    Default Question about Essiac

Is anyone familiar with Essiac Tea? I have started taking it over the weekend for improving overall health reasons, not to treat anything specifically.

I'm told it has many benefits including combating very early stages of cancer.

Just asking if anyone is familiar with it.

The ingredients include: Blessed Thistle, Burdock root, kelp, red clover, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark, Turkish rhubarb root and watercress.

I listed them in case people are using a different product with similar properties.

Thanks for any and all feedback.

    Default Re: Question about Essiac

There is an incredible amount of disinformation on the internet about Essiac tea. It is because people don't take the time to do the research. That is the incorrect Essiac formula. Rene Caisse, the lady who created the four-herb Essiac formula from the original 8-herb native american formula, never used blessed thistle or kelp. Those were later additions by Dr. Brusch and Elaine Alexander. So Flor-Essence and other 8-herb teas are not Essiac. Rene Caisse never told anyone what the original 8th herb was. She did tell her best friend, Mary McPherson, what seven of those herbs were. However, for over fifty years Rene Caisse experimented with mice and used it on many cancer patients in her clinic and she found that the formula only needed four herbs to work. However, she kept the formula secret, except for a very few trusted friends. Here is a website that has the most and best documentation on Essiac tea. Mary McPherson finally revealed the formula in this affidavit and Rene Caisse's other friend, Sheila Snow, has conducted the most research on Essiac. Sheila Snow discovered through letters from the Sloan-Kettering Cancer center that sheep sorrel root is a "very essential" part of the formula. Sheep sorrel roots are bitter and are not anything like the leaves.

Therefore, if the tea does not contain sheep sorrel roots along with sheep sorrel leaf, burdock root, slippery elm bark and turkey rhubarb (and only those herbs) it is technically not Essiac tea.

Most people only think of Essiac tea in relation to cancer. However, it is truly a foundational, health-giving tea. It does much more than help with cancer. It detoxifies, boosts the immune system, helps to normalize bowel movements, helps the liver, pancreas, bladder, lungs, skin, etc. One should not wait until one gets cancer to take the tea. It is actually a cancer preventive (along with the aforementioned benefits).

Actually, the link you gave is to a website that sells a fraudulent version of Essiac tea and that is not the correct way to make it. Here is the link to the correct formula and how to make it correctly according to Rene Caisse's own specifications as has been officially recorded in the Town of Bracebridge, Ontario in the 1994 affidavit by Mary McPherson, the only person that Rene Caisse allowed to make the tea for her patients. Rene Caisse personally taught Mary McPherson how to make the tea in Rene's home. This affidavit is the only valid and legal documentation of the correct Essiac formula. If one scrolls down to the bottom of the web page with the affidavit, one can read what the correct herbs and proportions are and how to make it.

    Fraudulent version of Essiac tea?

Because the tea I bought has eight ingredients instead of the necessary 4 Rene Caisse allegedly used?

In making the tea, the only difference I see is simmering the tea after 12 hours of steeping.

Not sure why they say not to re heat, but I can incorporate that into the recipe if needed.

    Thanks

    Default Re: Question about Essiac

Yes, Rene Caisse never used "blessed thistle" or "kelp". Those herbs were added by Dr. Brusch without Rene Caisse's knowledge or permission. In fact, Rene Caisse emphatically stated that she never gave the formula to Dr. Brusch. Because Rene Caisse's tea gained so much attention people wanted to jump on the bandwagon and cash in on the publicity by coming out with a different version of herbs and calling it "Essiac" or like Elaine Alexander, saying it was Rene Caisse's formula but giving it a different name (i.e., Flor-Essence). Elaine Alexander found out about some of the herbs from Dr. Gary Glum after he bought the formula and released it publicly. BTW, Elaine Alexander died of cancer.

Rene Caisse only used those four herbs because they had a specific synergistic effect on cancer patients. She experimented with the Essiac formula for over 50 years so she knew what worked. No one else has ever done that. Here is a web page that documents how the four herbs work synergistically vis-a-vis cancer.

I have been using and studying herbs and making herbal teas since the early 70s and I know how important it is to stick to the tried and true formulas that actually work. Also, the eight ingredients you referred to do not include sheep sorrel ROOTs. Rene Caisse stated in her letters to Dr. Chester Stock at the Sloan Kettering Cancer center that sheep sorrel roots are "very essential" to the formula. Here is a web page that shows an actual photocopy of that letter.

The actual Essiac formula has been a matter of public record (legal affidavit under oath) since 1994 and it is easily accessed on the internet so no one can plead ignorance to not knowing what the actual formula is. It is indisputable. It is not an "alleged" formula. As an ethical herbalist I have researched this point very thoroughly as I was also initially confused about the formula due to all the disinformation on the internet from people who valued money more than ethics. The aforementioned affidavit is the only legal proof of the Essiac formula and no one has provided any other legal evidence that refutes it. This formula was also independently verified by Dr. Gary Glum who purchased the same formula from one of Rene's patients. The said affidavit was later filed revealing that Dr. Glum had the correct formula. Therefore, from a legal point of view it is fraud to sell any other formula of herbs and call it "Essiac". For example, if I assembled a computer, called it an "Apple" computer and started selling them, I could be sued very successfully by Apple (TM) computers. Unfortunately, Rene Caisse is no longer alive to defend herself. She devoted her life to helping people with Essiac, not to make money, but because she truly cared. It is also very unethical to misrepresent the "Essiac" formula because it adversely affects cancer patients who need the correct formula. Of course, it is impossible to determine how many cancer patients died because they bought the incorrect herbs from deceptive, unethical people who fraudulently labeled their herbs "Essiac" just so they can make a buck.

