Will Elon Musk fund a Nikola Tesla museum?

    By Elizabeth Landau, CNN
updated 5:12 PM EDT, Wed May 14, 2014 | Filed under: Social Media

(CNN) -- Inventor Nikola Tesla may have died alone and broke, but he has powerful friends who want to preserve his legacy.

Cartoonist Matthew Inman, the brain behind "The Oatmeal," is one. Using his popular web comic, Inman launched an effort to turn Tesla's former laboratory in Shoreham, New York, into a museum.

Tesla, who lived from 1856 to 1943, developed the basis for AC power, among other ideas and innovations that have shaped our lives. He obtained more than 100 patents, according to the Tesla Memorial Society of New York. Inman partnered with the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, a nonprofit group, to generate widespread interest in a museum.

The cartoonist sang the inventor's praises in a humorous, profane comic hailing Tesla as superior to the better-known Thomas Edison ("Basically, Tesla = Nicest. Inventor. EVER," Inman wrote).

Through the crowdfunding website Indiegogo, the nonprofit and Inman stirred up more than $1.3 million in 2012, when the facility and land were put up for sale.

That was enough money to save the property, but not quite what was needed to renovate it for an actual museum.

From grains of 'Oatmeal,' big things for cartoonist

So this week Inman turned to a man who has become a household name in his own right: Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, which is named for the inventor.

Inman published an Oatmeal comic called "What it's like to own a Tesla Model S," bursting with enthusiasm about owning the electric car, and then appealed to Musk in a second installment.

"Elon Musk, if you're reading this: You owe us nothing, and you've done nothing but good things in the name of Nikola Tesla," Inman wrote in his endearing handwriting-esque typeface. "But the fact remains: Tesla Motors, a company now worth billions, is using Nikola Tesla's name and they're using his technology, and all we want in return is a little bit of help."

Inman wrote that automobiles have AC induction motors and bear the Tesla name, despite the fact that no one from Nikola Tesla's family was involved in founding the car company. According to the Tesla Memorial Society of New York, Nikola Tesla invented the AC induction motor, which he sold to Westinghouse in 1888.

"But the idea of a car company using someone else's family name without any formal connection to them is a slightly arresting notion," Inman wrote. "It would be like naming a company 'Steve Jobs Hoverbikes' 50 years from now, regardless of any ties to Apple or Jobs himself."

During the initial fundraiser for the museum, Musk donated $2,500, Inman wrote. But what the Tesla Museum would need to open, he said, is another jolt of $8 million.

Inman tweeted Tuesday "@elonmusk I wrote a review of my Model S, and then asked you for a little favor here [link]."

To the delight of many Twitter users, Musk tweeted back: "@Oatmeal I would be happy to help."

Of course, we don't know if "help" means the full $8 million or much less.

A spokesperson for Musk's Tesla Motors told CNN, "I can't confirm the amount that Elon will donate, his Tweet is standing alone for official comment. I can confirm that he agreed to it."

But for fans of Tesla's work and legacy, the possibility is electrifying.

Quote Additional notes from the author:

