2014 is upon us. For a person who graduated from Georgia Tech in 1961, a year in which the class ring showed the same date right side up or upside down, the 21st century was a science fiction concept associated with Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.” To us George Orwell’s 1984 seemed so far in the future we would never get there. Now it is 30 years in the past.

Did we get there in Orwell’s sense? In terms of surveillance technology, we are far beyond Orwell’s imagination. In terms of the unaccountability of government, we exceptional and indispensable people now live a 1984 existence. In his alternative to the Queen’s Christmas speech, Edward Snowden made the point that a person born in the 21st century will never experience privacy. For new generations the word privacy will refer to something mythical, like a unicorn.

Many Americans might never notice or care. I remember when telephone calls were considered to be private. In the 1940s and 1950s the telephone company could not always provide private lines. There were “party lines” in which two or more customers shared the same telephone line. It was considered extremely rude and inappropriate to listen in on someone’s calls and to monopolize the line with long duration conversations.

The privacy of telephone conversations was also epitomized by telephone booths, which stood on street corners, in a variety of public places, and in “filling stations” where an attendant would pump gasoline into your car’s fuel tank, check the water in the radiator, the oil in the engine, the air in the tires, and clean the windshield. A dollar’s worth would purchase 3 gallons, and $5 would fill the tank.

Even in the 1980s and for part of the 1990s there were lines of telephones on airport waiting room walls, each separated from the other by sound absorbing panels. Whether the panels absorbed the sounds of the conversation or not, they conveyed the idea that calls were private.

The notion that telephone calls are private left Americans’ consciousness prior to the NSA listening in. If memory serves, it was sometime in the 1990s when I entered the men’s room of an airport and observed a row of men speaking on their cell phones in the midst of the tinkling sound of urine hitting water and noises of flushing toilets. The thought hit hard that privacy had lost its value.

I remember when I arrived at Merton College, Oxford, for the first term of 1964. I was advised never to telephone anyone whom I had not met, as it would be an affront to invade the privacy of a person to whom I was unknown. The telephone was reserved for friends and acquaintances, a civility that contrasts with American telemarketing.

The efficiency of the Royal Mail service protected the privacy of the telephone. What one did in those days in England was to write a letter requesting a meeting or an appointment. It was possible to send a letter via the Royal Mail to London in the morning and to receive a reply in the afternoon. Previously it had been possible to send a letter in the morning and to receive a morning reply, and to send another in the afternoon and receive an afternoon reply.

When one flies today, unless one stops up one’s ears with something, one hears one’s seat mate’s conversations prior to takeoff and immediately upon landing. Literally, everyone is talking nonstop. One wonders how the economy functioned at such a high level of incomes and success prior to cell phones. I can remember being able to travel both domestically and internationally on important business without having to telephone anyone. What has happened to America that no one can any longer go anywhere without constant talking?

If you sit at an airport gate awaiting a flight, you might think you are listening to a porn film. The overhead visuals are usually Fox “News” going on about the need for a new war, but the cell phone audio might be young women describing their latest sexual affair.

Americans, or many of them, are such exhibitionists that they do not mind being spied upon or recorded. It gives them importance. According to Wikipedia, Paris Hilton, a multimillionaire heiress, posted her sexual escapades online, and Facebook had to block users from posting nude photos of themselves. Sometime between my time and now people ceased to read 1984. They have no conception that a loss of privacy is a loss of self. They don’t understand that a loss of privacy means that they can be intimidated, blackmailed, framed, and viewed in the buff. Little wonder they submitted to porno-scanners.

The loss of privacy is a serious matter. The privacy of the family used to be paramount. Today it is routinely invaded by neighbors, police, Child Protective Services (sic), school administrators, and just about anyone else.

Consider this: A mother of six and nine year old kids sat in a lawn chair next to her house watching her kids ride scooters in the driveway and cul-de-sac on which they live.

Normally, this would be an idyllic picture. But not in America. A neighbor, who apparently did not see the watching mother, called the police to report that two young children were outside playing without adult supervision. Note that the next door neighbor, a woman, did not bother to go next door to speak with the mother of the children and express her concern that they children were not being monitored while they played. “We’re here for you,” the cops told the mother, who was carried off in handcuffs and spent the next 18 hours in a cell in prison clothes.

