In remembrance ...

I grew up in Washington DC during the 1950-60's period. At that time the Capitol City was still segregated in many social ways, Then in 1954 partly due to the District's unique status under the Constitution ... And mostly due to 'the U.S. Supreme Court deciding unanimously that all of D.C.'s public schools had to be integrated.... And especially due to the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education (thanks to the great Thurgood Marshall) the Eisenhower administration decided to make D.C. schools the first to integrate, as an example to the rest of the nation.

Note this was not really an issue within my family, for my parents for many years (post WWII) had worked and lived in the same neighborhoods with mutual friends. Cohabiting usually with great respect and little concerns to the phobia outside the District of Columbia boundaries. While all this was mostly unbeknownst to me during my younger years, i would gradually notice a decline of white families in our neighborhood.

Please note: "In 1957, Washington became the first major city in the nation with a majority African-American population. Like many cities, it had received thousands of black people from the South in the Great Migration, starting during World War I and accelerating in the 1940s and 1950s. With the buildup of government and defense industries during World War II, many new residents found jobs. In the postwar years, whites who were better established economically began to move to newer housing in adjoining states in the suburbanization movement that occurred around most major cities. They were aided by the extensive highway construction undertaken by federal and state governments."

Still my family remained living within the District (as it is called locally) during that period due to economic ties and love for the city. Though this would leave my older sister and brother and myself in a unique situation, as minorities in the then school system. While my sister and brother would finish they're schooling not long there after, i was left almost alone in experiencing something very rare for a young Caucasian boy back in those days. And soon thereafter everything would change 'on August 28, 1963, Washington DC took center stage in the American Civil Rights Movement, with the historic March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famed "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial.'

So i at the age of twelve and in the 6th grade, i became a minority within a minority. All while witnessing upfront and close a traumatic social event unfold. i will say now it was often difficult and sometimes even scary for me, because i did take some licks by a few school peers. Oddly though (then and now) somewhere inside my soul, i understood in a human way what real race discrimination feels like ... Because what i witnessed and still remember seeing (back then) mirrored in the eyes and hearts of my school peers ... Has allowed for me to become the man that i am proud to be today ...

The Dark Net/ Hat Man

"In the first half of the program, George Knapp was joined by author and media researcher Jamie Bartlett for a discussion on the Dark Net, an online underworld which exists in the most secretive corners of the web. "We have, alongside the Internet that we all know, a separate, encrypted part of the Internet," he said, describing the Dark Net. This realm of cyberspace, Bartlett explained, cannot by found via search engines nor explored using traditional browsers such as Firefox or Chrome. Those who wish to access the Dark Net must use a special browser known as 'Tor,' which shrouds the identity of the user and allows them to visit up to 60,000 clandestine websites. "Because of the way it is all hidden and secret," he mused, "more or less anything goes."

To that end, Bartlett detailed one of the most notorious sites on the Dark Net known as 'Silk Road.' He likened the site, which was shut down by the FBI in 2013, to a black market version of eBay that allowed users to buy and sell drugs, counterfeit paperwork, and other illicit items. The site proved so popular that, over the course of its brief existence, Silk Road is believed to have facilitated transactions totaling over a billion dollars and spawned twenty to thirty similar illegal exchange sites. Bartlett also detailed how there are sites which feature alleged hit men brazenly advertising their 'skills' for prospective clients. While these assassins' sites have been verified by many visitors to the Dark Net, the actual veracity of the would-be killers remains a mystery. During his appearance, Bartlett also discussed his research into the allure of anonymity in cyberspace and the subculture of Internet trolls."

"In the latter half, researcher Heidi Hollis talked about a supernatural being known for wearing a hat and peering into people's homes and lives. She traced her original awareness of this entity back to when her college roommate had an encounter with a man that appeared to emerge from the shadows of her bedroom and cornered her. When she heard her roommate's screams of terror, Hollis ran into the room and seemingly caused the entity to disappear. Later, the woman drew a picture of what she saw and sketched a man sporting a three-piece suit, a trench coat, and a gaucho hat, which led to the entity being christened the 'Hat Man.' Much to Hollis' surprise, when she posted the picture on her website, she began receiving emails from people claiming to have had similar encounters with the entity.

While Hollis originally thought the 'Hat Man' was another form of the infamous 'shadow person' phenomenon, further insights from witnesses has led her to conclude that the entity is an entirely separate enigma. Moreover, she suggested that the distinct outfit donned by the 'Hat Man' is an intentional tactic aimed at ensuring recognition from witnesses. "He wants people to know that he is showing up everywhere," she surmised, "it's a disturbing pattern." Chillingly, Hollis also observed that the 'Hat Man' appears to have a sense of awareness and that he will make his presence felt when people discuss him. Although Hollis refrained from speculating on what the true nature of the 'Hat Man' might be, she noted that witnesses consistently report feeling a sense of dread from their encounter and warned that "whatever he is, it doesn't matter, just know that you don't want him in your life."
