Hi markoid,

The blog, Ideas For Self Sufficient Living During Financially Turbulent Times, was originally put together as a reminder of what I needed to learn to prepare for a more simple life style. I'm totally sure what to think of that... we've got this "blessing" years ago.
At least, be sure to always carry the passport in a shielding cover - to block random reading attempts from outside ('cause your data and prints are on an RFID-chip).

The world snooker championship has just ended. Snooker is an elaborate form of pool, which is an elaborate form of 3-ball billiards. I’m thinking most people round here will think this is just a load of balls, and historically speaking, this is probably true. However, I want to look at it from a different angle, and the game is all about angles – very like astrology in fact.

The mathematics seem too cool to be by chance, but actually nothing is by design. The game evolved by adding extra balls to accommodate extra players before reverting to two players. You have a white cue ball used to hit six colours lined up in something resembling a chakra system, but actually a tau cross formation, embedded with a triangle of 15 reds. You alternate reds and a colour until the reds are gone (the colours are brought back each time), and then the colours, worth 2 to 7 points, are potted in order and not brought back. So a maximum 36 balls can be potted for a maximum score of 147 (15*1 reds + 15*7 blacks + 27, colours).

There are basically two kinds of tactics you can use. If you have an attacking game, it is all about creating trines, or thereabouts. This allows you both to pot a ball and line up the cue ball for the next shot. The better you can do this, the more points you can score, because the highest values, black pink and blue (7, 6 and 5 points) are closest to the reds. The ideal is utter simplicity, and the most accomplished performance was probably by the 5-times world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, who once cleared the table in inside 5 and a half minutes (that’s nine seconds a shot, some of them left-handed).

The second tactic is defensive. This is all about conjunctions. If you can line up another ball between the cue ball and the one your opponent has to hit, that is called a snooker, and he will give you points for a foul shot by missing the ball or hitting the wrong colour. Normally this is a tactical shot to play, when you cannot score, to make life difficult for your opponent. But it can be turned into a strategic weapon, as it was the other day to grind down O’Sullivan’s spectacular attacking play into an endless series of snookers. Here is a more conventional example of a defensive move leading to a more attacking position.

The third aspect is squares. You use squares (and other angles as well) to ricochet the cue ball off one or more side cushions, either to play a snookered ball or to line up the cue ball for the next shot.

Ultra-defensiveness is something of a plague in sport because it is somehow against the spirit. In soccer, it is called ‘parking the bus’, i.e. blocking the goal with defenders. It is seen as fair when smaller teams use this tactic to avoid a hiding. Sometimes then get a break and can actually beat a better team. Clearly less skill is involved in defending than attacking. When it is done with greater skill, it becomes obvious how destructive a dis-ease it is in a situation where creativity on the contrary thrives on itself (including the other’s creativity), leading to greater ease, comfort and pleasure. What was a game has become all too serious. But there is no complaining because basically no rules have been broken.

Nothing new here of course. And any resemblance with the ‘big picture’ is totally unfortuitous.
