    Default Bruce Lee’s Teachings

Five of Bruce Lee’s Teachings that will Change Your Life

Bruce Lee was an inspiration to many people. Through his movies he not only entertained us but also taught us about a new way of living. “Be Like Water” is probably his best-known advice to young men and women who aspire to reach his level of success. In this article, we’ll share some of his brilliant quotes which give you a new insight on living your life. The following teachings, if applied into your daily activities, will bring about massive changes in your life.
    Be Water, My Friend!

    Empty your mind
    Be formless, shapeless
    Like water
Now you put water into a cup
    It becomes the cup
You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle
You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot
Now water can flow or it can crash
    Be water my friend

    Let Go of The Past
To express yourself in freedom, you must die to everything of yesterday. From the “old,” you derive security; from the “ new,” you gain the flow.

Many people cling to their past all their life. Being identified with that past gives them a safe feeling. They think that they are their past no matter how good or how bad it is. This saves them the trouble of facing the real world and the situations of the present moment. However, the moment one ceases to identify oneself with that old being, one unlocks a new way of living. A living that is not only free but also open to powerful new ideas. You are not your past. Everything you are starts and ends right here, in the present moment.
Alan Watts - Living in the present (boat analogy)

    Be Single Minded
The fighter is to always be single-minded with one object in view—to fight, looking neither backward nor sideways. He must get rid of obstructions to his forward movement, emotionally, physically or intellectually.

Get rid of all distractions so that you can focus only on your goal. Right now, there may be many obstacles standing between you and your goal. Focusing on your obstacles will lengthen your journey; instead, focus single-mindedly on your goal and you will reach it faster.
    Cultivate Simplicity
The height of cultivation runs to simplicity. Halfway cultivation runs to ornamentation. In combative arts, it has been the problem of ripening. This ripening is the progressive integration of the individual with his being, his essence. This is possible only through self-exploration in free expression and not in imitative repetition of an imposed pattern of movement.

Cultivation, by definition, is the process of trying to acquire or develop a quality or skill. All skills, be it playing a guitar or writing, are tools for self expression. By merely imitating techniques you maybe able to “mimic” a seasoned artist, but you won’t be able to completely master the skill unless you’re one with the art itself. Thus, to master a skill or an art completely, you have to know yourself fully and then express that knowing of yourself through that art or skill  In a seasoned artist, there’s nothing to add and nothing to take away. His or her core is expressing itself through the paint brush, the pen, or the kick.
    Bruce Lee Stages of Cultivation

    Knowing is a Process
Knowledge is fixed in time, whereas, knowing is continual. Knowledge comes from a source, from an accumulation, from a conclusion, while knowing is a movement.

Embracing the fact that knowing will never end is the most important quality you need to have to excel in any art or profession. Most people live a life wherein they are continuously struggling to accumulate new knowledge in order to grow. Knowledge, however, doesn’t lead to mastery. What leads to mastery is embracing the process of continuous growth. You must have a fundamental understanding of the importance of maintaining what most people call “The Beginner’s mind.”
Mindfulness 9 attitudes - beginners mind.

    Empty your Mind
Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.

Empty yourself. Empty yourself from emotions, thoughts, or even ideas. A mind devoid of chatter is the mind of a true warrior.

We must be on the wave together , last night I watched a bunch of Bruce Lee videos , and saw the one where he says , water can flow or crash , be water my friend ... strangely enough they say all life began in the water ...our bodies are 80 percent water they say , we live in the first nine months of life in a water world ... and tell me standing on the beach looking out at the ocean quietly doesn't do something to you that nothing else does ... I like his ideas , use what's usable , be flexible never trapped into one style ...

    Default Re: Bruce Lee’s Teachings

Awesomeness! Two of my most favourite people... Bruce Lee and Alan Watts... I think both were ahead of their time. I didn't know Bruce had so many philosophical ideas, although I remember the water analogy ... and Alan Watts will forever be one of the first "mind expanding" authors I ever read... maybe the first to set me on a path of iconoclastic thinking. One of the first to point out the relationship between "Christianity" and "Eastern Philosophy" a brilliant man, and as he continued to publish, he became ever so eloquent in his ability to espouse his wisdom... I am not sure the order of his books, but I found "This Is IT" and the "Wisdom of Insecurity" moving toward a clear, concise, and absolutely profound commentary on his interpretation of the nature of conscious experience, what it means. Some works if you read them in the right way, can have an almost transcendent effect on your thinking... These are definitely in that category...

btw, when you think about it, "Love" can be a vague word, as the book "The Four Loves" will point out... one of it's meanings can include the idea of "Compassion" which is one of the hallmarks of Eastern Philosophical thinking... And from that take off point, the idea that there may be more than a coincidental relationship between Eastern Philosophy, and Christianity, which was originally called "The Way" (a very "Eastern" feel imo) and which appears as a juxtaposition, that crops up (almost out of nowhere) in the middle of a world dominated by Roman Military Fascist Dictatorship, literal Might is Right... in the most physically brutal and literal sense... (which directly ties into and follows the Arthurian legends/mythos, based on the theme of Right is Right, believe it or not...) as an attempt at an antithesis to that world... a world changing philosophy coming into being within the most brutal government on earth. How exactly did that happen?... (I know, I know, an angel came to Mary...)