If you want to learn more about Tesla, I highly recommend reading Tesla: Man Out of Time
Also, this Badass of the week by Ben Thompson is what originally inspired me to write a comic about Tesla. Ben's also got a book out which is packed full of awesome.
There's an old movie from the 80s on Netflix Instant Queue right now about Tesla: The Secret of Nikola Tesla. It's corny and full of bad acting, but it paints a fairly accurate depiction of his life.
The drunk history of Tesla is quite awesome, too.
History.com has a great article about Edison and how his douchebaggery had a chokehold on American cinema.
X-rays: just to clarify, Tesla did not discover x-rays, but he was one of the early pioneers in its research.
Cryogenic engineering: I'm referring to the cryogenic engineering that has to do with using liquified air to cool a coil and reduce its electrical resistance (Patent No. 11,865), not freezing people and waking them up in the future so they can fight Wesley Snipes.
Transistor: Tesla's influence on the modern transistor can be found in patents 723,188 and 725,605. (a better explanation here)
Radio: Tesla was the nicest geek ever until he decided to sue Marconi a few years later. 8 months after Tesla died, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Marconi's patents on the invention of radio. So Tesla eventually won that battle, although he was dead by then.
Tesla VS Edison: I could write a novel on the differences between Tesla and Edison, but seeing as how this comic is already huge I decided to leave many things out. For instance, Edison killed cats and dogs, but Tesla loved animals and had a cat as a child. Originally Tesla wanted to be a poet, but after getting zapped by static electricity from his kitty he was inspired to study the effects of electricity. One could vaguely construe that Tesla's cat was responsible for the second industrial revolution, which arguably makes it the most awesome cat who ever lived.
Edison believed that fossil fuels were the future and that there were enough resources in South America to provide for the next 50,000 years. Tesla believed that renewable energy sources like hydroelectric, solar, and wind power were the future. This is remarkable because in the 1890s there was no such thing as "going green," so Tesla's ideas on conservation were very forward-thinking at the time.
Lastly, a big thank you to Jane C. Daugherty for proofreading this article for me. If you want to learn things from the most awesome librarian this side of the North American tectonic plate, follow her on Twitter.

Let's Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum
We're trying to raise money to buy back Nikola Tesla's old laboratory, known as the Wardenclyffe Tower, and eventually turn it into a museum.

Quote Nikola Tesla was the father of the electric age. Despite having drop-kicked humanity into a second industrial revolution, up until recently he's been an unsung hero in history books. If you don't know who Tesla is, go read this.

Tesla's final laboratory is located in the sleepy town of Shoreham, New York. It's known as Wardenclyffe and it's where Tesla attempted to build a tower that would provide free wireless energy to the entire earth. Unfortunately, Tesla lost his funding before the project was completed and in 1917 the Wardenclyffe tower was demolished. Subsequently, the land was sold to a film and paper manufacturer.

However, the land, laboratory, and foundation beneath the tower are still there and very recently went up for sale. And right now a non-profit is trying to buy the property and turn it into a Nikola Tesla Museum. The property is listed at $1.6 million, and this non-profit has received a matching grant from New York State of up to $850k. This means that if we can raise $850k, New York State will match us for that same amount -- putting the total raised at $1.7 million.

There is currently another offer on the table from someone who wants to purchase the property potentially tear it down or turn it into a retail establishment. There is no Tesla museum in the United States, despite Tesla's extraordinary accomplishments. If we can outbid this other person and buy the land it will permanently be protected as a historic site and eventually converted into a Nikola Tesla Science Center.

The folks behind this project are a 501(c) non-profit organization and they've spent the past 15 years trying to find a way to save this property. This IndieGoGo account is linked directly to their bank and all the funds will go directly to them.

Even if we raise the full amount and end up with $1.7 million, this isn't enough to build an actual museum / science center. But it will effectively put the property into the right hands so it can eventually be renovated into something fitting for one of the greatest inventors of our time.

Internet, this is where you come in: HELP ME BUILD A GODDAMN TESLA MUSEUM.

More details about the campaign can be found over here.

The Indiegogo campaign is linked directly to the bank account of Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe, formerly known as Friends of Science East, Inc. It is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization registered with the State of New York.

Topic: BAE Systems - bribes - Prince Bandar - 9/11 attacks (Read 89725 times)

Quote Remember, that the real story behind the BAE "Al Yamamah" scandal is that, under the arms-for-oil barter deal, the British accumulated well-over $100 billion, in off-the-books, offshore funds, that have been used to finance covert operations, for the past 23 years (the deal was first signed in 1985, and has been regularly updated ever since).

The other nagging matter around the BAE case is that Prince Bandar "inadvertently" helped finance the 9/11 attacks, through funds provided by him and his wife to two Saudi intelligence operative in California, who, in turn, bankrolled two of the hijackers. This sordid tale is spelled out in Philip Shenon's admirable expose of the 9/11 Commission investigation, in the 2008 book, The Commission--The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation.

