Default The cursed pits of Tofta, Sweden - a freak of nature!?

"Svärjarehålorna" / The cursed pits, is a collection of pits or patches in Tofta at the Swedish countryside, where any vegetation refuse to grow.

According to Swedish folklore, two farmers once stood here and argued over who owned the land. One of them had taken some soil from home and put into his wooden clogs whereby he swore he was standing on his own soil. But it was a false and deceiving oath he swore, thus he recieved immediate punishment that slowly made him sink into the ground after he had jumped sideways a few times. Supposedly this is how the pits came to be. The tale as well as the pits are at least several hundred years old, and no vegetation has ever grown in them since. The pits are right next to the road and in the winter they're covered with snow.

In 1745 a man named Pehr Lovén wrote an academic dissertation named "De Gothungia", it was in latin and dealt with his local countryside. In his work he explained the story of the cursed pits, and also stated that the cursed pits were very old, even at that time.

Another tale describes how a jury of twelve reputable men could reach authority to condemn or condone a felon by standing faced towards the nearest church while announcing their plea. Supposedly an innocent man was falsely accused and plead guilty for a crime he did not commit, thus the footprints of the jury caused the cursed pits to forever mark his innocence and the wrongdoing of which he was a victim.

The actual number of pits acknowledged throughout history varies between 12, 16, 20 and 24 depending on the source.

No matter how weird or funny all of this seems, the fact remains, the unfertile pits really exist and has done so for a very long time.

    The coordinates for the location are: (WGS84) N56 17.549 E13 46.693

People have tried all known methods to make something grow in the pits but no one has ever succeded. Soil samples have been analyzed by a agricultural laboratory, they found the soil to be ordinary soil in good health, no discrepancies what so ever. As an ultimate test they put the remaining soil sample in a jar and planted some seeds, wich grew with an astonishing force. It seem that there's something at the location of the pits itself that disables the fertility of the soil.

    Results from the soil analysis:
    pH 5.9
    Phosfor (AL) 1.6 mg/100 g
    Potassium (AL) 4.8 mg/100 g
    Magnesium 2.3 mg/100 g
    Calcium (AL) 17 mg/100 g
    Cadmium (HNO 3) 0.12 mg/kg ts
    Lead (HNO 3) 12 mg/kg ts
    Chrome (HNO 3) 3.5 mg/kg ts
    Nickel (HNO 3) 2.0 mg/kg ts
    Copper (HNO 3) 2.6 mg/kg ts
    Zinc (HNO 3) 21 mg/kg ts
    Chloride

Fascinating. I wonder if anyone has measured EM or other radiation. I also wonder if there is a sketch of the holes so that the geometry can be looked at. All I can find via Google is this photo on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/movitz/1433464242/

EM and radiation tests has been carried out as well and nothing out of the ordinary was detected. I have yet to find the links for those references. I don't have any info on the geometry of the pits, but i strongly consider going out there to collect some more data if possible.

    Update with some new data.

Folklore bring different tales explaining this mystery, but what is the scientific answer to this phenomena?

If you've ever encountered anything similar, have psychic abilities, or have a scientific understanding of the actual process causing the pits, please share your story!

The English captions for the first video are very ..er..interesting.

My best guess is gaseous emissions from below. Something low level and quite noxious (toxic).

The soil is about 8km from a ley line, which is considered to be, from my estimations, well within the effects zone.

To find the relevant posts, look for references about radon gas and ley lines, on this forum.

for ley lines, use (download and install) Google earth and the 'vortex maps' kmz file addition for Google earth.

The line runs straight, through Broby and Strömsnäsbruk.

Where both towns probably have weird occurrences and strange energies happening all the time.

Other clues can be found via the reading of the works of Charles Fort, which deal with such phenomena, in the hundreds of cases.

I recently linked to a pdf file of his complete works, in a thread, recently, here on the forum. searching for 'Charles Fort' should take you to the relevant thread.

Carmody, thank you for your valuable input, I will study your clues. Very interesting indeed, eventually I hope to find some hard science that really explains the true reason for the pits to have existed for such a long time at fixed spots with such outstanding durability.

Of course, i've heard of ley lines, and their importance is probably anything else than insignificant. Still, my knowledge about ley lines is very thin, and I need to build myself a base of knowledge on that subject.

If anyone feel inclined to share confirmed and effective scientific knowledge about ley lines, up front, then i'm very interested to absorb that knowledge. Even stories, legends and loosley established information could be of interest, but that is a secondary priority.

The first video in the OP is the work of a local newspaper reporter at "Norra Skåne" Bertil Nilsson and his cameraman Fredrik Thunberg. Bertil explains what he knows on the matter and the legends involved. Basically, Bertil's information is covered in my posts on this thread, especially by my video in post #5.

Anyway, Carmody I take your hint about the English subtitle seriously and when i find a good opportunity, I will make an effort to produce English subtitles for Bertil's video in the OP. Bertil's video is well worth the English subtitle and i should have realized this at the time i posted it. My apologies.

For convenience, here are the books suggested by Carmody:

    My observation:
The pits look like a holes left by removing fence poles. Or they might be located in nodes of some natural acoustic standing wave. Thous removal of the surplus soil through modal phenomenon...

I come from a ley line area. I may have seen similar phenomena beforehand.

Since nobody mentioned it,i would like to bring to your attention Fairy circles in Namibia desert.

They are much bigger than those in Sweden and nothing grows there too...