It still makes me wonder about those "missing years" of his life in the Bible... How could the quintessential, the most definitive book on "Jesus Christ" leave out 2/3 of his life!? Unless... what is NOT said, sometimes makes just as much a statement, as what IS said... especially when taken within a larger and undeniable context. This particular "absence" of information, in such an important tome, is deafening to me, and can only mean a hidden interpretation exists somewhere else... at least that is what my intuition is telling me, in any event... o.O

In that sense I am in total agreement with Watts, that there is a fundamental relationship between "Christianity" and "Eastern Philosophy". After all, once you get past all the words, definitions, connotations of dogmatic interpretation, etc... we are talking about a spiritual concept, an experiential reality, and that is where Watts truly shines. He definitely grasped the subtle nature of differentiating between words (symbolic referents) and the experience they are a mere abstraction of, something real and tangible, that can exist without words, and have even more definitive meaning... that would be an example of transcendence...

Wow.. I too was looking at Bruce Lee a few weeks ago when I was researching Jiddu Krishnamurti. Krishnamurti was a big influence on him as well as Alan Watts and others.

A true master of chi. His mind was tuned as well as his physique. Love the way how he demonstrates this in the one inch punch and his unsual ping-pong style.

Thank you RunningDeer for reminding me of that way of being!

I was already in that frame of mind when Bruce Lee hit the screen! (no pun intended)

It is one of my past life ways I think, I was always in tune with martial arts on a spiritual level, not just for self defense! And on the level of every day movement/motion through life, in regards to this Circles work best

Thank you Bruce Lee and your master 'Yip man'? I sorry can't remember his proper name for bringing to the world your teachings. Bruce Lee was actually a Wistleblower and broke the code of silence to the west!

Love, Peace, Health, Happiness and go with the flow

As a martial artist, he was and still is virtually unparalleled. At the conclusion of his infamous duel, his back was broken and it was proclaimed by doctors that he would neither practice martial arts, nor walk again without assistance.

In the vernacular, he declared "F--- that noise" and proceeded to recover to all but - if not - 100%. This experience served as proof positive of one of his many poignant quotes. I'm paraphrasing here, but,....

"The mind/will is capable of directing the body to surpass its limitations, even subjugating actual physical pain."

His book - The Tao of Jeet Kune Do - is a phenomenal read. While it has elements of martial arts and/or fighting skill, it is more a book of quotations and philosophy than it is a manual on how to whoop some ass. It does mention how to whoop ass, but that IMO is an aside to its true value, which is largely depicted in the quotations referenced above (and hopefully below!).

    A Journey…Pursuit of Excellence
From Child Prodigy to Adult Wiz

On Amazon: “The Art of Learning: An Inner Journey to Optimal Performance,” by Josh Waitzkin

“Waitzkin, a champion in chess and martial arts, brings enthusiasm and obvious love of learning to this amazing look at what he aptly describes as the art of learning…”

“…Since then, he has been among the highest-ranked chess players. He recounts the distractions of adolescence as well as fame after the publication of his father's book and, later, the film based on it, Searching for Bobby Fischer.”

He later discovered that chess principles could be applied to learning tai chi. In fact, he found a respect for artistry, meditation, and philosophical devotion within both chess and martial arts and realized the possibility for broader application to learning in general. Waitzkin integrates his personal experiences in mastering chess and tai chi with research on psychology and learning techniques to offer a vibrant and engaging look at the love of learning and the pursuit of excellence.”

Awesome Napoleon quote! I would offer this as a follow up:

The leader isn't necessarily the person(s) issuing orders. Often times they are simply those who are in the lead.

    Absolutely agreed.

Case in point.... president of the USA as just one of many examples.

I like this quote as well.......

....but it is not exclusive to 'human' nature.

"If you build an army of 100 lions and their leader is a dog, in any fight, the lions will die like a dog. But if you build an army of 100 dogs and their leader is a lion, all dogs will fight as a lion"." - Napoleon Bonaparte

It's not a quote I relate to. Either I've missed the point or I'm too literal this evening.

    From my perspective:
    • The quote doesn’t fit the world I’m here to co-create.
    • I’m not here to conquer anything.
    • Why build an army?
    • Competition is not the way of the new energy.
    • Leadership changes as a project evolves.
    • Dogs and lions deserve peace and freedom to roam.
    Couldn’t resist adding this:

Honey & Kwanza - Dog & Lion Best Friends