The news report doesn’t say what happened to the children, whether the father appeared and insisted on custody of his offspring or whether the cops turned the kids over to Child Protective Services.

This shows you what Americans are really like. Neither the neighbor nor the police had a lick of sense. The only idea that they had was to punish someone. This is why America has the highest incarceration rate and the highest total number of prison inmates in the entire world. Washington can go on and on about “authoritarian” regimes in Russia and China, but both countries have far lower prison populations than “freedom and democracy” America.

I was unaware that laws now exist requiring the supervision of children at play. Children vary in their need for supervision. In my day supervision was up to the mother’s judgment. Older children were often tasked with supervising the younger. It was one way that children were taught responsibility and developed their own judgment.

When I was five years old, I walked to the neighborhood school by myself. Today my mother would be arrested for child endangerment.

In America punishment falls more heavily on the innocent, the young, and the poor than it does on the banksters who are living on the Federal Reserve’s subsidy known as Quantitative Easing and who have escaped criminal liability for the fraudulent financial instruments that they sold to the world. Single mothers, depressed by the lack of commitment of the fathers of their children, are locked away for using drugs to block out their depression. Their children are seized by a Gestapo institution, Child Protective Services, and end up in foster care where many are abused.

According to numerous press reports, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 year-old children who play cowboys and indians or cops and robbers during recess and raise a pointed finger while saying “bang-bang” are arrested and carried off to jail in handcuffs as threats to their classmates. In my day every male child and the females who were “Tom boys” would have been taken to jail. Playground fights were normal, but no police were ever called. Handcuffing a child would not have been tolerated.

From the earliest age, boys were taught never to hit a girl. In those days there were no reports of police beating up teenage girls and women or body slamming the elderly. To comprehend the degeneration of the American police into psychopaths and sociopaths, go online and observe the video of Lee Oswald in police custody in 1963.

The embattled city of Detroit is an indication of how the US economy as a whole has been “hijacked” by “capitalist bankers,” American author Dean Henderson tells Press TV.

Early in December, a federal judge ruled that Detroit in the state of Michigan was eligible for bankruptcy in what has become the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history.

US Judge Steven Rhodes said that Detroit, once the cradle of auto industry, was eligible for protection under Chapter 9 of the US bankruptcy code as negotiations with its thousands of creditors were unfeasible. The city is $18.5 billion in debt.

Encouraged by the low price of real estate, dozens of Chinese auto companies and suppliers are opening plants and offices in and around Detroit, where they hope to one day sell cars to US buyers.

“I think the situation is symptomatic of the economy that has been hijacked by parasite capitalist bankers,” Henderson said in a phone interview.

Detroit is only one example of “this real estate bubble” that was created by the Wall Street bankers and led to the collapse of the housing market in 2008, he said.

“This is what happens when you turn the economy over to these people.”

The US economy is not producing to its full capacity and as a result the Chinese are moving in to invest, Henderson explained.

“The whole world economy has been thrown into this casino capitalism where workers are rewarded less, paid less and squeezed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the author noted, there is “this class of billionaire-parasite capitalists” who “give nothing” to the economy but they are “rewarded.”

On Dec. 26, financial analyst and statistician Dr. Jim Willie provided a look at major economic events that will take place and shape the global financial system in 2014. Of the several key changes set to occur in how nations trade amongst one another, the two primary events. that of a currency reset and the implementation of a gold backed trade note, will be the catalyst for China's vision of a de-Americanized financial order.

The next year will feature many powerful new effects. The Indirect Exchange will become a prominent fixture, its channel filled. It will direct many $billions in USTreasury Bonds from large scale asset acquisitions by Eastern and BRICS players, sent back to New York and London. The payments for the asset purchases will be done in USTBonds, as the Eastern entities dump them as fast as they can before the great devaluation.

But the biggest shock waves will come from the currency reset followed by the introduction of the Gold Trade Settlement. At least 23 nations have already prepared for a new trade system that will occur outside the dollar and Swift systems. Through their moves away from reliance on the dollar via the creation of new currency swap lines, major economic powers are transitioning away from the 42 year old petro-dollar system that saw America devalue its currency nearly 98%, and export inflation to the rest of the world.

A global currency reset is inevitable, especially when you consider that the historic life cycle of a purely fiat currency is only 30 years, with a maximum length of 42 years. This falls in line with the U.S. dollar which has been a purely fiat currency since President Nixon took America off the gold standard in 1971, and subsequently allowed the central bank to grow the economy with debt rather than sound money and real production.

