Default Russians duplicate Dr. Andrea Rossi's cold fusion E-CAT reactor

As reported earlier today by Joseph P. Farrell at COLD FUSION RACE HEATING UP?:

    =======
The Cold Fusion Race Just Heated Up

Now there's a hugely important point to notice in this article, and that is that the Russians have apparently successfully duplicated Dr. Andrea Rossi's cold fusion E-CAT reactor, and though the results are more modest than his claims, nonetheless with significant results. Referencing the report of the Universities of Uppsala and Bologna last year, and their conclusion that Rossi's device is indeed producing low energy nuclear reactions, the so-called Lugano Report, about which we blogged last year, and about which there has been considerable controversy, the article notes,
"The report was promptly savaged by sceptics, pointing out that Rossi was present for the test and questioning how independent it was. Steven B. Krivit, editor of New Energy Times, headlined his account "Rossi Handles Samples in Alleged Independent Test of His Device".

"The arguments about the Lugano Report continue, meanwhile there has been an even more surprising development. Prof Alexander Parkhomov of Lomonosov Moscow State University has published a paper describing his successful replication of the E-Cat, based on the available information about it. The paper is in Russian; there is a link and commentary and video in English on E-Cat World. Parkhomov's results are more modest, but the energy output of his cloned E-Cat claimed to be up to 2.74 times as great as the input.

"Parkhomov presented his results earlier this week at a cold fusion seminar at the Research Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Operation in Moscow."
In other words, the Russians are in the cold fusion game and in a major way, and given the context of this week's "space focus" in our blogs, this again provides an interesting context on just what appears to be going on. The pattern we have seen in the past few months of last year, and continuing into this year and perhaps - depending on one's perceptions - even intensifying, is (1) there seems to be a push underway to give attention to stories involving space, and in particular revelations or talk of some cutting edge technology in that respect, and (2) there is also, at the same time, a push underway to give attention to stories involving alternative energy technologies, in this case, Rossi's E-CAT cold fusion reactor (or, let us recall, Lockheed-Martin's curious cold-fusion story that was disclosed mere days after the release of the Lugano Report, a story that, you'll recall, pictured a device looking suspiciously like Philo Farnsworth's plasmator and fusor patents of the 1960s). In the context of the second aspect of this pattern, you'll recall that last year also saw the announcement that the Rockefeller Foundations were divesting themselves of petroleum securities in their portfolios.

Even more curious in this article is its mention of yet another strange conspiracy theory in connection to cold fusion:
"None of this is likely to bother sceptics in the global energy market, though there are signs of panic among conspiracy theorists. Russian media has repeated a rumour that President Obama discussed Chinese E-Cat production under licence with Xi Jinping in his recent visit, a move that might destroy Russia's vital energy exports." (Emphasis added)
Given the rather close connection between "Russian media" and the Russian government itself, one wonders just how reliable the rumor is. But let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the rumor is true. President Obama would not be in any position to offer a license to Xi Jinping or the Chinese government for the E-Cat process. It is not his process to offer, and, as the article indicates, Parkhamov's process is already open. So what might the truth, if any, be behind the rumor? Again, for the sake of argument, for Obama to offer any such thing to the Chinese would, on the face of it, make no geopolitical sense, since his administration is "pivoting to the Pacific" precisely to counteract growing Chinese power and influence in the region. But again, assume for the sake of argument that the rumor is true and that he made some sort of cold fusion offer to the Chinese government. He could only offer what the USA has some degree of control over, and that brings to mind once again the Lockheed-Martin cold fusion claims that appeared shortly after the Lugano Report's release.

Whether true or not (and I am strongly inclined to believe it isn't) the rumor nevertheless suggests - when added to the Rockefeller announcement of last year, and the emerging strange pattern of space-and-alternative-energy technology stories that seem to be on the uptake - that one thing that we are perhaps looking at is a new geopolitical game emerging, one involving space, its commercialization, and technologies that are, for the moment, and in the public venue at least, still the stuff of science fiction. But I strongly suspect, like the article itself indicates, that we're going to see not only more E-CAT stories this year, but also that we will see that pattern dramatically expand. When and if if does, we'll have more dots to connect.

It looks to me like the Petro-Dollar is dying ... not just the Dollar part ... but the Petro part as well .

It will take a few years, perhaps even another decade, to become obvious to most people, but the wheel is turning.

Bob Dobbs says virtually every show that they have a cold fusion devise and are
only waiting for the conditions to release it without being assassinated. He said
their consortium was looking to release it either in China or Africa as not to
derail the petrol chemical industry and its associated industries overnight.

Is there anything to these claims ? I don't know but Bob and the core of

Anyway lets hope some one can get this rolling.

