Lightbulb Scientists Building a Star On Earth, Hoping For Ultimate Power Source

The goal: igniting a workable fusion reaction by 2012, fusion reactor operational by 2020.

The website for National Ignition Facility in Livermore California boasts that the facility will be bringing “star power to Earth.” At least, that’s the plan.

According to an article at The Daily Mail, researchers have been working towards this kind of breakthrough since the facility began construction in 1997. Following a series of key experiments over the last few weeks, the £2.2 billion project has inched a little closer to its goal of igniting a workable fusion reaction by 2012. Officials at NIF estimate that a prototype power station version of the fusion reactor could be operational by 2020 and that by 2050, almost a quarter of the United States energy could be supplied by fusion power.

If all goes well, it is hoped that the act of creating a miniature star on Earth will pave the way for clean, inexpensive power that would benefit the whole world.