On Aug. 5, an official from the People's Bank of China (PBoC), published an article in a leading Chinese market journal suggesting that now would be a good time to convene a new 'Bretton Woods' conference with the intention of creating and implementing a new gold backed reserve currency to replace the dying dollar.

Yao Yudong of the PBoC's monetary policy committee has called for a new Bretton Woods system to strengthen the management of global liquidity. In an article in the China Securities Journal, Yao called for more power to the IMF as international cooperation and supervision are needed. - Zerohedge
Last September, China made an initial move against the dollar when it created a new oil wholesaling structure which would allow countries to buy and sell the commodity in currencies other than the petrodollar. This policy was the first in over 40 years that challenged dollar hegemony, and in that time, it has opened the door for many more trade agreements across Asia that bypass the dollar and current reserve currency.

Other regions outside Asia are also recognizing the rise of the Chinese currency in international transactions at the same time many nations seek to divest themselves of dollar reserves. In March of this year, the Bank of England became the first primary central bank to allow currency swaps of the Chinese Yuan, ahead of states such as France and Switzerland who are in negotiations to do the same. All this, at a time when Yuan denominated bonds have increased 171 times worldwide since the credit crisis of 2008, and global trade in the Yuan has gone from 0% to 12% in just five years.

The average life-cycle of a strictly fiat currency throughout history is just 30 years, with a ceiling period of around 42 years. As of 2013, the dollar has reached that threshold since it was adopted in its current form in 1971, and in those 42 years of global dominance, destructive monetary polices by the central bank are quickly bringing its worldwide acceptance to an end. And with the Federal Reserve's ongoing QE programs that promote money printing over resolving the enormous debt issues still hampering the U.S. economy, China appears ready to implement its next move in dethroning king dollar, by calling for a new Bretton Woods conference that would favor their currency to be the next world reserve.

For several years, financial analysts, primarily those outside the mainstream of academia, have been warning that any day could be the black swan event that collapses the dollar, and ends U.S. hegemony as caretaker of the world's reserve currency. That day has finally arrived as on Nov. 18, a former head trader for a major financial institution issued a harbinger and stated that 23 countries, and 60% of the world's GDP, are right now setting up new swap lines which bypass the dollar, SWIFT, and the BIS, and will usher in a new global currency system which will kill the dollar.

The thoughts that are put into the minds of men that are aware of what is occurring on trading floors all over the world is when? When is also the question that I get asked about quite often by thousands of people. So what is the “when”? The “when” is what is the sure sign that this fraudulent sham that we call an economy is over? Folks the biggest sign is when those that trade in the dollar to acquire goods, no longer want the worthless paper because of US “bully” policies or they have totally lost faith in the US as a responsible steward of it’s currency and economy. That day has arrived.

The list of the 23 countries which are creating new swap lines outside of the dollar include China, Russia, India, and surprisingly, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. This means that the Eurozone itself is abandoning the dollar, and preparing for transition to a new central banking system.

To facilitate the transfer of currencies and swap lines, there needs to be a bank of sufficient size and stature to aid in handling of this monumental task. One year ago, China, along with the BRICs nations of Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa, loaned money to a new financial institution they established and labeled the BRICs bank. This bank was created with the intention of bypassing the dollar, and allowing free trade to occur between nations without the need to trade for dollars first, as is currently the format under the petrodollar system. In fact, the new BRICs bank will function both as a bank of international settlement, as well as a lender of last resort, eliminating the need for the BIS and IMF, which currently reside under dollar dominion.

The only thing that stands in the way of the world's final rejection of the dollar is the wavering trust that Saudi Arabia and OPEC have with the U.S. in assuring oil transactions remain denominated in dollars under the 1970's Petrodollar agreement. But as the world has seen recently, even the Saudi kingdom is hedging towards a new global system, and has publicly stated that their ties to the U.S. are open for re-negotiation.

What started in September of last year, when an agreement between China and Russia ended the dollar's stranglehold over oil and how it was purchased, the past 14 months have seen a momentous rush towards setting up the infrastructure to replace the dollar completely in global transactions. And with 23 countries, including those from the BRICS nations and the Eurozone, preparing for new swap lines outside of dollar hegemony, the fuse has been lit on the dollar's death rattle, and the when has changed into the now.