If you want to learn about Rene Caisse and the real Essiac tea, there are some excellent books available that provide factual documentation, such as THE ESSENCE OF ESSIAC and ESSIAC ESSENTIALS. If you want to know what other herbs Rene Caisse used ESSIAC, THE SECRETS OF RENE CAISSE'S HERBAL PHARMACY is an excellent book. These books were written and researched by Sheila Snow, one of Rene Caisse's best friends. Sheila Snow even collected (wild-harvested) Essiac tea herbs for Rene Caisse to be given to her cancer patients. Sheila was also the person who found out about sheep sorrel roots being a necessary part of the Essiac formula because she obtained Rene Caisse's letters to the Sloan Kettering Cancer center directly from Dr. Chester Stock.

Thank you so much TC and Olam for your responses.

I have inquired of the manufacturer about the sheep sorrel root and they said:
"Yes, of course. That is the only way the tea will be most effective."

Truman, I have heard of people using this blend of tea that have gone cancer free for years, so that is why I chose it.

If you know of another Essiac maker that is true to the 4 ingredients pls pass it along.

I do appreciate your passion and knowledge on this topic.

I currently make my own Essiac tea as sheep sorrel grows wild in my area. However, I did use the herbs provided by Essiac West, an Idaho company. They sell the four herbs in the right proportions with sheep sorrel roots and the roots are harvested separately so they can make it with 10% or 20% sheep sorrel roots. The tea tasted right and looked right. The tea was the right color of green.

I've gotten sheep sorrel powder from Star West, a California company, before and it was gray. Very poor quality. I've also seen that brand on health food store shelves and it is always poor quality. So I would not recommend Star West. The color of sheep sorrel powder indicates chlorophyll content and it should be very green, even dark green if possible. (However, I should note that sheep sorrel roots are not green so that can change the color of the mixture depending upon the quantity of root in relation to leaf.) Sheep sorrel leaf should be harvested in early spring before the flower stalks form, when the leaves are nice and green. Sheep sorrel roots should be harvested after the first frosts in the fall for maximum strength.

I have found that Mountain Rose Herbs is a reliable source of herbs to make it yourself, but unfortunately they do not sell sheep sorrel roots. I do not know of any company that sells sheep sorrel roots separately due to the high cost of labor to manually trim the roots from the tops. However, you can always buy the seeds from Horizon herbs (they also have Turkey rhubarb seeds) and grow your own sheep sorrel roots. You should wait until the fall of the second year to harvest the roots.

    Best Wishes,
    Truman

Do you know Buffalo are fairly resistant to cancers? A myth to think they don't get it but not like most mammals. Some people dismiss this because they have a 20 to 25 year life span but dogs get plenty of cancers with a much shorter lifespan.

What do Buffalo eat? I know they eat clover and sheep sorrel (root and all, meaning the whole plant) and sugar maple or apple tree bark so not a leap to think slippery elm bark?

Attempts have been made to try to develop a vaccine and as far as I know they've been all failures. Like sharks they have a lot of cartilage so people have tried to make that connection but that hasn't been too fruitful. And a couple of enzymes have been identified in the Buffalo that may be factors involved as well.

Understanding that the immune system lies in the gut is a necessary connection to make.

A quick search tells me they eat green grasses and wasn't very productive. What do They choose to eat not what We feed them?

As far as I know, no one else has made this connection. So I am sharing. I made this connection only a couple of years ago and have only shared this with a few friends and relatives. But I am going to freely put it out there. It may be meaningless seeing how I have a 70 percent success rate.

Buffalo don't drink tea but they may be eating the plants that are similar to what's in Essiac tea. Throw in vitamin C in rosehip and essential fatty acids in those green grasses and maybe that's why their immune systems work better. Just a thought ....thinking out loud.

I may as well throw my 2 cents in here.

I started taking 1 oz per day of essiac about 3 years ago for prostate problems and have been much happier with the outcome than my urologist. I have good health but he didn't get to do surgery. I order it from Mali Klein's renecaissetea.com. They use 65% root whole herb organic Sheep Sorrel and Rene's other 3 original ingredients. They sell a seed kit so that you can grow your own. They also have a couple of very good books archival based written by Sheila Snow and Mali Klein including The Complete Essiac Essentials. Follows is a paragraph from it's intro. The Complete Essiac Essentials is written from a first-hand perspective. Co-author Sheila Snow was part of Rene Caisse's 'inner circle' in her later years. Sheila also had a long-time close friendship with another member of the 'inner circle,' Rene's ally and helper, Mary McPherson. Mary was the only person Rene Caisse is known to have allowed to be present when she made the decoction. The authors have gone to 'the source' for this book, in no small way.

I hope you find this helpful
