DC insurance commissioner fired for criticizing Obamacare fix

Last week, President Barack Obama announced a change to his signature health care law to allow people to keep their health insurance plans that do not meet the Affordable Care Act's new standards. Critics argue that this "fix" to Obamacare means that fewer people will purchase health insurance through the state or federal exchanges, which could cause prices to go up.

One of the critics is Washington, DC Insurance Commissioner William P. White. However, when White released a statement criticizing the president's fix, he was fired by Mayor Vincent Gray.

    Published on Nov 19, 2013

Clinton, despite having supported Obama's Affordable Care Act (ACA), said in a November 12 interview that the federal government should not use minor changes in existing plans as an excuse to cancel existing healthcare plans. "I personally believe, even if it takes a change in the law, the President should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got."

Doctors Raise Red Flag: Young Children Should Avoid Using Tablets

ROSEDALE, Md. (WJZ) — Tablets and toddlers: A warning for parents of tech-savvy children. The American Academy of Pediatrics says children under two should avoid all screen time.

Jessica Kartalija reports doctors and therapists fear too much time on touchscreens could cause long-term damage.

Playtime for babies is far different in the 21st century. But parents could be making a big mistake putting touchscreens in the hands of toddlers and young children.

Parents think they’re educating and stimulating their kids, but doctors and therapists are raising a red flag — too much screen time can hurt their developing bodies.

“If they are always on the iPad and not actually doing those paper pencil activities that they should still be doing, those muscles are going to remain weaker,”
said occupational therapist Lindsay Marzoli, Learning and Therapy Corner.

Like most 6-year-olds, Nolan Ulrich loves playing on his family’s iPad in their Rosedale home. His mom limits his screen time, but still worries about how much is too much, especially knowing it can lead to muscle weakness.

“Is it OK for them to be constantly looking at something for 20 or 30 minutes straight?” said Tammie Ulrich. “I did not know this would be a part of our parenting and our teaching.”

Kartalija: “What does this work on?”

Nolan: “My finger and hand movements.”

This game looks like fun, but it’s actually part of Nolan’s occupational therapy. He’s working on hand-eye coordination and finger movements like grasping and pinching, as well as balance and posture — all problems kids can develop if they spend too much time with touchscreens, instead of running, jumping, building and drawing.

Kartalija: “This isn’t just about the fine motor, it’s about their body as well.”
Marzoli: “What we’re seeing is a lot of children coming in with some motor delays, some decreased muscle strength in areas.”

Therapists are seeing more kids like Nolan. A just-released survey on tablets and toddlers shows the number of kids using touchscreens has doubled in the past two years — almost 40 percent of babies under two and nearly 75 percent of kids under eight are using them.

“They tap and something happens. So they tap and wow! Something happens there. And that’s very enticing,” said Dr. Timothy Doran, a pediatrician at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

What does this mean for generations to come? The technology is so new, researchers can’t predict what damage may be done. That has doctors very concerned.

“Unlimited use, three-four hours of iPad use on their own — where the parents aren’t involved — seems to me that you are flirting with developmental danger,” Doran said.

It’s a warning Nolan’s family takes to heart.

“Sometimes we set a timer now,” he said.

Trying to limit too much swiping and tapping that could change how an entire generation is developing.

Therapists say you can find plenty of worthwhile educational apps for children, but suggest limiting touchscreen use to no more than 15 minutes at a time.

Internal TSA Documents: Body Scanners, Pat Downs Not For Terrorists
    [complete article here]

“...The TSA has quietly admitted there is no actual “threat-addressing” basis for employing nude body scanners or invasive pat down procedures at airports, a notion many travelers who are weary of the federal agency’s borderline sexual molestation have long suspected but were hard-pressed to prove.

“The TSA understands body scanners and pat downs are ineffective at addressing a threat for which they admit “there is no evidence.”

The evidence was found in sealed court documents , available through the PACER.gov website, regarding engineer and blogger Jon Corbett’s ongoing litigation over the constitutionality of the agency’s loathsome security practices…”

“...But in a sealed version of the same documents, which were inexplicably uploaded to and found through PACER.gov (and available here), the redacted sections appear with incriminating clarity.”