I was happy to read your recent comments on Snowden -- it's in line with what I've been thinking about him. From the reading I've done, I tend to believe that the reports of the military/patriot Alliance organizing against the cabal are true. I think Snowden is a part of the Alliance. The fact that he started downloading NSA documents from his time at Dell, prior to Booz Allen Hamilton, tells me that the guy isn't the ordinary, regular ol' concerned American that he's made out to be in the media -- he's part of a much greater, planned resistance operation. The fact that he found asylum in Russia is even more interesting, and IMO, lends credence to the theory that the Alliance put roots in Russia. I'll touch on the importance of this later in my post.

I'm curious what your take is on the Iran situation. Why the sudden shift in policy, which essentially backpedals on 30 years of fear-mongering? It's odd that we seemed to be firmly in the Zionists' back pocket, when all of a sudden, we start negotiating with Iran, AIPAC is trying to buy congressional support for Iranian sanctions, and Obama is threatening to veto any such bill.

Is Israel's outrage real or is this just another finely orchestrated act in the great play?

This is a huge part of the puzzle, IMO. If this situation is genuine -- then there is indeed a power struggle at the top level, and Obama's position becomes quite a bit more complex than "genocidal, maniacal illegal alien communist."

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not pro-Obama by any means. He's clearly a puppet, and the plot goes far beyond him. But when people focus on Obama, and play up the "MUSLIM COMMIE" bit to fan the flames of jingoistic rage and paranoia (ex: Jim Garrow), I start to wonder if I'm being misled.

Same deal with the fear-mongering about Russian and Chinese troops on American soil to enforce the cabal-engineered genocide. IMO, I'm being told to fear these countries for one of two reasons:

1) They are legitimately part of the cabal plot for genocide. All developments, all signs of disagreement, power struggle, etc., on the international stage are a decoy. All players are working together, know of the plot and intend to carry it out. Implication: insiders are honest-to-goodness harbingers of the truth.

2) They oppose the cabal/zionist regime and are an actual threat to the power structure. Developments on the international stage reflect that disagreement and power struggle. Implication: insiders are spreading disinformation and fear to maintain the cabal power structure.

Any comments? Of course, this is most likely a gross-simplification of the actual situation, but my thinking is that the truth is between one of those two polar extremes. And I'm not by any means suggesting we let our guard down, since a beast is most dangerous when it's cornered.

I'm just trying to keep an open mind and figure how everyone plays into this, especially due to recent international developments.

I do not have any direct information on some of the specifics as much of it happened after my sources began to vanish. I would only speculate that everyone is in survival mode and this is when everyone is seeing what hand they were dealt and playing accordingly. It is a time of covering their own rear's and doing what they do best... Turning on each other and positioning themselves for the best deals they can get when the time comes. I wish I had more. I do not want to speculate on anything specific as I would just be adding to the problem out here on the Internet of mass dis-info right now.

Most of the CABAL alliances have always been out of convenience or blackmail. When the blackmail material changes hands or an alliance is no longer convenient things tend to fall apart and get very ugly on their level of operation... IMHO.

Gerald Celente's assessment of the situation is largely accurate.

"The Year of Extremes" = the year of disequilibrium and instability.

Until the human collective is uplifted beyond its current level of consciousness, the situation on the planet will continue to deteriorate.

I did not listen to Gerald Celente's 2014 predictions/trends. I did for 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2010.
It is good enough to hear his prediction for one year to understand what is coming in all the coming years.
Although I agree with the tone. He missed most of them.
Gerald Celente recycles his predictions year to year. He was innovative in 2008, since then he is replicated by many followers.

Well, she is right about several things. We ALL support the corrupt system in one form or another, have been complicit with the fraud because we don't want our entitlements and retirements to be devastated, so we continue to support the militaristic colonialism and imperialism which built this country.

So the game continues to it's inevitable outcome and people continue to jockey for position to do damage control and positioning themselves to take advantage and to come out as unscathed as possible.

Until we get to the point that we go to the mirror and admit we are complicit, that we let the Kennedy assassinations and the 9-11's go by and the Wall Street fraud go by un-prosecuted, and we are willing to get off the imperialistic colonialism and debt based currencies, nothing will change.

