    Default Amazing Magnetic Levitation Device

I often wonder when we finally get around to figuring out all the possibilities of magnetic energy, force and power we will finally understand how UFOs are traversing the galaxies.

Will magnetic power hold the key to clean renewable inexpensive energy?

It has been my experience that the answers to the really big questions are in plain sight for everyone to see.

Only a matter of time before streets are made with this technology, and presto you have levitation style cars needing no oil, tires, shocks etc... All driven with free energy...

Lightbulb Re: Amazing Magnetic Levitation Device

Nice to see this being revived. I love these types of things cause they illustrate some great principles of magnetics, repulsion and feedback systems.

    Magnets are great.

I have had a "fully passive" system sitting in my office now for about 5 years, which requires no optical feedback, and no power and remains centered and levitating, defying gravity (but it comes from a concept called "field pinning"), that which isn't clearly spelled out by Crelev, pinning feedback for stability).

Here is some nice background to explain how this all happens:

1995 IEEE had a very brief article on using OPTICAL feedback to control where the opposing magnetic fields are applied.

Here is the "how". The key points are OPTICAL positioning feedback to control where the fields keep the object levitating, and the requirement of a lot of power to get adequate repulsion. (In other words, levitation comes at an expense of power to make the magnetic field in the control/transmitter at the base)..

"We report on a magnetic levitation device with electro‐optical feedback which allows for precise stabilization of the vertical position of the levitated piece (LP) within 1 μm. The vertical position of the LP is monitored through the reflection of a laser beam on a mirror placed in the upper part of the LP.

"The reflected beam goes to a position sensitive photodiode and suitable electronics transforms the fluctuations in the vertical position of the LP to an electrical signal. This signal is fed into a PID controller that drives an electromagnet.

"The output of the detection stage yields high‐precision measurements of the fluctuations in the vertical position of the device and the current fed to the electromagnet provides a precise reading of the vertical force felt by the levitating part.

"We have also developed a model that explains most of the dynamical behavior observed. We have formulated the dynamical equations of the system and, by means of a linear perturbation technique, we have obtained the stability characteristics which compare well with the experimental response. © 1995 American Institute of Physics. "

I don't think we are going to see vehicles floating around on the streets considering the amount of massive magnetic field that has to be expelled to create the repulsion, and some type of active computer control looking at somebody's transport vehicle. It's a great novelty, and can be used to create magnetic bearings..

Just some observations. Do it totally without power being needed and have the magnetics ONLY within the vehicle levitating, and then I think we would have something really impressive..

here is the link to the abstract: http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip...1063/1.1145397

Here are a couple more versions using the same concept:

This is the circuit typically used - a photo diode for positioning, and a field coil that is controlled. 4 of these and one has a platform which keeps centered a magnet above.

The Faraday floater, is able to do this without having to have a magnet in the floated object, something like aluminum or copper is where the bottom field is projected into the metal..

This one is particularly neat as a configuration, it can be operated right side up or inverted.

This has been one of my favorites, having a globe there floating "in space" - quite a conversation piece.

This page is kinda neat - "Floating toys for Children" - shows the OP's product in a different packaging:

    (webpage: http://hcnt.en.alibaba.com/product/8...tion_toys.html - suggested list US $ 10)

You can see how hard it would be to try to use this for anything other than "floating" a toy or display item. The object remains fixed or stuck in the middle of the lower magnetic coil (and has to stay within the feedback circuit's limits).

Here is another base configuration shown more in a picture format:

And lastly, here is another view of the innards of the base of one of these things..

I just love how these toys get people thinking about can we really do this on a mass scale.. when the energy consumption issues can be dealt with, how to keep things optically(?) feed back controlled, in theory the mag-lev system works.. In the mag-lev trains this is used to keep the Faraday effect working properly (for trains that use that method), else positioning feedback systems are needed to keep things centered.

For those interested in the Faraday effect, here is a good link. This shows the Faraday effect in action, creating a like but repulsive field in an aluminum ring - it's used to launch rings when the power is applied. (Also the basis for the more sinister use called the "rail gun" conceptually)..

Yes Bob "field pinning", every thing and every one, from the large to the small are the result of "field pinning"

In a sense we are already there. It only took about 100 years for us to begin to understand how to make practical use of magnetic levitation. You can only imagine what will happen in the next 100 years when we really begin to get a grasp of this amazing technology.

The idea of MAGLEV transportation has been around since the early 1900s. The benefit of eliminating the wheel/rail friction to obtain higher speeds and lower maintenance costs has great appeal. In Maglev—which is short for MAGnetic LEVitation—high speed vehicles are lifted by magnetic repulsion, and propelled along an elevated guideway by powerful magnets attached to the vehicle. The vehicles do not physically contact the guideway, do not need engines, and do not burn fuel. Instead, they are magnetically propelled by electric power fed to coils located on the guideway.

Compared to airplanes, which travel at similar speeds, Maglev moves passengers and freight at much lower cost, and in much greater volume. In addition to its enormous impact on transport, Maglev will allow millions of human beings to travel into space, and can move vast amounts of water over long distances to eliminate droughts.

Artist’s illustration of StarTram, a magnetically levitated low-pressure tube, which can guide spacecraft into the upper atmosphere.

Old, but good Paul LaViolette's interview. He talks about anti-gravity technology which has been hidden us at least for several decades.
