Default Why America Wants Drones That Can Kill Without Humans

Well now ... isn't this a lovely thought!?!?

    ______________________________

Scientists, engineers and policymakers are all figuring out ways drones can be used better and more smartly, more precise and less damaging to civilians, with longer range and better staying power. One method under development is by increasing autonomy on the drone itself.

Eventually, drones may have the technical ability to make even lethal decisions autonomously: to respond to a programmed set of inputs, select a target and fire their weapons without a human reviewing or checking the result. Yet the idea of the U.S. military deploying a lethal autonomous robot, or LAR, is sparking controversy. Though autonomy might address some of the current downsides of how drones are used, they introduce new downsides policymakers are only just learning to grapple with.

The basic conceit behind a LAR is that it can outperform and outthink a human operator. "If a drone’s system is sophisticated enough, it could be less emotional, more selective and able to provide force in a way that achieves a tactical objective with the least harm," said Purdue University Professor Samuel Liles. "A lethal autonomous robot can aim better, target better, select better, and in general be a better asset with the linked ISR [intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance] packages it can run."

The idea of drones is one of the most frightening, upsetting, ludicrous notions that humanity has ever concocted. It is inconceivable that any sane person would even think about making drones.

The problem with this is, that once they are developed, the parameters as to what constitutes a valid target can be changed at will. For example, a mobile phone number as a parameter, the colour of a person's skin as a parameter, being on the street after a certain time as a parameter, etc.

Something that must not be allowed, there is no middle ground, and there are no valid arguments for development that negate the concern I have expressed.

    Hey Calz,

Why America Wants Drones That Can Kill Without Humans?

Short answer: Automation makes everything cheaper. Automated wars will be much more profitable and efficient, just like automated factories.

Well I'll raise the stakes just a bit here ... remember how easily Iran hacked the newest and highest tech drone such they were able to take control and make it land???

    Clever.

Consider ... drones are soon to be common right here at home. This could well become a hacker game where who knows who takes over the drone to attack who knows who???

Interesting concept save for the real prize elites will all be cowering in the bunkers ... but I digress.

Maybe because tptb have run out of allies and they fear nobody wants to do the killing for them anymore sooner or later, or turn their guns on them, ultimately, what they fear I think is they have no one left to fight for them, and yeah its cheaper, armed eyes in the sky with an overview just to see who's coming to ask their money back.

    indeed sir.

and if they are indeed that easily hackable, I can easily envision a sticky situation where: OOPS, we didn't mean to kill all your citizens folks...we were HACKED! it just creates more ambiguity, more grey area...hey, kinda like 'the war on terror'. what a n interesting coincidence!

    such a slippery slope...

A tiny town in Colorado will vote on whether to issue hunting licenses allowing folks to shoot down government drones.

The Deer Trail town board tied 3-3 in a Tuesday night meeting on the proposed ordinance, meaning it will go to voters in November.

Deer Trail has received international attention after officials announced last month they wanted to declare open season on government surveillance drones.

RELATED: DRONES TAKE TO THE SKIES DOMESTICALLY

The Federal Aviation Administration warned it was illegal to destroy government property and that a wounded unmanned aerial vehicle shot out of the sky could crash land on people.

"We do not want drones in town," said Deer Trail resident Phillip Steel, who drafted the ordinance. "They fly in town, they get shot down."

Steel’s tongue was firmly in his cheek when he first drafted the measure, but his anti-spying sentiment soon caught on with residents and some officials in the enclave of about 550 people some 55 miles east of Denver.

    ok...mapquesting Deer Trail...ok...great...not too complicated...

on the road, heading west, sh!teating grin planted firmly on face, rifle in right hand, left hand on wheel...lost in reverie...seeing headlines: 'East Coast Man Heroically Guns Down Drones'..

still lost in reverie...seeing tshirts labeled "East Coast Killer" with cartooinish Chinaski (small body, comically large head), rifle in tow, blowing equally cartoonish looking drones out of the sky (you see, kids can wear them too, while adults can always claim irony to avoid apparent sartorial blunder)....

Chinaski for mayor? Governor? Congress? Nope, *President*...that's more like it.

ha! I was kind of hoping you might be up to the task Calzy

of course, you'd be running things behind the scenes, like a Dick Cheney-type. and i'll just admit that here...because everyone knows i'm mad - we'd never get the votes!

I have, however, no doubt that our sloganeering and campaign posters would be - although occasionally mildly pornographic - second to none.