Until we admit the US is bankrupt, all assets were pledged including us and our labor in perpetuity, and that we own nothing, have no representative government, and are fully indentured slaves no matter where we fall on the economic scale, then we will not choose to change it.

I was told that TWO of the BRICS countries would be involved along with UN Blue Helmets in arresting Cabal Members once it happens, We are no where near this time frame IMHO... Looking back at the events of 2013, it is clear the fascist Zionist forces have been severely battered and purged. If we continue on the offensive, the human species can be finally freed from their murderous slavery in 2014.
The year 2012 ended and the year 2013 started with a purge of Nazi/Zionist elements in the US military. The Bush/Nazi/Zionist faction in the military had been planning to sink 3 US aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf, blame it on Iran and start World War III, according to multiple sources. Instead fascists like David Petraeus, Rear Admiral Charles Gauoette and General Carter Ham were removed as part of a purge of over 200 senior US military officers. The CIA , NSA and other alphabet agencies experienced similar purges of Zionist agents. Fascists like Michael Hayden, Paul Wolfowitz, Michael Chertoff and all the other main architects of the 911, 2001 fascist coup d’etat in the US have now been removed from power.
Also, we can confirm from government sources in Washington that underground bunkers the elite had prepared to hide in during their planned World War III have either been seized or destroyed.
Then in Rome in February and March, Nazi Pope Maledict was told to either resign or be killed, paving the way for the genuine Christian Pope Francis to start cleaning up the Catholic Church. Francis has now removed Vatican secret power broker Cardinal Tarcision Bertone, paving the way for
the Vatican bank and the Catholic Church to refocus their energies from creating a fascist world government to helping the poor and the weak.
After these purges, the fascists tried a counter-attack with a big push to start World War III in Syria. The push included an Israeli nuclear attack on Syria, an attempt to frame the Syrian government with a Sarin gas attack and a hysterical Zionist war mongering media campaign. The Pentagon and Russia put a stop to that, with them threatening at one point to declare war on France to prevent an attack on Syria.
Then in Egypt, the Nazi Muslim Brotherhood government, empowerd through fraud, was removed by the military, backed by Egyptian public opinion. A fascist plot to create an oil crisis by closing the Suez Canal was thus prevented.
The Zionist plot to start World War III in the Middle East was dealt another massive blow when the United States Government decided to make friends with Iran. For over 30 years the Zionist media has been hysterically screaming “we must attack Iran because they will have nuclear weapons within a few weeks” Now, this mind numbing charade has been ended.
Instead Iranian and US forces are now working together to fight Zionist/Salafist terrorists in Iraq and elsewhere, according to Mossad linked site DEBKA.

