Default "Fast Radio Bursts": What do they mean?

Once again, I dislike the use of the term "aliens" in news articles because I think it feeds into the fear porn, but this is an interesting article nonetheless.

    From: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencete...tronomers.html

Quote Are these mystery radio bursts messages from ALIENS? Freak frequency from outside the Milky Way baffles astronomers
-Scientists are trying to work out what is causing Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs)
-The strange signals occur for a few milliseconds and come from nowhere
-The first was detected in 2007, but only a handful have been seen since
-In April the latest discovery was made, but still the mystery persists
-Explanations range from colliding neutron stars to alien signals

    By JONATHAN O'CALLAGHAN

In 1967 British astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell was left stunned by mysterious pulsing signals she detected coming from outside the solar system.
For months she suggested the signals could be of an extraterrestrial intelligent origin, but they were later proven to be rapidly spinning stars known as pulsars.
However, a new series of mysterious signals, known as Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs), has again got astronomers scratching their heads and wondering if, maybe, we’re picking up alien messages.

FRBs are radio emissions that appear temporarily and randomly, making them not only hard to find, but also hard to study.

The mystery stems from the fact it is not known what could produce such a short and sharp burst. This has led some to speculate they could be anything from stars colliding to artificially created messages.

The first FRB was spotted, or rather ‘heard’ by radio telescopes, back in 2007 - but it was so temporary and seemingly random that it took years for astronomers to even agree it wasn’t a glitch in one of the telescope's instruments.
The signal, which lasted just five milliseconds, was named the Lorimer burst after its discoverer, Duncan Lorimer.
The radio emission was so dispersed, experts suggested it must have come from a great distance away, possibly billions of light-years.
But early estimates said there should be 10,000 of these events a day – so the fact that another wasn’t discovered until 2012 was troubling.
This was when data from the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia suggested it had heard another FRB, along with a handful of others, but the fact that only Parkes had detected the signals had some claiming these were merely instrument glitches.
A recent discovery, in April of this year, of an FRB using the giant radio dish in Puerto Rico confirmed to astronomers that these signals are indeed real – but they’re no closer to finding out an answer as to what they are.
Theories so far include flaring stars, white dwarfs merging, neutron stars colliding and – most intriguingly – alien signals.

‘This extraordinary finding either indicates an as yet unknown or unusual astronomical phenomenon, or it could indicate that this is a vast alien communication network, and the universe is teeming with intelligent life forms,’ says Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual.
‘Every unusual signal from outer space encourages us to wonder if it is from an alien civilisation.
‘Since this signal seems so elusive and hard to interpret then this should be a candidate for further analysis.
‘It would be fantastic if this was an alien signal as the knowledge that we are not alone in this vast universe would have a dramatic impact on our perception of our place in the scheme of things.'
For now, however, FRBs remain very much a mystery.
It will take further studies and observations in future to truly determine where they come from, and what is causing them. Until then, it’s difficult to rule any particular theory out of the window.
If I had to wager a bet, I would say this is just another part of the plan to "prep" us for "alien invasion". What do you guys think? Surely it must serve some purpose like that since it keeps up the guise that our governments have no knowledge of "aliens" and have not been in contact for years and years. Seems like the MSM is getting a bit more aggressive with this stuff lately...

Paul LaViolette in Decoding the Message of the Pulsars explains in great detail how there are two pulsars at one radian either side of the galactic centre, i.e. at an equal distance from it as we are. These locations indicate intelligence and also knowledge of the direction of galactic centre when viewed from our solar system. Other pulsars, he says, are at nonrandom locations, forming a communications network, and the interstellar message being sent out from these extraterrestrial beacons relates to galactic core explosions past and future.

It's not happening when black holes dissolve or whatever?

