Default Christian Ink: Mummy's 1,300-Year-Old Thigh Tattoo Revealed

A tattoo was discovered on the thigh of a Sudanese woman who died 1,300 years ago. This CT scan 3D visualization shows her mummified remains.

A Christian tattoo has been discovered high on the inner thigh of a mummified Sudanese woman. New images released by the British Museum show the ancient ink, which dates back to 1,300 years ago.

The well-preserved corpse was discovered during a recent archaeological excavation in northern Sudan along the banks of the Nile River. CT scans allowed researchers to peek under the woman's skin and look at her bones, while infrared imaging showed her faint thigh tattoo more clearly.

Researchers at the British Museum have interpreted the tattoo as a monogram for the archangel Michael, stacking the ancient Greek letters spelling Michael (M-I-X-A-H-A), The Telegraph reported. Archaeologists have previously found the symbol emblazoned on church mosaics and artifacts, but never before on human flesh.

Infra-red reflectography of the tattoo found on the mummified remains of a Sudanese woman.

Curator Daniel Antoine told the paper that the ancient body art is the first evidence of a tattoo from this period, calling it a "very rare find."

Antoine doesn't know for sure what purpose the tattoo would have served, but speculated it might have been intended to protect the woman, The Telegraph reported.

The mummy is set to go on display at the British Museum in London in May as part of an exhibition called "Ancient Lives: New Discoveries."

The mummy is hardly the first, or even the oldest, to bear tattoos. It was common to get inked in many cultures around the world; mummies found in places like Peru, Egypt and the Philippines attest to a long and diverse history of body art.

At 5,300 years old, Ötzi the Iceman is Europe's oldest mummy and he may also hold the distinction of having the world's oldest surviving tattoos. The mummy was found frozen in the Alps in 1991 and he has several tattoos, mostly in the form of small lines and crosses, etched in soot around his joints. The markings are suspected to have been less decorative than therapeutic, since Ötzi is thought to have suffered from joint pain before he died.

Another notable frozen mummy discovered in the 1990s had tattoos, too. The 2,500-year-old body of a woman in her late 20s was found in 1993 in the permafrost of the Ukok Plateau in southwestern Siberia. She was tattooed with intricate animal motifs, abstract shapes and mythological creatures such as a deer with a griffon's head, according to The Siberian Times. Other mummies of the Siberian Pazyryk culture are inked with similar designs and animals like tigers, leopards and elk.

I have a strong feeling she was marked with this. It is only my feeling, but I got a sense of her being marked by someone else, almost a mark to eradicate another belief system or of ownership. Interesting that came strongly the moment I read/saw the mark.

This looks very much like the Sigils from the Grand Grimoire, except in this case, the entity is an angel, not a demon

Michael is one of the good guys -- don't worry so much!

It's a fairly tame tattoo compared to modern art. IMO. I don't feel that she was forced to wear it.
If it was a brand given by an owner it would likely have been in a place difficult to hide, i.e. face, shoulder, bottom of foot, etc.
Somewhere visible. In many African countries people cover the thigh. But not the other bits. @@ lol

Looking at the Sigil I feel an absolutely enormous POWER. Dangerous, but not evil.
A sense of capability and directness. Michael indeed.

p.s. it's like a primitive monogram -- like the Toyota thing.

    Quote http://www.toyota-global.com/showroom/emblem/passion/

There are three ovals in the new logo that are combined in a horizontally symmetrical configuration. The two perpendicular ovals inside the larger oval represent the heart of the customer and the heart of the company. They are overlapped to represent a mutually beneficial relationship and trust between each other.

The overlapping of the two perpendicular ovals inside the outer oval symbolize "T" for Toyota, as well as a steering wheel, representing the vehicle itself. The outer oval symbolizes the world embracing Toyota. Each oval is contoured with different stroke thicknesses, similar to the "brush" art known in Japanese culture.

The space in the background within the logo exhibits the "infinite values" which Toyota conveys to its customers: superb quality, value beyond expectation, joy of driving, innovation, and integrity in safety, the environment and social responsibility.
p.p.s. here is a 'modern' occult Michael sigil:

and the older version from OP (ty Skywizard!):

    _______

She is pretty much wearing an unbound Sigil (minus magic ring) of protection I guess! Pretty neat!

Although some say that Michael gave Solomon the ring:

Once again he is an extreme power, not just a hedge familiar

Quote In the Hebrew Scriptures, and the Old Testament, the prophet Daniel experiences a vision after having undergone a period of fasting. In the vision in Daniel 10:13-21 an angel identifies Michael as the protector of Israel. Daniel refers to Michael as a "prince of the first rank".[6] Later in the vision in Daniel 12:1 Daniel is informed about the role of Michael during the "Time of the End" when there will be "distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations" and that:[7]

"At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise."
In view of this, Michael is seen as playing an important role as the protector of Israel, and later of the Christian Church.