In Asia as well, the fascists and their allies have experienced many defeats. The network of Chinese allies built by George Bush Sr. and his brother Prescott, created with illegal transfers of US military technology and bribes of Iraqi oil, is being quietly dismantled by Xi Jinping and his colleagues.
In North Korea too, the network that helped the fascists with their 311 nuclear and tsunami terror attack against Japan has been purged following the execution of North Korean number 2 power broker Jang Song Thaek and the removal of his allies.
The cabal is also reeling in their European stronghold.
In the UK, the British Parliament forced cabal poodle David Cameron to stop his planned attack on Syria. This is part of an overall move in the UK to fight back against handing over British sovereignty to the unelected fascist EU regime. That counter-attack with continue in 2014.
In France, the regime of Francois Hollande continues to be a fascist cabal stronghold doing things like stealing gold from Mali to help the banksters and trying to prop up the Saudi absolutist slave regime. In Germany, the Merkel regime, while still pushing for greater Germany and EU unity, has also consistently avoided war mongering in the Middle East or elsewhere. Germany is also moving closer to Russia and further from France.
The recent EU attempt to take over the Ukraine failed this year and instead Putin is now on the offensive in Eastern Europe, offering oil and gas in exchange for partnership. With the failure of the attempt to take over Syria by the fascist Saudis and their Zionist allies, and with the installation of a pro-Russian regime in Egypt, Russia in 2013 became undeniably the chief power broker in the Middle East. That means Russia is now in a position to take over the battered but still almighty petrodollar.
However, there is still a lot to be done before the fascist Zionists are permanently removed from power.
Most notably, their agents Mario Draghi, Janet Yellen and Haruhiko Kuroda still sit illegally perched atop the Euro, US Dollar and Yen debt slavery system. Their slave politicians thus remain in power in Washington, Tokyo, London, France and Israel.
Also, in Japan the Zionist Council of Foreign Relations was able to stage a rigged election and install low IQ, Zionist warmongering slave Shinzo Abe into power as dictator in Japan. Abe continues to hand over Japanese wealth to his Zionists masters and follows their instructions to provoke Japan’s Asian neighbours. For example, by refusing to restart Japan’s nuclear reactors he hands over $100 billion a day to the Zionist Nazis and thus allows them to stave off bankruptcy. Abe is also personally buying all sort of property around Tokyo with bribe money from his Zionist puppet masters. He needs to be removed.
Furthermore, the Zionists still sit atop most of the West’s major commercial media companies and are thus able to continue spewing out mind numbing propaganda. They are also still capable of carrying out both fake (Boston bombing) and real (last week’s bus bombings in Russia) terror attacks.
So, in 2014 we need to remove them from these last bastions of power and influence. One likely move to devastate them would be an attack on Saudi Arabia. Last August Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan told Vladimir Putin that “I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us.”.
Now that terrorist attacks have taken place in Russia with the bus bombings in Volvograd (formerly Stalingrad), Putin has the right under international law to attack Saudi Arabia. The Pentagon may join in that attack because it is now clear the Saudi regime worked hand in glove with the Bush Nazis to stage the 911 mass murder and terror attack in New York.
So, we can expect a take-down of that vile regime in 2014. This will remove the main remaining real (as opposed to fraudulent) source of money for the fascists.
The other thing that will be necessary to permanently finish off the fascists will be a move to normalize, tax and regulate the narcotic drug industry for the sake of human health and safety. Doing so will end a $2.5 trillion annual flow of money to criminal enterprises.
President Obama will also have to show he is the real deal by ending the death spiral of the US economy. He can do this easily by treating the current US dollar as a foreign currency and issuing US government money instead of Federal Reserve Board debt instruments.

Is The NSA Blackmailing U.S. Politicians?

David Harris Gershon writes at Daily Kos:

Jay Stanley is a measured, rational policy analyst. He is a man of facts, not given over to wild speculation or sensationalization. Which is why, before offering his theory that the NSA may currently be blackmailing certain politicians to support the agency’s efforts, he sounds almost apologetic.

He sounds apologetic because he doesn’t like what he’s about to say, not having the unmistakable, absolute data necessary to back it up:

Sometimes when I hear public officials speaking out in defense of NSA spying, I can’t help thinking, even if just for a moment, “What if the NSA has something on that person?”Of course it’s natural, when people disagree with you, to at least briefly think, “They couldn’t possibly really believe that, there must be some outside power forcing them to take that position.” Mostly I do not believe that anything like that is now going on.

So why, then, does Stanley proceed to offer what, in truth, is a conspiracy theory regarding the NSA and current political support in Washington? Political support that goes against public opinion?

Because, as he admits, the agency has lost all credibility regarding its actions. More than this, though, it has already been revealed that NSA analysts and cooperating entities have surveilled some of the world’s most powerful and important leaders.

The phone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Communications from the United Nations. Even Pope Francis has been spied upon, it appears.

The NSA’s reported reach into not just the lives of ordinary citizens, but the lives of world leaders, has been so expansive that David Sirota explicitly addressed the potential of NSA blackmail against members of Congress. And as Stanley reminds, NSA surveillance against members of Congress is something that has been alleged by whistleblowers with direct knowledge of such activities.

Whistleblower Russell Tice…alleged that while at the agency he saw wiretap information for members of Congress and the judiciary firsthand. Such fears explain why it is considered an especially serious matter any time elected or judicial officials are eavesdropped upon. The New York Times reported in 2009 that some NSA officials had tried to wiretap a member of Congress without a warrant. Members of Congress (and perhaps the judiciary) surely also noted a Washington Post report based on Snowden documents that the NSA had intercepted a “large number” of calls from the Washington DC area code due to a “programming error.”

Do we know that some members of Congress have been approached by NSA officials in possession of compromising personal information? Do we know that members of Congress vociferously expressing support for the NSA hare doing so for reasons other than political ideology or a concern for electoral politics.

No.

Unfortunately, we know too much already to rule such scenarios out as the stuff of Hollywood. We know too much already about the NSA’s surveillance reach, and about its failure to disclose such activities.

