What's that you say Bill, we're all welcome to come down and visit? Maybe stay a month or two, or 30? maybe establish a new little town, Avalon, Equador. Everyone on the bus! Hey you, are you really going to bring that cello?

Were those bugs on the hallucinogenic lillies, Ecuadorian Mosquitos? Did anyone else happen to see them?

Nope -- no mosquitoes at all (anywhere except at the coast).

Wow, those are some pretty bizarre plants! You won't find any native FL plants like that.

I may move to Ecuador one of these days, but first I have to move to Europe. Whenever I settle down, I want it to be in a fairly rural area though. So that's probably when Ecuador comes into play. I love Florida, but good god the mosquitoes are monsters. I bet they'd go toe to toe with African mosquitoes. They'll bite through your clothes.

@RAF - Do you ever watch Vice Guide documentaries? Here's a documentary they made on that drug, very interesting:

It's mainly about how the drug is used to manipulate people.

Hi, All: here are three very nice pictures from Ecuador that I would like to share. The middle photo shows a Brocken Specter (a rare atmospheric phenomenon caused by a long shadow projected onto mist below).

Watched the video and went to check the dictionary for the English idiom - to 'Test the water'

    Found this quick quiz:

Someone who tests the water.. is being:

    a. careful
    b. careless
    c. carefree
    d. mounteneer who wants to change vocation

Laughing aside, a very good mutual cooperation between a man who try to drown his jeep at all cost and a 4 wheel lady who is not having it

Now, with all seriousness, A beautiful river you have there, Bill, apparently what kept you up was the many who tried this before and paved your way to the surface...

Just hope everything worked out okay with the lawsuit filed by the salmons for a very surprising invasion and by the toads for an attempt to imitate an amphibian life style by a metal creature their request for exclusivity now has been granted

Thanks for the smiles : )

Two questions Bill, is the awesome bird in the picture a few links up a woodpecker?
I am trying to find it online.
And can you explain the guy with the rope?
Is it to recover your body if the car doesn't make it?

Yes, a woodpecker. I think he's this guy (not my photo!):

    He's a Crimson-Mantled Woodpecker, on this page:

    http://www.pbase.com/ahlman/woodpeckers

Of course, he doesn't know he's a Crimson-Mantled Woodpecker. That's just our label for him. (I wonder what he calls us?)

The backrope on Pandora was so that if she got swept downstream (or got stuck on a large submerged rock!) we'd have a way to winch her out.

Exploring a river canyon yesterday. In a rare accident, I slipped and bruised a rib, but it doesn't seem broken. The river goes quite a long way up the valley until it emerges on a high plateau. We turned round when it started to rain and thunder, aware of the possibility of a flash flood. More exploration to come.

In my neck of the woods, we call what you're doing in that photo Bill, "RIVER WALKING". Some of us do that in our fly fishing boots and others just don an old pair of sport shoes with enough traction on their soles to prevent slippage. That section that you're walking through in the photo though would call for 2 walking sticks to navigate it... that's for sure!

Well we mightn't all belong to the same species, and it might depend on what we're doing; on that pic, Bill, you might be a brown-crested orange-mantled whitefaced kingfisher or something

    Hey Bill,

Just an advice: Stay out of canyons during rainy seasons, even if the sky is clear.

I've personally seen flash floods happening without any sign of rain or thunder. Sometimes it's raining a hundred kilometers or more up river, so you only notice the flood when it's dangerously close already...If you're at the bottom of a canyon, the water level can raise several meters in a matter of seconds.

I've seen flash floods happening under a completely blue sky more than a couple of times during summer...It's terrifying.

I know you are a very experienced mountaineer, but sometimes, when you hear the thunder and feel the wind it's already too late. Many people loose their lives here in Brazil every year in flash floods. Sometimes it gives no warning.

    Raf.
