It was an unusually dry and breezy 87 F/30 C today, while out for a walk.

    Intuition said, “Stay the course.”
    I whined, “Too many people.”

Not a minute later, a celery green frog gave a bitty hop to where I was about to plant my sneaker on the cement sidewalk.

“I’ve never seen one this color. Will he bite or sting? Poisonous? Fear…geez.”

Celery Green was caught in a cement prison yard. And now, he was not happy with this prison guard that encaged him. For a good ten to fifteen minutes, he struggled and puddled in my hands.

Clearly, he was unfamiliar with the art of mind to mind communication.

Then, with a kerplunk, he went under and grabbed ahold of nearby cattail grasses, and inched his way up to survey his new pad.

I thanked Celery Green for a precious opportunity to feel what Source must feel at a time such as this.

Funny, Paula, about a half hour ago I was having a smoke break at work, and on the way in wound up with a very large black butterfly alighting on my finger.

Don’t know if I’ve posted about this artist before – Marina Abramovic. She expresses a little trepidation at meeting the British public, and if you read the comments, you will understand why.

Oh, and one more....reading about counting rice grains for hours and hours

I indulged last night when tidying up my jewelry table,
to sort the tiniest beads into piles of different colors...
Wondering if I was losing my mind.
But rationalized it as therapy...compulsive need to create order out of chaos.
All so-called insane behavior can be rationalized.
What makes it sane is the intent behind it.

Default Re: Here and Now...What's Happening?

They say ‘traduttore traditore’, the translator is a traitor; here it is probably more the editore, but I have just discovered a massive example of a translation which is a travesty of the original. If I had been the translator of this book, I would have kicked up a huge fuss, which is basically what I’m going to do here. And if I were one to swear (see yesterday’s discussion), I would be doing that right now. It is no coincidence that the book – a novel – is deliberately ambiguous, bigtime, about a subject that we are seeing on Avalon and elsewhere as among the truly major scandals of our world that are being covered up, namely child abduction and pedophilia. I am referring to Mary McGarry Morris’s first novel, Vanished, published in 1988, which I have been reading and rereading. The original English was only deliberately ambiguous up until an epilogue, which removed all ambiguity. I have just received a French translation for further study and for sharing – only to discover at first glance that this epilogue has been quietly excised, removed, disappeared, vanished.

What is left has a very disturbing kind of ambiguity, of the kind that allows these people to operate by staying under the radar. What was a denunciation of child abduction and pedophilia becomes an apology for them. For sure, all the in-your-face warning signs are still there, but the actual workings are so intricate that it becomes all too easy to lose one’s bearings. But where the author’s craft and the almost likable pedophile hero’s wiles diverge is precisely in this brief epilogue, where the fiction of what has gone before is divulged and the actual facts of the situation explained. This is the whole purpose and structure of the novel. The reader almost literally climbs into a truck and is taken for a long ride. What happens when he steps out of the last vehicle is absolutely crucial. This is where serious writing diverges from pulp fiction. It requires rereading, which is designed to be corrective, but it can only be that when the initial reading has been done, i.e. by willingly entering into the spirit of the thing and consenting to possible manipulation. Only then can you understand how you’ve been had, and that is the lesson one wants to take away from what is intended to be a cautionary tale.