According to former NSA analyst and Bush-era whistleblower Russ Tice, the NSA has been using eavesdropping activities to gather intelligence on powerful people in the U.S. government for years. This year he even claimed that the NSA ordered wiretapping on President Barack Obama when he was a candidate for Senate. Tice, in an interview for the website of FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, said:

“They went after – and I know this because I had my hands literally on the paperwork for these sort of things–they went after high-ranking military officers; they went after members of Congress, both Senate and the House, especially on the intelligence committees and on the armed services committees and some of the–and judicial.

But they went after other ones, too. They went after lawyers and law firms. All kinds of–heaps of lawyers and law firms. They went after judges. One of the judges is now sitting on the Supreme Court that I had his wiretap information in my hand. Two are former FISA court judges. They went after State Department officials. They went after people in the executive service that were part of the White House – their own people. They went after antiwar groups. They went after U.S. international–U.S. companies that that do international business, you know, business around the world. They went after U.S. banking firms and financial firms that do international business. They went after NGOs that – like the Red Cross, people like that that go overseas and do humanitarian work. They went after a few antiwar civil rights groups.

So, you know, don’t tell me that there’s no abuse, because I’ve had this stuff in my hand and looked at it. And in some cases, I literally was involved in the technology that was going after this stuff.”

Tice would later in the interview go on to make that enormous claim that the NSA ordered the wiretapping of then “wannabe senator from Illinois,” Barack Obama, and that he held the NSA order in his own hands at one point.

Why would it matter, if proven true, that President Obama had been wiretapped? According to retired CIA analyst and briefer to numerous presidents Ray McGovern, the reason Obama has largely changed his stance on the NSA’s intelligence gathering practices from when he was a candidate for president, and why he has exponentially ramped up the extrajudicial killing of terror suspects by CIA drones, is because he is at the whim of the intelligence apparatus for things they might have uncovered about his past. On a radio show McGovern said:

“Which leads to the question, why would [Obama] do all these things? Why would he be afraid for example, to take the drones away from the CIA? Well, I’ve come to the conclusion that he’s afraid. Number one, he’s afraid of what happened to Martin Luther King Jr. And I know from a good friend who was there when it happened, that at a small dinner with progressive supporters – after these progressive supporters were banging on Obama before the election, ‘Why don’t you do the things we thought you stood for?’ Obama turned sharply and said, ‘Don’t you remember what happened to Martin Luther King Jr.?’ That’s a quote, and that’s a very revealing quote.“

Is the NSA using wiretapping and other unconventional data gathering methods to gather sensitive private information on government officials to blackmail them into maintaining their support? It’s an unconvincing assertion at best. The possibility, however, that blackmail a-la-J. Edgar Hoover goes on should be considered in the important debate over the future of wiretapping and data collection here in America.

Cave Lindorf writes at CounterPunch:

A revealing page-one article in today’s New York Times (“Tap on Merkel Provides Peek a Vast Spy Net”) reports on how the NSA’s global spying program, dating back at least to early in the Bush/Cheney administration, was vacuuming up the phone conversations (and no doubt later the internet communications) of not just leaders like German Chancellor Angela Merkel, but opposition leader Merkel before her party took power in Germany.

As the Times puts it, the phone monitoring, which actually dates back to the Cold War Era before 1990, “is hardly limited to the 35 leaders of countries like Germany, and also includes their top aides and the heads of opposing parties.”

That’s pretty far-reaching, and the paper says that it has learned, primarily courtesy of revelations from the documents released by fugitive whistleblower Edward Snowden, that the spying went even beyond that, to target up-and-coming potential leaders of so-called “friendly states.”

But the Times buys without question the explanation offered by professional liar James R. Clapper, the director of national intelligence and ultimate head of the embattled National Security Agency, that the NSA’s spying on leaders and potential was and is and has been, first of all, well known to presidents, and secondly that its purpose was simply to see “if what they’re saying gels with what’s actually going on, as well as how other countries’ policies “impact us across a whole range of issues.”

That’s pretty broad. The first explanation is really a euphemistic way of saying the NSA wants to see if American’s purported friends and allies are lying. The second is a euphemistic way of saying that the US is spying to gain inside information about its allies’ political goals and strategies, and probably their negotiating positions on things like trade treaties, international regulations, etc.

