Question Re: Safest Alternatives to Antibiotics?

Thank you all for your helpful replies, for myself and others. It was a long night but finally symptoms have come down due to the steroids and antihistamines. I am not going to take any nutrition supplements as we do not know for sure what caused the reaction although it seems most likely to be the antibiotics that I was on (Nitrofurantoin) and/or a drug nutrient/interaction. I read online that Magesium can react with it (make it less effective or over active, and so to avoid taking them together, but I did take them on the same days as I did not know not to). I don't want people to be too scared to not take an antibiotic if they really need one and there is no better option for them at the time. But I would suggest to be careful about drug/nutrient or drug/drug interactions, or to be aware of the risks when taking one that you have not taken before.

I was also taking Nascent Iodine for a week and a half and just uped the dose 3 days before the reaction and started taking B12 under the tongue the day before the reaction. I am going to ask the doctor for allergy tests so I can be sure what caused it. Now that I have had this allergic reaction (and I was lucky it was caught in time and not worse) I have been told to carry antihistamines with me always. They priscribed a more usually well tolerated antibiotic before called Trimethoprim for 3 days and it didn't work, so then the doctor put me on one that I never took before...and the reaction occured on the 4th day of taking it.

I'm sick of being sick and want to be fit and healthy, and it looks like I am going to have to have a super healthy very nutrient dence diet as I cannot take supplements at the mo. My Princess slow juicer arrived yesterday (recommended by my friend 778) and I just have a feeling that having some fresh juice everyday is going to help me.

Amethyst , if you were taking Nitrofurantoin for urinary type of infection then cranberry juice ( 100% pure juice, available from pharmacies ) is told to be the best option ,
mum tried that many times and she said it works much better than antibiotic . They also have cranberry extract in capsules , like these :

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...d_i=B000LNCB8K

But you'll probably find more brands of them in your local pharmacy . They have to be taken over a course of time - 4 to 6 weeks is recommended but they reportedly show symptom reduction as early as in 3 days and from what I've heard , the inflammation does not reoccur after full course of treatment ( which tends to be the case when antibiotic is used , for chronic infections ) .

I'm not sure about the use of iodine ( you'd have to check with your allergologist ) as it can cause severe allergy reactions with certain people ( and not with others ) ,
so unless you know you are NOT specifically allergic to iodine you should not keep taking it .
And even in case that you can tolerate small amounts of iodine , it may cause allergy in higher doses , with prolonged use so I'd advice to be careful.

Also , with urinary infection/problems you should have very mild diet - no spices , and no sour or unripe fruits or vegetables , no red meat , fish or egg , till symptoms subside .

Sorry to hear that but hope you get better ..

Just to reinforce what many have already said: Oregano oil, olive leaf, colloidal silver, pau d arco, oregon grape root and clove tincture are the six I use the most to kill infection. If its a mild infection I use one of them. If its more serious, I combine them. Recently a friend called with a golf ball size swelling from an abscess tooth. I mixed the tinctures with the colloidal silver. 2 days later the swelling was almost completely gone. In this case she took it internally and applied it directly to the swelling with a cotton ball jammed right next to the tooth. While using these elements, taking probiotics would be important as, like anti biotics, they tend to kill the beneficial bacteria as well. Higher doses of probiotic foods or supplements will also elevate immune function. When experiencing an infection, eliminating all sugar, including fruit is a good idea for sugar reduces immune function significantly. Something like a 50% immune suppression for 4 hours after ingesting sugar. One of the best elements I've seen for uti is corn silk. Ive seen it work when nothing else would.

See the thread "Especially for Women," my post #62, for a very inexpensive herbal tea that knocks out of urinary tract infections FAST.

(Sorry I'm a techtard and don't know how to give you the link.)

I had cystitis repeatedly for many years until I discovered this "magical" tea. Don't miss it!

Concerning cranberry juice and uti; cranberry prevents infection from adhereing to the ut wall and with continued use the infection is eliminated.

As mentioned previously; fermented foods (specifically sauerkraut) is as effective as antibiotics.

Honey is not that good for this kind of inflamation. Propolis is much better.
But as it is against my philosophy, I don't take any animal sourced products. to avoid suffering of the animals.

I heard that honey is quite antibiotic, maybe you could consume some and see if that helps.

Don't forget MMS. It works great for me and my family, whenever we have an infection or a cold. Antibiotics kill all bacteria, the 'good' (aerobic) ones and the 'bad' (anaerobic)ones. MMS draws a distinction between them. I too, thank all of you for all the suggestions, I have to try something new next time.

You may have also heard of 'Manuka honey' , produced in Australia and New Zealand that has ( its 'higher grades' ) purportedly high antibacterial properties .

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mānuka_honey

Quote Mānuka honey is a monofloral honey produced in New Zealand and Australia from the nectar of the mānuka tree. Honey has demonstrated antibacterial properties in vitro, but there is no conclusive evidence of benefit in medical use. It is classified under therapeutic goods in Australia

I've inquired about it but never tried , it's quite expensive here . And ... some people are allergic to bee products as well .

Could be tasty remedy though ..

Specifically for UTI/bladder/kidney: 90% of infections are caused by E-coli. The substance in cranberry juice that works against E-coli is D-mannose. The D-mannose latches on to E-coli and then carries it out of the body. So, taking a tsp. of D-mannose every hour or so is way more effective than cranberry juice.

