    Post Official Netflix Recommendations Thread!

Hello all! I was just thinking... We don't seem to have one thread around here that speaks just about the alternative-media/newage/sciencey related films available on Netflix.

I have SO Many of these Netflix movies on my queue that I have not watched yet, and sometimes I don't watch them because I am not sure whether they will be worth the time or not.

SO.... I was thinking: We could use a thread that keeps us current on the recommended watches available on Netflix at any given time. I would be willing to help keep the list going. I think it would be a good idea if people wanted to use this thread to post the name of the project as well as the genre and a small snippet of why you recommend it.

I'm not against using this thread to poo-poo on a Netflix selection either because I have sat through some stuff on there that just never got really good and wished I had known beforehand haha.

what do you guys think? Worth the time? If not, I can go along my merry way and forget this silly idea!

UPDATE: MAY 23, 2014: This list is going and awesome! However, I ask that we keep the recommendations here to ONLY CURRENT NETFLIX STREAMING available titles just to keep on task and to make my list keeping easier. If you notice that one of the titles has discontinued streaming, you can also let me know in the future, and I will remove it or color code it to indicate so!

I think you just did, and I'll start you off.

    Torchwood

Modern day british series about a skeleton crew/team of alien monitors and dimensional watch-persons. They deal with ancient/ET technology, time travel, dimensional rifts, and good old-fashioned human error.

The first few seasons are a little hokey,... but season 4 is where it starts getting interesting. HUGE references to FEMA camps, government takeover, eugenics, the PTB,... lots of direct or implicit references.

They even give a shoutout to Dr. Rupert Shedrake and the morphic field theory!

Thanks, Shezbeth! The list is started! I will also keep the name of the recommender on the title recommended in case this takes off and people tend to use it and start to realize they have similar tastes with a particular recommender!

I will go ahead and add 4 of my favorite documentaries on Netflix right now. I consider them MUST SEES.

    1. Bully - A heartbreaking documentary showing how bullying has affected or is still affecting kids in school. These cases are extreme and compelling. This is impossible for me to watch without crying a lot, but the message is powerful.

    2. Blackfish - Seeing as my avatar is an orca, I am very invested in these creatures. This film gives a heartbreaking argument for why they should never be kept in captivity. It is mostly focused around Sea World and a specific whale named Tillikum.

    3. The Whale - Yes, another Orca documentary. However, this is my favorite of all of the list so far actually. This story is so darn touching and really brings into perspective how emotional and intelligent these creatures really are. This is the film that made me believe that orcas may actually be even more complex/intelligent than humans - at least emotionally.

    4. Life in a Day - A beautiful documentary of compiled footage from around the world all shot in one day. I love this film because in day to to day life it is easy to get caught up in your own crap and lose perspective. It's just one of those projects that reminds me of why we keep fighting the good fight.

Thanks for the thread, a good idea indeed

Just a piece of advice, since the selection on Netflix greatly varies depending on which country you are in it might be a good idea to add which region you found the movie/show/documentary in. Just a thought! I personally use a DNS service called unotelly.com that allows me to choose from different regions on services like Netflix, etc. It is a paid service, but worth it!

    A few perhaps obvious recommendations:

    - House of Cards (Netflix original series, several regions)
    - The X-Files (U.S)
    - Fringe (U.S, Norway)

I am sure more will come to mind later, will have to review their selection again

    Cheers

Good idea! It would be helpful too if posts would include info as to whether the films recommended are available streaming from Netflix (meaning you can watch it on your computer) or just in DVD (meaning you have to have a DVD mailed to you).
For people who aren't familiar with how Netflix works, this would be good to know also, so they can get a better idea of what Netflix offers.
And we could also give a link for the movie on the Netflix site.
The following are all available streaming on Netflix in the US

If you can find it on Netflix, see the great French documentary on insects Micorcosmos. Astounding close up video of unparalled beauty and interest.

And the most beautiful movie of all time, Spring Summer Winter Fall & Spring. Nothing like it.

Ah. I MEANT to include in the OP that this was for the STREAMING options only. Almost anything is available via the disks, but most people aren't using them anymore. So let's keep this one to streaming for now?

    Good idea about the links!

WOW, have you ever hit my hot-button. chuckle chuckle.
I'm always talkin about Sci-Fy, being a form of scientific disclosure, and Netflix is jammed full of it.

Eureka: (Grand Slam) My fav of them all. 5 years of nothing but and you will be amazed. Much of that which they show, we already have.
It follows the escapades of the local town sheriff of a govment town and secret govment science facility, and some of the "problems" developed by
their "new stuff". ccc. My fav of the show, is Martha. cc. so cool.