What the Times does not ask in its entire report on this spying program on leaders and potential leaders is whether there could be another motive for this extraordinary spying campaign on leaders: blackmail.

How else to explain the remarkably tepid response from the leaders who are the victims of this spying by the NSA on their private communications? How else to explain Europe’s unwillingness to grant sanctuary to Snowden, who after all has allowed them to know about the perfidy of the US? How else to explain Europe’s supine acquiescence to the US in its criminal wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, and its unquestioning support of Israel?

Nor does the Times ask the next obvious question, which is: If the NSA is spying on foreign leaders so widely and thoroughly, actually recording the conversations, not just the numbers being called, and submitting the recordings to keyword searches, isn’t it likely doing the same thing to leaders in the US? And if it is possible to imagine that the NSA is enabling the blackmailing of foreign leaders, isn’t it equally possible that the same thing is going on domestically?

2013 might be called the year of the shape-shifter. President Obama, the leader of the free world, cozied up to Iran, the leading state sponsor of terrorism. Saudi Arabia poured billions into fighting Islamic terrorists in Lebanon and Egypt. Egypt banned Muslim radicals from government.

So what does this confusing scene tell us about 2014? Do our expectations need fixing?

For starters, Americans expect their president to be committed to democracy.

Iran is not a democracy. It is ruled by violent fanatics who deny essential human rights to their own citizens, fund and execute mass murder in other states, kidnap and kill Americans, and dedicate themselves to the annihilation of Israel.

President Rouhani was “elected” last June after 99% (8 out of 686) of the would-be candidates, including all women, were prohibited from running for office.

And yet in 2013, the White House Press Secretary “congratulate[d] the Iranian people for making their voices heard during Iran’s election [and] for their participation in the political process,” and said the election represented “the will of the voters.”

President Obama himself talked to the U.N. General Assembly about Rouhani’s “mandate” “from the Iranian people.”

In other words, the president subverted genuine democratic aspirations in Iran, and legitimized a devious thug and the lethal regime he represents. We now know why. He was planning to cut a deal (profoundly affecting our national security) with those frauds.

Americans also expect their president to be committed to human rights.

November elections to the U.N.’s top human rights body, the Human Rights Council, turned China, Russia, and Cuba into U.N. human rights authorities.

Half the members of the Council are not even democracies and Islamic states hold the balance of power by controlling the African and Asian blocs. In 2013 the Council criticized Israel more than any other state, almost twice as much as Syria, and six times as much as Iran.

And yet in 2013 the lead cheerleader of the Human Rights Council was the Obama administration. It regularly generates brag sheets on Council “achievements.” In October the State Department bragged about a resolution on Syria “focused on ... accountability.”

Recent reports put the death toll in Syria at 130,000, the war is entering its third year, and President Assad is totally unaccountable.

Americans expect their president to be committed to the rule of law.

The U.N. Security Council adopted four legally-binding sanction resolutions on Iran beginning in 2006. American diplomacy managed to extract even Russian and Chinese support for international laws that state “Iran shall without further delay…suspend all enrichment related activities.”

And yet in 2013 President Obama decided to destroy that hard-won consensus, trash those legal obligations, and authorize Iran to continue enrichment activities.

The Geneva Conventions on the laws of war rightly refuse to grant immunity to legitimate military targets using civilians as human shields. The legal limit is one of proportionality. “An attack which may be expected to cause incidental loss of civilian life [or] injury to civilians” is prohibited if it “would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated.”

And yet in May 2013 President Obama decided he would ignore all that and create a revolutionary new rule applying only to American armed forces.

He declared that even in the face of “terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people,” “before any strike is taken, there must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured.”

Tying our military’s hands behind their backs has already had real implications. After a senior commander of al-Shabaab was located in a home in Somalia in October, a drone strike was eschewed. Navy SEALs attempting to capture him instead, were forced to retreat during a gun battle out of concern for any potential civilian casualties.

Americans expect their president to be committed to the security of our allies.

And yet in 2013 President Obama forced Israel to release convicted Palestinian murderers as a “confidence-building measure.” The murdered were old and young, men and women – stabbed, strangled, shot or blown up. Their freed killers, and anticipated recidivists, were treated as heroes by fellow Palestinians. The only confidence built has been in terrorism as a successful political tool.

It turns out that our 2013 expectations were not the problem. Expect 2014 to be even worse.