Could it be some sort of nuclear war?

p.s. apparently the same event that produces gold produces FRB:

Quote The birth of black holes: neutron star collapse times, gamma-ray bursts and fast radio bursts
    Vikram Ravi, Paul D. Lasky
    (Submitted on 25 Mar 2014 (v1), last revised 10 Apr 2014 (this version, v2))

Recent observations of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) suggest that binary neutron star (NS) mergers can create highly magnetised, millisecond NSs. Sharp cut-offs in X-ray afterglow plateaus of some SGRBs hint at the gravitational collapse of these remnant NSs to black holes. The collapse of such `supramassive' NSs also describes the blitzar model, a leading candidate for the progenitors of fast radio bursts (FRBs). The observation of an FRB associated with an SGRB would provide compelling evidence for the blitzar model and the binary NS merger scenario of SGRBs, and lead to interesting constraints on the NS equation of state. We predict the collapse times of supramassive NSs created in binary NS mergers, finding that such stars collapse ∼10s -- 4.4×104s (95% confidence) after the merger. This directly impacts observations targeting NS remnants of binary NS mergers, providing the optimal window for high time resolution radio and X-ray follow-up of SGRBs and gravitational wave bursts.

Quote Waves of particles, including neutrinos, leave the core, carrying the gravitational energy of the collapsing star. The infalling outer layers of the star absorb many of these neutrinos, giving rise to extremely high temperatures – hot enough to trigger the fusion of elements including gold and uranium (as described in Rebusco et al., 2007). A small proportion of these neutrinos, however, escapes the atmosphere of the dying star and can be detected on Earth, in the silence deep below the planet’s surface.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_collision

Quote Neutron star collisions occur in a fashion similar to type 1a supernovae. When two neutron stars orbit each other closely, they spiral inward as time passes. When the two neutron stars meet, their collision leads to the formation of a black hole (assuming their combined mass exceeds the Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff limit). This creates a magnetic field that is trillions times stronger than that of Earth, in a matter of one or two milliseconds. Astronomers believe that this event is what creates certain kinds of gamma-ray bursts.[7] Images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that gold is yielded, along with many other heavy metals, from a violent neutron star collision. These collisions, which happen once every 10,000 to 100,000 years in this galaxy, may account for all the gold in the universe.[8]

Australian scientists make world first discovery after capturing alien radio signals tearing through space in real time

    January 20, 2015

A TEAM of Australian scientists have made a discovery that would impress the likes of Mulder and Scully.

The scientists from Swinburne University in Melbourne achieved a world first when they managed to capture alien radio signals tearing through space in real time.

While there have been nine recorded findings of fast radio bursts since they were first discovered in 2007, all of those instances were found in existing data.

One possible theory is the fast radio burst was the result of an exploding star. Source: News Limited

Lead researcher Emily Petroff said the groundbreaking discovery brings astronomers a step closer to understanding the strange cosmic phenomenon that has scientists baffled.

“Fast radio bursts only last as long as it takes a human to blink their eye. That is what makes this discovery so exciting,” she said.

“Because we were able to catch the act, as opposed to existing data sets, we were able to reveal that the radiation produced by FRB was more than 20 per cent circularly polarised and this suggests there were strong magnetic fields near the source.”

The circular shape of the waves recorded was clearly foreign — radio bursts from Earth are usually one plane, and these were two.

Ms Petroff said the origin of the source remained a mystery, but the researchers believed it had to be huge, cataclysmic and up to 5.5 billion light years away.

“There are two competing models to explain the phenomenon,” she said.

“One suggests it is caused by the collapse or explosion of a star in other another galaxy, while the other suggests it comes from some sort of energy flaring from a neutron star.

“However, both of these could be incorrect and it could be something entirely different.”

The Parkes Telescope in New South Wales made the discovery Picture: Wayne England Source: Supplied

Ms Petroff said the observation was made by the Parkes Telescope — a 64m diameter parabolic dish used for radio astronomy in New South Wales.

“For the project we had the telescope pointed at the location where one of the previous bursts from the data sets was recorded,” she said.

“It’s so exciting to know a similar occurrence has happened in the proximity of the first.

“After we recorded it, the project team pointed 12 other telescopes from around the globe to the exact spot where the event took place, but none of these saw any afterglow.”