Torchwood: (Of course) for reasons mentioned.

Surface: Little snippets of disclosure throughout. Eposode 14 and 15 they even show an entrance to one of their underground tunnel systems. yep. do.
They even show one method, for how scientists are recruited for the underground scientific community. (You know... the one that's 1,000 years
ahead of us. The one that Star Trek, was based on!!) (Star Wars - also based on true events. Froma time before Earth, was even a thought.) hmm.

gotta go for now. will add more later, if others don't mention my favs'. ccc.

Torchwood is an offshoot from Doctor Who. if you're a Doctor Who fan, you'll like Torchwood. Also, Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who. The third series was a very good as well, in my opinion.

Fringe, Doctor Who, Breaking Bad and Farscape are good shows to watch.
There's something that doesn't make sense. Let's go and poke it with a stick.

MICROCOSMOS without a doubt one of the best films--if not THE best-- I've ever seen that gave me an expanded perspective on life.

I think that if every human being on Earth watched this extraordinary film, there'd be a whole lot more of what I keep promoting--

I watched this a couple of years ago at the urging of George Green in his interview with Bill And Kerry.

It was Green's take that cloning has been going on for quite some time before mainstream science professed to be able to do it, and Green stated that the method was outlined in this movie. It's a decent movie.

Nobody has mentioned Captain America The Winter Soldier Movie yet.
It is insanely good, and I only say so because it involves topics we discuss on this forum, and paints these things in a plausible thought provoking light.

I agree with Nancy on "THE EVENT", "BATTLESTAR GALLICTICA" and "FIREFLY"
I still can't figure out how The Event and Firefly got canceled after one season.

No one has mentioned "GAME OF THRONES", so I'll go ahead and mention it.
For pure entertainment value, it is really good.

Sorry if the netflix qualifier was lost on me.

Delight started a thread (mentions "chick flicks", which it's definitely veered off of) that has tons of gems. Unfortunatley everyone posts trailers, and some of them make whatever I'm browsing on crash--so it gets a little frustrating on some pages and impossible (for me) to post on others:

Netflix titles only please! I love recommendations of all varieties for sure, but I wanted to have a Netflix specific thread since so many of us have accounts there and because the library over there is ever changing and hard to keep up with and figure out which stuff is the good stuff.

Thank you all! Keep em coming!

Love the ending on "The Event". ccc. But... it begs for far more than where they left it!!! As do most of these series that we find on Netflix.

Another I will ad to the mix here that so far seems to be missing, is:

"Continuim" - somethin like that... ferget how it's spelled, but that's close. Bout a woman Cop, from the future that goes to the past, chasin bad guys.

DNA... you mention cloning, has been going on for some time, and I will say yes. (1932) AND... the movie: "The Sixth Day", staring Arnold Swartshisname?" (sorry arnny) cc. Is a perfect depiction of what is now possible, although it is not owned and controled by one person as depicted in the movie. And "IS" the very reason we keep hearing that many of our top world leaders, are clones. yep.

Plus, though not trying to get sidetracked or derail yer thread Zaya, if some don't get Netflix, many of these shows can be seen on YouTube. And even a few on YT, that aren't on NF. Such as: "For All Time"; Staring "Mark Harmon", and is very well done. It's about alternate realities and timelines. He goes through a tunnel on his daily commuter train, todays time, and comes out the other side, back in 1896, to discover a more peacefull place in time. Really a good movie.

Netflix titles only please! I love recommendations of all varieties for sure, but I wanted to have a Netflix specific thread since so many of us have accounts there and because the library over there is ever changing and hard to keep up with and figure out which stuff is the good stuff.

Thank you all! Keep em coming!
Sorry, do you mean streaming netflix (they are constantly rotating)...ok, i just saw you mentioned this...sorry about that, I thought I read all the posts...I am not very good at "linear"

I swore I saw 13th Floor (at Avalon's recomendation) from there (though I do have access to friend's amazon prime account, maybe I'm mixed up)...the net says it's on netflix DVD....one of the better movies I have seen in a while:

One of those "I wasn't so sure about" movies I was pleasantly surprised with is called "Equilibrium"....I thought going in it could be horrible, it turned out pretty cool.

"There Will Be Blood" is great movie that just became available...and I find it interesting that about 50% of the newest flood of streaming releases is TED Talks, hmmmmm

PS - watch Microcosmos on the best possible shiny rectangle you can find...it is amazing to look at and a sh!tty tv will do it no justice
