Cool Tesla Motors - All Our Patent Are Belong To You!

Awesome news from Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors today - they are releasing all of their patents to stimulate others to build similar products. A shining example of how things need to be done to make a difference in this world :-)

"Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters. That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology.

Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport. If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

WOW -- anyone else and I would think, April Fools is late!

    This is very inspirational news.

Elon has also pledged additional support towards building a proper museum at Wardenclyffe, after Matthew Inman @ theoatmeal.com published a request for assistance in the second part of his new comic about the joys of owning (and driving) a Tesla Model S --> http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla_model_s2

I just read the blog about this. That's a huge step forward. no we need to get the free energie running and all electric vehicles doesnt even ever need to get plugged in to recharge. I imagine even further - when the free energie is released they dont even will need batteries anymore.

It will be much easier to retrofit a battery powered car with free energy than a gasoline based one (practically impossible), so this is a huge step towards the future

    Maybe.,..

....depends on how freely the energy is accessed...and its flow rate. example if it only can produce a few watts continuous...then there will be need for some storage ability ...but is being charged continuously at a lower rate. good example is a solar array...and batteries that are charged....they then supply a charging current (much higher) to quickly charge the batteries in the vehicle... that is free but limited to the vehicles battery capacity..

....now if a sustainable reactor can produce enough convertible energy to power a sufficient motor at all times....even better......and the cost of reaction materials not be too great....the third example would be drawing energy from the 'ether' ie..quantum energy...what we are all hoping for.

....but both examples are of free energy.

I'd hope in the near future all cars are hybrids with a 100mpg efficiency. I think 20+ years before all cars are electric and maybe 40+ years before we see free energy devices.

How do you think Tesla will profit from releasing their patents.
They want to increase the infrastructure of the electric car industry and I expect hope to become the market leader, kind of the Mercedes Benz of electric cars. The larger car companies have patents of their own or have the finances to buy them off the large oil companies so will now have an advantage.

Unless they have some new patents of their own their company will be under threat. Unless the owner, a philanthropist doesn't care about his company?

Default Tesla Motors Makes Electric Car Patents Open Source

    Tesla Model S Sedan

In a bold move, Tesla Motors is making all the patents for the company's electric car technology free and available for anyone to use. In a blog entry posted today (June 12, 2014), Tesla founder and chief operating officer Elon Musk said the decision to share the company's patents was made "in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology."

"Tesla Motors was created to accelerate the advent of sustainable transport," Musk wrote in the blog post. "If we clear a path to the creation of compelling electric vehicles, but then lay intellectual property landmines behind us to inhibit others, we are acting in a manner contrary to that goal. Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology."

Musk, who also founded the commercial spaceflight company SpaceX, added that in the current world of rapidly evolving tech, patents often stifle the flow of progress. "Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world's most talented engineers," the trailblazing entrepreneur wrote.

By making Tesla's patents open source, Musk said he hopes to bolster the electric car industry, which is still heavily outmuscled by traditional car companies, and make strides in stemming harmful emissions that are contributing to global warming.

"Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world's factories every day," Musk wrote.

Good Guy Elon! I applaud his open heart.

It's not 'free energy' technology, of course, but it's a HUGE step forward in our struggle to rid ourselves of the internal combustion engine as a vehicle powerplant.

Elon Musk's vision and generosity is a revelation in the otherwise cut-throat world of capitalism. He's really not in it for the money. What a win for the planet!

Maybe being #1 at any cost or pure extreme profit are not his greatest motivations. How does that equate to not caring about his company? The way I see it, most companies become quickly morally and ethically bankrupt as soon as being "the biggest" and making "the most money" become sole motivations. I would see bringing a company to this state as more "not caring about the company" more than I would the other way around.

Great news indeed. And from Musk's point of view brilliant move: he sure must have more money than he can spend, and by releasing Tesla patents he is getting his name also in the history books as a good doer rather than just a filthy rich billionaire)

I'd like to see his Space X and Solar City project, team up with Robert Bigelow, Burt Rutan and Richard Branson, energy development, transportation in general and space exploration would get a boost like we have never seen before, the fortunes of these chaps could buy up bright minds at blinding speed and make it happen.

Here is an opportunity to reverse-engineer the "who killed the electric car" technology.

One of the tricks to the high peformance electric motor was 'advancing the brushes' like the vacuum advance on a distributor.

The fellow whom designed the EV in the above documentary is still alive. Its worth reviewing the above film for advice.

My electric motor is brushless, zero friction with amazing output.

I'm skeptical about this move, I don't think it's "what it seems" on the surface; there's probably a lot more depth here.

I'm sure there is a lot more going on below the surface. That's the way it tends to be in this kind of 'war'. And it is indeed a war.

So 'Gird Up' folks, this is war against big oil.

This is inception and inflection, where the dividing of the cell, with regard to time, really seriously counts. Input at the start counts more for speed, in time (how quickly a thing comes to be, in it's totality), than any given input near the end time of the 'unfolding'.

Like starting a bank account or savings account with a good interest rate. If, in the first few year or so..the funds are doubled, or trebled, deflected away from a given norm of self multiplication...then the final moment of passing over/past a given goal...that happens much faster, in the final analysis.

And the environment is on a big ass clock, one that is the size of the planet. Squeezing big oil out of the equation, it can't happen soon enough, due to a plethora of reasons that are too complex to get into here, in a single post.

    The actual note from Elon:
    Quote
All Our Patent Are Belong To You

Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters.

Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.

When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors. After Zip2, when I realized that receiving a patent really just meant that you bought a lottery ticket to a lawsuit, I avoided them whenever possible.

At Tesla, however, we felt compelled to create patents out of concern that the big car companies would copy our technology and then use their massive manufacturing, sales and marketing power to overwhelm Tesla. We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales.

At best, the large automakers are producing electric cars with limited range in limited volume. Some produce no zero emission cars at all.

Given that annual new vehicle production is approaching 100 million per year and the global fleet is approximately 2 billion cars, it is impossible for Tesla to build electric cars fast enough to address the carbon crisis. By the same token, it means the market is enormous. Our true competition is not the small trickle of non-Tesla electric cars being produced, but rather the enormous flood of gasoline cars pouring out of the world’s factories every day.

We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.

Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard.

As for the 2 billion cars that Elon speaks of.

2.85 billion fewer polluting cars on the road....for $60M

That is a real thread AND the technology functions AND it really is that inexpensive to get rid of THAT level of pollution.

To be done inside of 6 months, and far more done inside of a year (doubled). To end all coal fired pollution inside of a few years. A few $billion later, and no more power plant pollution, period. All still up and running... but they would not longer pollute, at all.

But first, sixty million US dollars and about 6 months of simple work, gets you 2.85 billion less cars on the road, pollution wise.

Yet it is not being done.

The thread is 1,000 percent serious. Many many Hundreds to the low thousands of people have shown that the technology ...

    WORKS.

If you are not getting angry yet, you should be.

If you are not acting yet (getting physically involved in a real directed sense), you should be.