BAE: secret papers reveal threats from Saudi prince
    [url]http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/15/bae.armstrade%5b/url]
Quote Saudi Arabia's rulers threatened to make it easier for
terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into
their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed
    yesterday.

Previously secret files describe how investigators were told they
faced "another 7/7" and the loss of "British lives on British
streets" if they pressed on with their inquiries and the Saudis
carried out their threat to cut off intelligence.

Prince Bandar, the head of the Saudi national security council, and
son of the crown prince, was alleged in court to be the man behind
the threats to hold back information about suicide bombers and
terrorists. He faces accusations that he himself took more than £1bn
in secret payments from the arms company BAE.

He was accused in yesterday's high court hearings of flying to London
in December 2006 and uttering threats which made the prime minister,
Tony Blair, force an end to the Serious Fraud Office investigation
into bribery allegations involving Bandar and his family.

The threats halted the fraud inquiry, but triggered an international
outcry, with allegations that Britain had broken international anti-
    bribery treaties.

Lord Justice Moses, hearing the civil case with Mr Justice Sullivan,
said the government appeared to have "rolled over" after the threats.
He said one possible view was that it was "just as if a gun had been
held to the head" of the government.

The SFO investigation began in 2004, when Robert Wardle, its
director, studied evidence unearthed by the Guardian. This revealed
that massive secret payments were going from BAE to Saudi Arabian
    princes, to promote arms deals.

Yesterday, anti-corruption campaigners began a legal action to
overturn the decision to halt the case. They want the original
investigation restarted, arguing the government had caved into
    blackmail.

The judge said he was surprised the government had not tried to
persuade the Saudis to withdraw their threats. He said: "If that
happened in our jurisdiction [the UK], they would have been guilty of
a criminal offence". Counsel for the claimants said it would amount
to perverting the course of justice.

Wardle told the court in a witness statement: "The idea of
discontinuing the investigation went against my every instinct as a
prosecutor. I wanted to see where the evidence led."

But a paper trail set out in court showed that days after Bandar flew
to London to lobby the government, Blair had written to the attorney
general, Lord Goldsmith, and the SFO was pressed to halt its
    investigation.

The case officer on the inquiry, Matthew Cowie, was described by the
judge as "a complete hero" for standing up to pressure from BAE's
lawyers, who went behind his back and tried to secretly lobby the
attorney general to step in at an early stage and halt the
    investigations.

The campaigners argued yesterday that when BAE failed at its first
attempt to stop the case, it changed tactics. Having argued it should
not be investigated in order to promote arms sales, it then recruited
ministers and their Saudi associates to make the case that "national
security" demanded the case be covered up.

p.s. anyone else think the Naval Yard shooting was supposed to happen 5 days sooner but the kid wouldn't break?

Quote The Washington Navy Yard shooting occurred on September 16, 2013, when lone gunman Aaron Alexis fatally shot twelve people and injured three others in a mass shooting at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) inside the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington, D.C.[6][7][8] The attack, which took place in the Navy Yard's Building 197, began around 8:20 a.m. EDT and ended when Alexis was killed by police around 9:20 a.m. EDT.

It was the second-deadliest mass murder on a U.S. military base, behind only the Fort Hood shooting in November 2009.
"According to an FBI official after the shooting, Alexis was under "the delusional belief that he was being controlled or influenced by extremely low frequency electromagnetic waves""

    Good news!

Quote So, I had a call with Elon Musk earlier this week ...

As some of you may know, I recently published a cartoonist's review of my Tesla Model S. In the second half of the review, I asked Elon Musk to donate toward the completion of a Nikola Tesla Museum, a project I've been working on since 2012.

Within a few hours of posting my review, Elon Musk tweeted that he'd be happy to help. Earlier this week I got to speak to the man directly, and he promised two things.

    1. He's going to build a Tesla Supercharger station in the parking lot of the museum.

    2. He's donating $1 million dollars to the museum itself.

Elon Musk: from the deepest wells of my geeky little heart: thank you. This is amazing news. And it's Nikola Tesla's 158th birthday.

    Happy Nikola Tesla Day.
