    Default True Detective: HBO TV - Dark and Riveting

    I wanted to post this as a new thread, because I consider True Detective as one of the best American (HBO) TV shows I have watched recently.

    I am not American, but I consider some issues to have no gender, nor nationality, and this fits well into that 'universal truths' category.

    Heavy content, be advised.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2356777/

    I managed to watch the first episode on our HBO channel online - for the first time in my life I can watch films online completely legally, since the online channel comes as a package with the monthly HBO TV payment plan.

    I can't say 'Enjoy', because it is not that type of an 'entertainment' show, but it very well worth a few hours of watching time.
    The acting is mesmerizing.

    If anyone feels compelled to share ideas and reviews, I think it will be appreciated.
    I, myself, have come across several articles recently.

    Again, be prepared for a serious take on some 'reality' issues.

    Edited to add:
    I consider this an act of peaceful revolution, done by two actors turned executive producers.

    Just started watching this one. I truly appreciate the depth of the show, especially Matthew McConaughey 's character who was an undercover narco, a genius pessimist with a bitter outlook on humanity and the human ego. He expresses distaste towards our self-righteous idea of a personality, something that is separate from the "one body", as he puts it. He accepts that most people can't handle him and gripes when others lie to themselves and others. He is extremely dependent on drugs and alcohol in order to maintain stability.

    I appreciate the show for what it is. And yet certain thoughts always enter my head when I start really getting into a TV show.. If all these television corporations are monopolized and are contaminating the airwaves with thoroughly researched brainwashing mechanisms, then why is this message/art/symbolism being injected into the masses? Who wants me to see this and why do they want me to see it? What's the motive?

    Quote but right there, in the last instant.
    Is an unmistakable relief, see, because they were afraid
    and now they saw for the very first time
    how easy it was to just let go,
    and they saw--
    In that last nanosecond, they saw what they were,
    that you, yourself, this whole big drama,
    it was never anything but a jerry-rig of presumption and dumb will and you could just let go finally,
    now that you didn't have to hold on so tight...
    to realize that all your life --you know, all your love, all your hate, all your memory, all your pain-
    it was all the same thing.
    It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room,
    a dream about being a person...

    I reached up until episode 4.
    I think that is the best I have seen in years.
    A bit on the disturbing side, but nevertheless quite intense.
    Of course if one is able to face some truths face on.

    I love this show, glad you made the thread.

    If you haven't seen it start now because your missing out. I have always liked mcconaughey but he has never been regarded as a top actor, I think Dallas buyers club and especially true detective will seal the deal for him because he is awesome. Harrelson is also great as always.

    As dark as this show is, it is even more cerebral and thought provoking. The whole back story and mythos if you will is based on the book "the king in yellow". It is a book of short stories based around a fictitious play of the same name as the book (the king in yellow) reading or seeing the play is connected with insanity and tragic events.

    Morals, friendship, egoism, lust, truth, lies, perception, reality, addiction, psychology, ritualistic and satanistic murder, corruption and elitism all in one with great acting.

    Cant wait for episode 7 tonight. Only two more to go.

    Yes, me too.
    I noticed M.M. when he played in "The Lincoln Lawyer". He has been a favorite of mine ever since.
    I have to find the book you mentioned.

    Edited to add:
    Found the book at project gutenberg.

    Very addictive, excellent series I must admit. Despite I don´t watch series usually I have got hooked with that one. Both main characters played by great actors. Well written story line. Superb piece of movie art. Thanks for tip, chocolate. I am about to start episode 5. I recommend to others to try.

    thepainterdoug, I agree the soundtrack is amazing creating relevant atmosphere to the story...

    CivilDawn, I have got same questions sometimes...

    Now, going to continue with episode 5. Enjoy people.

    This is a story about ritual sacrifice and child abuse, in the US. The thing that gets a lot of people (around here) sit on the edge of their chairs.

    This is one "Eyes Wide Shut", anew, with much more detail and much less artistism.

    But instead of being a conspiracy theory published on a blog, on a forum, or in a website, it is a far-and-wide TV show for everyone to watch and draw their conclusions, and be warned about what is going on in fact in the world we live in.

    People always ask when the "disclosure" is going to happen. I guess that is quite a good example of a disclosure. It is done brilliantly, witty, dark and in an unforgiving way.

    Ever since I watched episode 1, I knew why is this show important. Not because of the first class acting, but it did help.
    I am currently watching episode 7, which aired yesterday in the US.

    These days very few things can make me start a thread. After this one I doubt I will start another anytime soon.
    (I confess, I also don't watch US TV series at all, not the new ones anyway.)

    ~~~
    I hope more people will decide to give it a chance.
    ~~~

    For my Bulgarian friends -> I am watching online through HBO GO (Bulsatcom) with a monthly payment for HBO film package.
    But one can find it online, or for download, easily, it is very popular with lots of seed.

    Every once in a while there are TV shows that are truly artistic and convey a message, this is one of them. I am grateful when there is something that appeals to the masses that sparks suspicion that there truly are evil people in power and perhaps we as a society should become better judges of character.

    That was probably one of the most spiritual TV shows I have happened to see in the last several years. It just briefly touched the greater human monster hiding behind the darkness, but even that small part was enough for those who see the world more clearly.
    It was 'one story, the oldest - light versus dark.'

    I also am really very happy for Matthew McConaughey and his very recent Oscar.
    Some light is just way too strong, and no amount of darkness can devour it.

    Cheers.

    "How's that?"

    [...]
    I will say one thing about the fan theories, they were able to spot Errol Childress fairly early. (And perhaps with a better connection, the mower's muff versus the painted house.) I'm not sure what that added to the viewing experience except to ruin a 'twist' on a show not too concerned with pulling the rug out from under you. Still. Congrats? Perhaps that's why some may find the finale unfulfilling where I found it transcendent. A beautiful way to wrap up a series rooted in existential and ontological crises. And don't tell me that the end is Rust living in his 'locked room coma.' His arc reminds me of Detective Somerset's quote at the end of Se7en, another undeniably influence on True Detective...

    "Ernest Hemingway once wrote 'the world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."

    Created (and written) by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective returning for a second series seems likely. Expect an official announcement from HBO as soon as they start lining up potential replacements for Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and director Cary Joji Fukunaga.
    I would say than, please title it differently. With all of them replaced, what would be left ...