Briefly, to give a flavor of the book, it is the story told from the viewpoint of one Aubrey Wallace, a retard, the product of too much inbreeding, as seen among the aristocracy and as here in the backwoods. The main feature of his condition is that he gets things and people mixed up; so for example, someone will be described as doing something that he himself perpetrated. When you start applying this knowledge to the story, it is already too late to make complete sense of what is going on. For one thing it is too confusing, and for another, the main lie was set in place in the prologue, five years before the main story, and before the reader has any notion of what he has let himself in for or the type of effort of understanding that is going to be required. ‘Who’s ever going to believe a grown man could be stolen away by a fourteen- or fifteen- or sixteen-year-old’? We suspend disbelief because we know the man is a retard and we don’t know how his mind works – that is what we are here to find out. And yet we already know that his wife thinks he is a ‘monster of deceit’ – but only to rationalize having married a simpleton. This grotesque notion of the adult abduction by a child is the in-your-face untruth that the kidnapped girl, aptly named Dotty, debunks in the 2-page epilogue. She explains how her subsequent behavior that allows us to buy into the story was due to her crazed state. On only the second day, something ‘just happens’: a baby is taken during a burglary when it starts speaking and might be heard by its mother. We are told Dotty was responsible: it turns out she was not. Wallace did, and it was no accident. Five years later, the child complains to him of having been molested by another man. Wallace’s response of skirting the issue (not nice) and feeling intense shame indicate that this is him again. The child, aptly called Canny, acts as his main cover, turning the three into a family, innocently living the lie of loving her ‘Pops’ and ‘Momma’. Through her eyes, incomprehension is no longer a matter of being a retard with something to hide, it is the intelligent innocence that keeps the thing going. Meanwhile, the actual story is about how it gradually unravels, how the older girl gradually maneuvers into a position of saving them both, but seen through the uncomprehending eyes of Wallace.

So the suppression of the epilogue is much worse than having a detective novel without the explanation of the crime to settle the conjecture. Here we have total suppression of the crime itself. The actual main crime is not the kidnapping of the baby; and the vanished of the title is not even the disappearance of Aubrey Wallace, who mysteriously drives off one day. It is the kidnapping of the girl Dotty. We are told from the outset that a man has been murdered, presumably by his daughter, because she has disappeared. It turns out that this girl is Dotty, abducted by Wallace, who murders her father in order to take her and abuse her. Later a whole family is killed, to cover his tracks, by Wallace, who again accuses Dotty, to cover his tracks.

Hence the French version without the epilogue ends with police intervention and the words ‘Aubrey Wallace was dead, Shot eleven times, Not a bullet had hit his heart. Not a one.’ And, as the prologue began with ‘This is the true story’, what we have is the truth, a gaping hole in the truth and nothing but a massive lie. Incidentally, we find that the title itself, Disparue, a feminine singular, is itself a mistranslation and should either be a plural or preferably a non-countable form like the English.

All rather complicated, but isn’t that how things function generally?

They say ‘traduttore traditore’, the translator is a traitor; here it is probably more the editore, but I have just discovered a massive example of a translation which is a travesty of the original. If I had been the translator of this book, I would have kicked up a huge fuss, which is basically what I’m going to do here. all ambiguity. I have just received a French translation for further study and for sharing – only to discover at first glance that this epilogue has been quietly excised, removed, disappeared, vanished.
    Snip...

My life only becomes complicated when I zoom in on it. Then I change countries.
    Again, and again.
So when you start over, and ask the question "what currency do they use here?" it's one way of returning to simplicity.
And Barbados (or any Caribbean island, or that matter) is a good way to start over.
Small, stuck in the past, and you can sleep out of doors, and survive on passion fruit)

Makes a healthy break from living the life of Hercule Poirot and his translators.

(Until you run across a whodunit scenario in the Caribbean.
Which will outdo the complexity of the French version any time...)

This is exactly why Araucaria that I always prefer to see movies and read books in their original version if possible, the message is always somewhat different somewhere, even when it is not clear omission as you expressed.

In Spanish, I will even take the English or French translation to verify my understanding, but still read in Spanish.

When i have no choice, then, ok, i will take whatever there is as translation.

I will always remember Piaget having been mistranslated from French to English for his theories on children growth and psychological impacts and having therefore never made a hit in the USA because of it. He was as known as Freud in Europe and this findings very well researched..

14th of May, full moon - A shaman said to Klaus Dona some time ago that he had to go to Japan with a crystal skull - he is the keeper of.
At this time he is at Mount Aso and it is said that he will be a kind of "key" in a ritual overthere
to activate all stone formations (Stonehenge, pyramids, ...) worldwide.

So if you are living nearby a stone formation - keep your eyes open
