went looking for at least one of my copies of Grace Jones Nightclubbing, to play that song. could not find it, ended up playing (on LP, as is only proper):

    Edit:

Kate is nicely twisted. At the end of the record, when the stylus sits in the 'run out' groove, it makes the sound of an old rotary dial telephone. The sound the dial makes when it goes/spins back to it's starting position. So, at the end of the record, it sits there and constantly dials, but gets no connection.

So, WhiteFeather, I see your Todd Boston quartet, and raise you a, ... well it's another Todd Boston quartet.

On fretless bass is Michael Manring, whom I've been lucky enough to see live (with Michael Hedges.) It was Michael Manring's CD, "Thonk" that was the background music for my drive from Duluth to Rochester, MN, following the ambulance my wife was in, being taken to the Mayo Clinic for brain surgery. I had held up well through the emotions of the previous day - a day that had included her first emergency brain surgery in Duluth, but something in one of the Michael Manring songs reached deep inside of me and broke me down. By the time the song was over, I was crying so hard I could hardly see the road.

That memory just popped into my head while listening to this. (BTW, she's fine now.) :~)

I often measure the talent of a band on stage with live vids by the audience response.

    Seen 'em live in '85.

The gig was so "hi-fi"... i thought "everything must come from tape". Who knows.

Unfortunately, it was also one of the most boring concerts i ever attended.

A couple of years prior to this, i saw Nina H's ex-band with their "Spliff Radio Show" - more lo-fi, and, pretty exciting (at that time).

btw, this sums up the contemporary me:

The studio cd was a favorite of mine at the time ... never saw them live.

What I liked about the live vid posted here (and now) was the female vocalist toward the end of the song.

That wasn't part of the studio version.

I note that the response to "Sly'n'Robbie" (da riddum twins) who played on the Grace Jones album, is another album where the producer spent over one month on the bass track alone, to perfect the driving beat of that song. sly and Robbie can pull that off, live, all day long. it is that drive, that beat, which is what gives the song it's depth of grabbing people.

Eg, Sly & Robbie, doing what they do so well:

Then of course, again, one of my favorite examples of this sort of thing, when Bootsy Collins lays it down. If you imagine his killah skillz being part of the Billie Jean song, you can see how it would probably be at least as perfect as the original:

i could go on and bring in all the other connecting tissue, but I'll cut to the chase (things like Bugaloo Joe Jones, and then how funk came out of R&B..and more ) ....Which is why my favorite kind of music, as rare as it is, combines all of this sort of stuff into one. Trance ambient acid Funk reggae dub.

You can see that overall influence in modern music, as it shifts and changes. Late 90's to '00's influences here, and here for example. But, many a book has been written about such things, no need to repeat such here. it gets to the core of the monkey beat in each of us, as you might imagine that last link, the Leftfield song, for example, would be effective in a Jurassic park 'flight scene' as people are being chased by large dinosaurs..or an extended car chase scene. It appeals to the parts of us that desire excitement and find ourselves most alive in those moments.

you might say that we are combining the ideals or projections that stand within tantric sex and illumination ( all the way to ancient dance and ritual gatherings) via that channel... with the more esoteric/sexless ideologies of illumination. To ground the human in all ways, as illumination appears on the scene. This was noted and illustrated quite nicely in the film Baraka, for example. All the myriad ways, combining with one another.

Which Brings you to groups like DCD. Dead can Dance - their very Raison d'être, seemingly...to combine it all into one.