Several people have included garlic in the list, but nothing has been said about specifically how It might be taken. First, it must be raw, since cooking destroys the medicinal value. Second, if it's for a pretty serious infection, then a pretty serious amount needs to be consumed. One way it can be gotten down, is to take an entire bulb of garlic (many cloves), put the individual cloves into a blender with 1/2 cup of water, blend until totally liquified, then put into fridge. Juice carrots to make an eight ounce glass of carrot juice, add a TBSP of the garlic mix, swallow fast, follow instantly with bread to put out the volcano in the stomach, repeat multiple times until garlic is gone. Repeat daily until no longer sick. Don't go near humans for several days until garlic smell is gone from skin. It works for pretty serious stuff, but is not for the faint hearted, lol.

What kind of antibiotics was it? Sulpha?

    Quote Posted by Amethyst (here)
Today I got a severe (delayed) allergic reaction to antibiotics that I have been taking for 3 days. It started with a red itchy rash on my elbows, then a bigger rash (hives) developed on my right hip and forehead, and then left hip and a few other places...and got bigger with time, and my eyes swelled up one at a time and so I went to the doctor who told me to stop the antibiotics and all supplements and to take steroids and anti histamines straight away. I am ok now, as symptoms have not got worse.

I do not want to take antibiotics again if I can help it (this was my first allergic reaction to an antibiotic).

What safer more natural alternatives to antibiotics have you used for infections that has worked? (including urine infections which was what I was prescribed them for). Is there any scientific evidence that they have worked well and are safe (for most people at least)?

    Thank you.

Oh, I use a supplement (tablet) of concentrated cranberry, instead of the juice, as the pure stuff, no sugar is kinda expensive. and the concentrate pills work quick!
all in all, a time for balancing and maybe cleaning out. a gentle detox. very gentle. god goddess bless I know its tough.

Hi, Amethyst, I understand your impatience to regain your feeling of health again but I want to jump in and warn against mixing all these alternative methods.

Depending on your health there are herbs/others that natural though they may be could end up causing you more harm. Some for instance don't go with high blood pressure, others don't go with low blood pressure. Some increase estrogen levels, which is not advised for breast cancer patients, and if your sugar level is already too low, best not add cinammon.

All these suggestions may be appealing to you because they are more natural and just different from what you get at the hospital but remember that they are not necessarily less dangerous if you throw all of them randomly on a to-do list.

    Please, be patient.

    And here it is!

    Quote CYSTITIS HERBAL TEA

    Boil 3 cups of water.
    Turn down heat to simmer.
    Add 1 Tablespoon echinacea.
    Cover.
    Simmer 20 minutes.
    Remove from heat.

Add 1 1/2 tsps of Herb Mix:
    Herb Mix:
    1 1/2 teaspoons juniper berries
    1 Tablespoon yarrow flowers
    1 Tablespoon uva ursi
1 Tablespoon cornsilk (or 8 drops of cornsilk extract)
    Stir.
    Cover.
    Let steep for 15 minutes.

Drink 1 cup each day for 10-14 days.

Pain will probably subside quickly (within two days), but you MUST
keep drinking the tea for 10-14 days in order to kill the infection.

This tea has worked for people (men, too) who had bladder infections for
as long as six months (!) and were getting nowhere with pharmaceuticals,
    so don't despair. Try it!

    Peace Love Joy & Harmony,
    Genevieve

I've taken the advice of taking pure unsweetened cranberry juice and D-Mannose, I bought some today (btw, my body is still reacting a week and a half after I took my last antibiotic pill, and I'm still on anti histamines - 3 different types it was that severe - I'm still getting milder rashes popping up that disappear after medication - never again will I take an antibiotic unless it is truly needed and the best option).

I made a short video about it

This may be for someone else's perusal than yours but since antibiotic resistance is important topic and there are many friends I know of who had been affected with difficult to get rid of stems of staphylococcus aureus ( known as the methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus - MRSA ) this recent discovery could be useful :

    https://uk.news.yahoo.com/scientists...8.html#rsFnW4i

    Scientists Develop Alternative To Antibiotics

Scientists have developed a highly effective alternative to antibiotics which can destroy bacteria in seconds.
The drug, called Staphefekt, is based on a naturally-occurring enzyme that side-steps the defence mechanisms that superbugs have evolved to fight off traditional antibiotics.
It is already available in Holland and Germany as a cream to treat skin infections such as acne, but researchers hope to develop a tablet form of the drug within five years to treat serious infections.
Mark Offerhaus, chief executive of Dutch firm Micreos, told Sky News that bacteria are unlikely to evolve resistance to the treatment.
"(It) will drill holes in the bacterial cell wall from the outside," he said.
"This goes really fast, in a matter of seconds. There is no time to develop resistance. This is a really important day in the history of antimicrobial treatment."
Overuse of antibiotics has led to a growing problem of drug resistance.
Around 5,000 patients a year die from once treatable infections and Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that the rise of superbugs could take medicine "back to the dark ages".
Staphefekt uses an enzyme called endolysin, which is found in viruses that attack bacteria.
Studies on small numbers of patients have confirmed it can eradicate Staphylococcus Aureus - the species of bacteria that includes MRSA.
But scientists at a London summit on antibiotic resistance warned that proven treatments need to be used with care until new drugs come on stream - with GPs set tough targets to reduce prescribing.
Jayne Lawrence, chief science advisor to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: "GPs are going to have to explain more carefully to patients why in some cases they won't be given an antibiotic because they don't really need it.
"Alternatively, they might be given a prescription that is post-dated so it can't be used for a few days - the idea is to check the patient has an infection that needs the antibiotic."