That reminds me of the Wow! signal from back in the late 1970s. Quoting from the pertinent Wikipedia article:

The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected by Jerry R. Ehman on August 15, 1977, while he was working on a SETI project at the Big Ear radio telescope of Ohio State University, then located at Ohio Wesleyan University's Perkins Observatory in Delaware, Ohio. The signal bore the expected hallmarks of non-terrestrial and non-Solar System origin. It lasted for the full 72-second window that Big Ear was able to observe it, but has not been detected again. The signal has been the subject of significant media attention.

Amazed at how closely the signal matched the expected signature of an interstellar signal in the antenna used, Ehman circled the signal on the computer printout and wrote the comment "Wow!" on its side. This comment became the name of the signal.

Of course, we all know that an advanced extraterrestrial species will in all likelihood not be using something so archaic, slow and badly focused as radio waves for communication. But hey, it might have been a "blast from the past" on their part. :-)

But there really signal remains indecipherable, and it is the only message we have received from space? The answer seems to be no! Also this message is there an extra terrestrial beings message? The answer seems to be yes ! Like signals are received for a long time by the SETI program, but as usual the secret is well kept and remains unsolved poor citizens like us. Indeed, this is confirmed by Colonel Philip Corso who was a military intelligence officer who served in the NSC (National Sécurity Council) under Eisenhower.

What irks me about this story is? Seth Shoshack ( Head of SETI ) has been on C2C
Several times in this past year and he's never mentioned it. George has specifically
asked Seth if they ever got a signal would they keep it a secret? and he said that
they wouldn't. I think the next time he's on C2C I'm going to call him on his BS lol

Or they could be a younger than us.
That is possible, yes. The Drake equations allow for all possible variations in the evolutionary stages of any potential intelligent life out there, but given the time it takes for electromagnetic radiation to relativistically travel from "there" -- crudely and ignorantly assuming something in between a few hundreds to a few thousands of lightyears away -- to here on Earth, any EM transmission received from an actual extra-solar-system civilization will technically be "a blast from the past".

So even if the distance from here on Earth to the source of that radiation burst was only a few hundred lightyears, then that means that those beings already had powerful radio wave transmission a few hundred years ago by our time count. And thus, they could already have something far better by now -- something that isn't bound to the laws of general relativity. Of course, if that transmission had come from Alpha Centauri, then it would only have needed approximately four years to reach Earth, but if it had indeed come from there, then I'm sure the SETI guys would have noted that, and more publicity would have been given to the signal, given the relatively short distance from our own solar system to Alpha Centauri -- in terms of interstellar travel, Alpha Centauri is literally right next door from our neck of the galactic woods.

As an aside, an interesting notion here is that time may not progress at the same pace "there" as it does here due to gravitational and orbital velocity time dilation effects. Ergo, beings from a planet with a much greater mass than Earth may experience a life expectancy similar to that of humans, but we could technically be living twice as fast here on Earth as over there, or conversely, only half as fast, depending on the nature of their planet, its orbit around its sun, its rotational velocity, and its proximity to other celestial bodies with large masses.

It is all very fascinating if you think about it. And then I'm not even going to be touching upon so-called hyperdimensional life. :-)

Hey jagman , I know you can get on the air at C2C , ask them about the carter administration rejecting a letter sent by the plejaren to his administration , where they offered help and he declined .http://www.theyfly.com/1979_Letter.htm..

they have gotten more than a signal , they got a personal letter sent right to their arse ... right to their front door , straight from ET ... via their contactee Edward Meier ... according to the ET's , he supposedly had a problem telling the world religion was a scam and people should be responsible for their actions and thoughts ...

"Are alien radio beams causing one of the most mysterious signals from space? A new study by Manasvi Lingam and Avi Loeb at Harvard says that fast radio bursts (FRBs) could come from extraterrestrial radio beams being used as beacons or to power alien light sails.

The source of FRBs, which are milliseconds-long but incredibly bright pulses of radio waves, have intrigued and mystified astronomers for years – and this isn’t the first time aliens have been suggested."
