A Parable About Observation

Once upon a time, there was a busy crossroads.
It was a well-known place, where many people passed through.
Sometimes people just hung out there, and talked crap.
Lots of people started hanging out and talking crap.

One day, one of the crap talkers brought a pointy stick.
The next day, all of the crap talkers were holding a stick.
The day after that, a fight broke out.
Two people holding pointy sticks were into it good --

A circle formed around the argument.
Everyone with a pair of eyes gathered around, to watch the fight.
One person, with very good eyes, realized,
"if these two keep fighting, someone could lose an eye!"

This Good Samaritan went straight away into the heart of the quarrel,
to make things all better for everyone at the crossroads.
But right when it looked like the Good Samaritan was going to succeed,
someone swung a pointy stick!

The pointy stick went right into the Good Samaritan's eye.
Everyone was shocked and horrified that such a smart person and good observer,
could get injured by such a stupid quarrel.

The two fighters realized what happened, and started to apologize for the fight.
But a wise man who had seen everything from a nearby hilltop said,
"it looked to me like you guys didn't need any help. these things do happen."
And everyone realized, it was stupid to break the circle,
when two idiots are quarreling with pointy sticks,
and furthermore, it is not beyond reason, that anyone close to such a thing,
could lose an eye--

and without your eyes, you can't really observe anything,
so that said, be careful that you don't go looking for trouble,
especially up close.
