was a species of large-bodied, parasitic wasps (Ichneumon), the females have a tail that is actually an ovipositor (egg laying tube.) I have seen and have photographed one that was about half this size, but this little lady was truly impressive.

Don't be creeped out, if you are afraid of wasps! She won't sting, but if you are a grub, caterpillar, or larvae, she might just poke that long ovipositor in you and lay some eggs. No harm to humans. Parasitic wasps are gardener's friends - the worms/grubs/larvae/caterpillars eat foliage.








Her "tail" (ovipositor) must have been 5 or 6 inches (13 to 15cm) long!

Ain't she a beauty!