Through Redactions, TSA Admits Terror Threats are Slim to Nonexistent

A section detailing how “The TSA Has Misled The Public As to the Likelihood of the Threat ‘Addressed’ By Nude Body Scanners and Pat Downs,” includes a blacked out portion concerning the TSA’s knowledge that “explosives on airplanes are extremely rare.”

“For example, the TSA analyzed hijackings in 2007 and found 7 hijacking incidents across the globe, but none of them involved actual explosive devices,” Corbett explains in the brief, adding that the last attempt to bring an explosive on-board an airplane through a U.S. airport occurred 35 years ago.

Another redacted section highlights the government’s concession that, “due to hardened cockpit doors and the willingness of passengers to challenge hijackers,” it would be difficult to have a repeat of 9/11.

“The government also credits updated pre-flight security for that difficulty assessment,” the brief states, “but the assessment was written before the en masse deployment of body scanners and before the update to the pat down procedure. Further, the government admits that there have been no attempted domestic hijackings of any kind in the 12 years since 9/11.”

The TSA also wanted the following section completely censored:

This begs the question, then, of what evidence the government possesses to rationalize that we should be so afraid of non-metallic explosives being brought aboard flights departing from the U.S. that we must sacrifice our civil liberties. The answer: there is none. “As of mid-2011, terrorist threat groups present in the Homeland are not known to be actively plotting against civil aviation targets or airports; instead, their focus is on fundraising, recruiting, and propagandizing.”…”

Get the TSA Out of Our Pants

“...The information contained within the redacted portions support what Infowars and others have long suspected: that the sprawling agency – which is in the process of extending beyond the airport and onto highways, train stations and public buses – was never meant to thwart terrorists, but was instead set up to purposely obstruct, annoy, harass and train the American public.

In other words, the court documents go a long way in proving the TSA is pure contrived security theater tailor-made solely to indoctrinate Americans, through prisoner training, into blindly accepting obedience to authority as a normal way of life, not to mention it’s a huge waste of about $7.91 billion in taxpayer money a year...”

    US Democratic Republic Destroyed

NOTE: The Forbes article referenced by Lt. Col. Roy Potter included below.

    Published on Nov 20, 2013

I bring up the Forbes article referring to Obama's actions (although this has been going on for decades) that have destroyed our Republic.

Obama's Disdain For The Constitution Means We Risk Losing Our Republic

    By M. Northrop Buechner

Since President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, he has changed it five times. Most notably, he suspended the employer mandate last summer. This is widely known, but almost no one seems to have grasped its significance.

The Constitution authorizes the President to propose and veto legislation. It does not authorize him to change existing laws. The changes Mr. Obama ordered in Obamacare, therefore, are unconstitutional. This means that he does not accept some of the limitations that the Constitution places on his actions. We cannot know at this point what limitations, if any, he does accept.

By changing the law based solely on his wish, Mr. Obama acted on the principle that the President can rewrite laws and—since this is a principle—not just this law, but any law. After the crash of Obamacare, many Congressmen have implored the President to change the individual mandate the same way he had changed the employer mandate, that is, to violate the Constitution again.

The main responsibility the Constitution assigns to the President is to faithfully execute the Laws. If the President rejects this job, if instead he decides he can change or ignore laws he does not like, then what?

The time will come when Congress passes a law and the President ignores it. Or he may choose to enforce some parts and ignore others (as Mr. Obama is doing now). Or he may not wait for Congress and issue a decree (something Mr. Obama has done and has threatened to do again).

Mr. Obama has not been shy about pointing out his path. He has repeatedly made clear that he intends to act on his own authority. “I have the power and I will use it in defense of the middle class,” he has said. “We’re going to do everything we can, wherever we can, with or without Congress.” There are a number of names for the system Mr. Obama envisions, but representative government is not one of them.

If the President can ignore the laws passed by Congress, of what use is Congress? The President can do whatever he chooses. Congress can stand by and observe. Perhaps they might applaud or jeer. But in terms of political power, Congress will be irrelevant. Probably, it will become a kind of rubber-stamp or debating society. There are many such faux congresses in tyrannies throughout history and around the globe.

