    Maia,

I think there is more evidence to indicate the earth is round than flat. "Ships would always be sailing down hill" doesn't sound like good evidence against a round earth. "Plum bobs used to make sure walls are vertically straight mean that buildings would be wider at the top than the bottom if the earth is round" - this is true, but the maths would show you that the difference would be imperceptible so is a very weak argument again.

That was watching 1 minute of the video, so I think I am going to discount this particular piece of evidence for the earth being flat.

At the same time, I agree with mpennery that we are in dangerous territory if we discount topics because they are "obviously incorrect". Things will never change if we always accept what is "obviously correct".

    Just my opinion

    Regards,

    JC

I think the point is being missed here ... Maia proposed a hypothetical question about a topic we all think we are "absolutely sure of" because its been taught to us as fact, and it made her "wonder" if that perception could ever change if faced with "proof" … cold water was quickly thrown on her, which I found to be rude (surprisingly, there are many people who debate this, of which I had no idea until this topic was introduced)

If one is not sure if the earth is a globe then one should fly at a high altitude and observe the curvature of the horizon. If it is still in doubt buy a space plane ticket and really take a look. The theory that the earth is flat, is just that theory, now it needs prooving or dis-prooving just as all science does. Factual evidence of such is wanting and needed if it is to be entertained. I would hope we have moved beyond a 2D existance. IMHO

It doesn't sound like many of you would accept anything different from what you've been taught. Do we know everything already?

I've been wondering just how far the deceptions have gone. We know that our mainstream sciences are way behind that of the breakaway civilization.

I know looking at the other cosmic bodies that they're round; so, it's only logical to assume our planet is, too. I've been taught all this, too.

We're told Earth is unique. Her moon is, too. We know that the asteroid belt was once the planet Tiamat. Is it such a far stretch of the imagination to think that Earth and the Moon might just be "pieces" of that planet with gravity and all? Remember, we get our knowledge from the same source that controls it.

Would we all freak out if we knew our world was nothing like what it really is? Probably. So, it's better to just stay in denial because the truth and other possibilities might be so uncomfortable knowing....

There is a big difference between being taught and learning. Learning is acceptance to one's self, being taught is rote memory for acceptance.

Take the % of American who "believe" the Sun is orbiting Earth... Galileo almost got burnt at the stake for peanuts

... do "we" believe the Earth is orbiting the Sun? Or do "we" know it?

However, I would agree that many, first, "believe" what they are told about the Sun-Earth relationship before being convinced of it and, then, afterwards, "knowing" it.

I don't think that this is a subject that should be avoided at all. It's an interesting philosophical debate about the nature of reality and our role as participants and observers.

Quite honestly, I don't even think the earth (or all of its inhabitants) are even here. That is in the traditional sense. Is it wave/particle theory that would suggest that reality and even shared reality unfold as we perceive it?

As small children, we were given images of the earth as an orb. We were told. Would it be so difficult to consider that everything that we perceive is influenced by our mind's interpretation of what we expect it to be? Perhaps (and this is real navel gazing here) the Earth was truly flat until the concept of the sphere was introduced. I know its a stretch, but it is a great Philosophical exercise and Maia demonstrates the plasticity of her mind in considering all possibilities.

I don’t have time to summarize the article. But I will say that I just read and took notes on this only hours ago. One reason is because I’m re-evaluating this whole holographic game. Of late, I’m getting one synchronity after another, and experiencing this reality that shows me, “It’s all carnival and theater.”

Scientific American: “The Universe Really Is a Hologram, According to New Simulations”
    [article here]

"In 1997, theoretical physicist Juan Maldacena proposed that an audacious model of the Universe in which gravity arises from infinitesimally thin, vibrating strings could be reinterpreted in terms of well-established physics. The mathematically intricate world of strings, which exist in nine dimensions of space plus one of time, would be merely a hologram: the real action would play out in a simpler, flatter cosmos where there is no gravity."

    It's a Cookbook!!!

I assume people who think Earth is flat have never wondered why you can see further in distance the higher you are... R taken a flight with airpane. Or watched stream from from international space sation. Or...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizon

    Distance to the horizon[edit]
For an observer standing on the ground with h = 1.70 metres (5 ft 7 in) (average eye-level height), the horizon is at a distance of 4.7 kilometres (2.9 mi).
For an observer standing on the ground with h = 2 metres (6 ft 7 in), the horizon is at a distance of 5 kilometres (3.1 mi).
For an observer standing on a hill or tower of 100 metres (330 ft) in height, the horizon is at a distance of 36 kilometres (22 mi).
For an observer standing at the top of the Burj Khalifa (828 metres (2,717 ft) in height), the horizon is at a distance of 103 kilometres (64 mi).
For an observer atop Mount Everest (8,848 metres (29,029 ft) altitude), the horizon is at a distance of 336 kilometres (209 mi).

Ps. In reality there is nothing but energy in endless void.

I concur Dianna. Freedom of expression means everyone has a right to voice their opinion, even if it is wildly (and I emphasize wildly) counter-intuitive.

I haven't read all the reply's to Maia's OP, interesting post

First I agree with dianna's reply, we should all be able to post poderences here in Avalon, how ever Out-There they might be. It's the 'Out-There's' that I came here for It is those OP's that cause passable new ways of thinking as-well!

Now as to 'Is the Earth Flat' is it 'Hollow' do you and I actually exist, well I thought you all realized that the universe is one big 'Hologram'. it's all real, it's all illusion take your pick, it's all just sensory input to confine us!

If you look at the Earth from the macro, well it's all just an interrelating mass of individual lil bits of jiggling matter, all moving in and around.

As 'Fractals' it's an infinite unmeasurable, undefinable!

So which view point are we saying the Earth is round or is flat?

Personally my mind keeps warping outside this box, one day ill see it all fully or just lose the plot altogether Doh!

Ponder on this instead, from a 4D perspective a 3D object would appear to be flat but that would mean the entire universe not just the earth.
I'm not even going to get into the science as it has been sufficiently covered in previous posts nor will I go on a debunking rant of the arguments presented in the video. However with my personal experience as a pilot, land navigation survivalist, and knowing people who don't work for NASA and have circumnavigated the globe without running into any ice walls, I can guarantee you the earth is a sphere.

yes, but even so, if we live or ascribe to the holographic life, is this still true? food for thought.