Although the three occurrences of Michael in the Book of Daniel 10:13, 10:21 and 12:1 all refer to the same individual, who acts in similar ways in all three cases, the last one is set at the "end times", while the first two refer to local time in Persia.[8] These are the only three references to Michael in the Hebrew Bible.[9]

The references to the "captain of the host of the Lord" encountered by Joshua in the early days of his campaigns in the Promised Land (Joshua 5:13-15) have at times been interpreted as Michael the Archangel, but there is no theological basis for that assumption, given that Joshua then worshiped this figure, and angels are not to be worshiped. Some scholars also point that the figure may refer to God himself.[10][11] In the book of Joshua's account of the fall of Jericho, Joshua "looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand". When the still unaware Joshua asks which side of the fight the Archangel is on, the response was, "neither...but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come".

People in church talk about "testimonies", etc., one's personal story.
I think it's pretty cool that this woman, even a thousand years after her death, still testifies to her faith/beliefs/piety simply via a tattoo she wore in a private place.

In our modern, filthy world, frankly, that's pretty interesting and refreshing to see.
A person from ancient times who expressed their faith literally -- visibly. And believed it wholly.

"Mummies" are reference to a body that has undergone a process of preservation -- in order to preserve skin, etc. That's the whole point of a "mummy" -- is preservation of the original form so it does not rot.

Tattoos fade from living skin because eventually all the skin cells in the body are replaced and they take a lot of that ink with it (about 10 years of living to fade a tattoo as that is the approximate turnover of skin cells). Dead people don't replace skin cells. so once they are dead -- the skin is stained like that forever -- if preserved so it does not rot, that is.

Actually, I didn't mean a brand or ownership mark, or a mark related to attempts to undo her own belief system so that others could see. I meant in that area purposefully to be a private reminder...it is a personal area related to self and womanhood and so forth. But that was just my feeling and I have no clue. I'm sure my feeling was related to my life experiences. I hope it was a joyful thing for her.

you're right i think FOX made it a "jesus Tat" and it might have been a boyfriend.
    i see what you're saying.

i think the press went a bit wild with this one,
yet the Greek letters makes it obvious, as does the SIGIL, at least to me I think it's for the angel -- but it very well could have been a BFF

I'm totally getting the angel connection with this, with the six wings of the seraphim.

Relates to Yaleyel of the choir of the seraphim.

Helps to repress unjust revolts, aids conjugal peace, dominates kings and princes, influences all generations

    Famous Archangels Among the Seraphim

The archangels who help lead the seraphim are Seraphiel, Michael, and Metatron. Seraphiel focuses the most on directing the seraphim; Michael and Metatron help while also fulfilling their other duties (Michael as the leader of all the holy angels, and Metatron as God's chief record-keeper). Archangels Uriel and Chamuel are also part of the seraphim rank of angels.

Below is an article on the mummy from the Mirror that mentions that Michael was the patron saint of Sudan at the time and, in a separate article from the Telegraph which is quite long, it was mentioned:

Quote The owner of the tattoo was a woman who died in about AD 700 and lived in a Christian community on the banks of the Nile. (source).

The British Museum found the word 'Michael' inked on the body of a Sudanese woman who they believe died at around 700 AD.

Ancient: The mummified woman died around 700 AD

A tattoo of a man's name has been discovered by scientists on the inner thigh of a 1300-year-old mummy.

Egyptologists at the British Museum made the startling discovery while examining the ancient mummified body of a Sudanese woman, thought to have died around 700 AD.

The symbol, tattooed on the skin of the inner thigh of her right leg, spells out the ancient Greek characters M-I-X-A-H-A, which translates as Michael.

But it's not for a secret lover however, as the tattoo is thought to be a protective biblical symbol representing the Archangel Michael.

Intimate: The symbol was found on the skin of the mummy's inner thigh

It appears in the New Testament Book of Revelations as a protector and leader of God's armies against the forces of Satan.

He's also the patron saint of medieval Sudan.

Dr Daniel Antoine told the Daily Telegraph: "She is the first evidence of a tattoo from this period. This is a very rare find.”

Experts still don't know what length of skirts were fashionable in ancient Sudan, so it's hard to say whether her ink would have been visible.

But thousands of people will see it every day when the mummy goes on public display for the first time in May.

Wow, both of you posted pretty interesting stuff there.
Quite fascinating -- beats the heck out of the depressing mummy stories at the Miner's Landing in Seattle, haha
