The greatest natural catastrophe of the century.
911 was surely a terrible event but so many people seem to forget the Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami that happened in 2004. I remember being absolutely mortified at the death of so many people. I had heard that parts of Malaysia were effected and I was worried about whether my two half Malay sisters were safe and my dad who was a flight engineer (who flew in Asia) was safe. Of course they turned out to be well. But 230,000 people in 14 countries were not.
But it wasn't just the earthquake and the Tsunami that caused suffering and death, it was the loss of homes, the destruction of infrastructure, food and water supplies and the spread of infectious disease.
What I felt most after this event, was a deep and painful sorrow for all those who had suffered. Once again ghosts visited our house and lingered around the female crossroads that I have mentioned before. Later I heard stories about the ghosts that haunted the beaches where they died - crying for their loved ones.
I believe this was a natural event and see no reason why it won't happen again.
For me the lasting feeling is this :
We are all connected. When large numbers of human beings suffer, I cannot be untouched. The death of 230,000 people continues to touch me deeply and I still feel for those who died or were injured and all those who lost someone they love.
I think it is only by feeling the suffering of others that we can truly embrace that we are ONE indivisible people living on EARTH.
Suffering is THE TEACHER that matters the most. And we should never let an opportunity to learn and to grow pass us by. Seeing through the eye of the heart, opens the heart and reminds us that despite our differences, we are ONE.