Mr. Obama has equal contempt for the Supreme Court. In an act of overbearing hubris, he excoriated Supreme Court Justices sitting helplessly before him during the 2010 State of the Union address—Justices who had not expected to be denounced and who were prevented by the occasion from defending themselves. Mr. Obama condemned them for restoring freedom of speech to corporations and unions.

Ignoring two centuries of practice, President Obama made four recess appointments in January 2012, when the Senate was not in recess. Three courts have found that his appointments were unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case. If the Supreme Court finds against him, what will Mr. Obama do?

We can get a hint by looking at how other parts of his Administration have dealt with Court decisions they did not like.

The Attorney General’s Office is the branch of government charged with enforcing federal laws. After the Supreme Court struck down the key provision of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Attorney General Holder announced that he would use other provisions of the act to get around the Court’s decision.

The Supreme Court has defined the standard for sexual harassment as “severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive” behavior to a “reasonable person.” In open defiance of that ruling, the Obama Department of Education has declared a new definition of sexual harassment for colleges, that is, “any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature,” including “verbal conduct,” even if it is not objectively offensive—thus reinforcing the reign of terror over sex on college campuses. If a young man’s request for a date turns out to be unwelcome, he is guilty of sexual harassment by definition.

The lack of respect for the Supreme Court by the Obama administration is manifest. They feel bound by the Court’s decisions only if they agree with them. If they disagree, it is deuces wild; they will embrace any fiction that nullifies the Court’s decision.

The direction in which Mr. Obama is taking us would make possible the following scenario. A Republican Congress is elected and repeals Obamacare over a Democratic President’s veto. The President refuses to enforce the repeal. The Supreme Court rules that the President’s refusal is unconstitutional. The President denounces that ruling and refuses to be bound by it.

If the President persists in rejecting all authority other than his own, the denouement would depend on the side taken by the Armed Forces. Whatever side that was, our national self-esteem would be unlikely to recover from the blow of finding that we are living in a banana republic.

The shocking fact is that our whole system of representative government depends on it being led by an individual who believes in it; who thinks it is valuable; who believes that a government dedicated to the protection of individual rights is a noble ideal. What if he does not?

Mr. Obama is moving our government away from its traditional system of checks and balances and toward the one-man-rule that dominates third world countries. He has said that he wants a fair country—implying that, as it stands, the United States is not a fair country—an unprecedented calumny committed against a country by its own leader.

What country does he think is more fair than the United States? He has three long years left in which to turn us into a fair country. Where does he intend to take us?

Mr. Obama got his conception of a fair country from his teachers. A fair country is an unfree country because it is regimented to prevent anyone from rising too high. Their ideal is egalitarianism, the notion that no one should be any better, higher, or richer than anyone else. Combined with a dollop of totalitarianism, egalitarianism has replaced communism as the dominant ideal in our most prestigious universities. Mr. Obama and his colleagues are the product of those universities, and they have their marching orders.

The most important point is that Mr. Obama does not consider himself bound by the Constitution. He could not have made that more clear. He has drawn a line in the concrete and we cannot ignore it.

Those who currently hold political office, and who want to keep our system of government, need to act now. Surely, rejection of the Constitution is grounds for impeachment and charges should be filed. In addition, there are many other actions that Congressmen can and should take—actions that will tell Mr. Obama that we have seen where he is going and we will not let our country go without a fight.

At the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked what form of government had been created. “A republic,” he replied, “if you can keep it.”

We are losing it. If Mr. Obama’s reach for unprecedented power is not stopped, that will be the end. Everyone who values his life and liberty should find some way to say “No!” “Not now!” “Not yet!” “Not ever!”

I wish I could watch these Paula. They look fun and interesting but we have limited internet so unless I get up between 2 am and 6 am, which I actually do on occasion, I will have to wait. I appreciate you posting them though. Maybe I can sneak a few in next week when we re-up on our monthly allotment. I know it would take an awful lot to get me to fly in an airplane these days. It just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

    Hi risveglio,

Or maybe he feared the same ending as Lincoln.

Or America is Amerika. Or money's where's it's at. Ka-ching!

I'm not a fan of the Gettysburg Address because I had to memorize it in the 7th grade:

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…"

That's all I remember. Humm, never thought about what the words mean. I parroted them back for a test grade.

    bwahaha!!!