I wonder if this story about Cold Fusion has anything to do with this
    news item on rt.com :
'Russia to help Egypt build ‘a whole new nuclear power industry’
    http://rt.com/news/231055-putin-sisi-egypt-talks/

Other news in 2014 had me thinking that Russia, China and India were considering
investing in new generation 'Thorium' nuclear reactors.
    See here:
    http://metro.co.uk/2014/07/21/china-...orium-4802929/

In fact, there's about a dozen countries looking at Thorium,
including the US, UK, Canada .. see here:

Wired magazine runs cold fusion reactor story, with an interesting outcome (in the experiment covered).

Quote "Meanwhile, Brian Ahern, a former USAF senior scientist and once one of Rossi's fiercest critics, is also now attempting to replicate the E-Cat effect."

Louis DeChiaro of US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) on Replicating Pons and Fleischmann
Posted on October 6, 2015 by Frank Acland • 217 Comments

Thanks to Adrian Ashfield for sharing this information with me who tells me this information comes from the research notes of Louis F. DeChiaro, Ph.D, a physicist with the US Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Dahlgren Warfare Center. I am told this text has been cleared for public dissemination.

As for duplicating the Pons and Fleischmann results, we now have a much better understanding of the phenomenon, and the list of prerequisite conditions is rather lengthy. Failure to meet even one of those conditions results in zero excess energy output. The data suggest that there may be more than one initiation mechanism, so I’m most qualified to comment upon what is known as the atomic vibrational LENR initiation mechanism (because my formal background is in Condensed Matter Physics). If one had to summarize the list in a fairly brief manner, I would write it as follows:

    1. It is necessary to set up conditions favoring the formation of molecular hydrogen (H2 or D2) inside the solid lattice for a certain range of possible values of lattice constant and for some fraction of the allowed values for electron momentum. This condition alone rules out almost ALL the elemental , because the electron density is just too large to permit molecules to form, except near vacancies in the lattice where a metal atom is absent.

    2. The overall hydrogen loading fraction (ratio of hydrogen to palladium atoms, for example) must exceed the minimum threshold of about 0.88, otherwise the “party” never even gets started. Achieving this level of loading in Pd is not trivial.

    3. Conditions must be set up (by appropriate choice of materials parameters and achieved by the right kind of alloying) so that these hydrogen molecules can be caused to break up and then re-assemble very rapidly in a periodic time sequence when an appropriate physical quantity such as background electric charge, magnetic field, etc. is made to oscillate periodically over a small range.

    4. The critical value of lattice constant at which this break up and reassembly occurs must lie very close to the nominal value of lattice constant for which the ground state energy of the lattice is minimal. This requirement alone rules out essentially all of the elemental lattices and about 99% of the binary and ternary alloys.

    5. A departure from equilibrium must be established that will permit an external energy source (eg. the DC power supply in an electrolysis experiment and/or a pair of low power lasers as in the Letts/Hagelstein two laser experiment) to feed energy into the H-H or D-D stretching mode vibrations. The difference in chemical potential that is established in gas loading experiments can also serve very nicely; in this case the flux feeds energy into the stretching mode vibrations.

    6. The nature of the lattice must permit these stretching mode vibrations to grow so large (over a period of perhaps many nanoseconds) that their amplitude becomes comparable to the lattice constant. When this occurs, the H atoms oscillate so violently that at the instants of closest approach, the curvature of the parabolic energy wells in which the atomic nuclei vibrate will become perturbed. Thus the curvature of the well oscillates as a periodic function of time. These very large amplitude vibrations are known as superoscillations in the Western literature and as “discrete breathers” in the Ukrainian literature. Under the right conditions, these oscillations can grow without impacting the atoms, which are much more massive than the hydrogens. We explored this computationally via Density Functional Molecular Dynamics runs.

    7. When the curvatures of the parabolic energy wells of the nuclei are modulated at a frequency very near the natural resonant frequency, the quantum expectation value of the nuclear wave function spatial spread will oscillate with time in such a way that the positive-going peaks grow exponentially with time. Originally, I found this idea in the Ukrainian literature and was skeptical. So, we verified it by doing a direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrodinger Equation for a single nuclear particle in a parabolic energy well. These oscillations in spatial spread will periodically delocalize the nucleus and facilitate the tunneling of adjacent nuclei into the Strong Force attractive nuclear potential well, giving rise to nuclear fusion at rates that are several tens of orders of magnitude larger than what one calculates via the usual Gamow Factor integral relationship.

Almost none of this material was obvious back in 1989. Without knowing what one is doing and why it works, the probability of achieving successful results via the so-called Edisonian method of trial and error is disappointingly low. Reasonable scientists and engineers can be forgiven for their difficulty in believing that there might exist ANY circumstances under which such things could be possible. And to be blunt, it was only in the last few months that the causal chain finally became clear.

An old saying holds that it is easy to appear tall when standing on the shoulders of giants. My colleagues and I are most humbly grateful to have been given the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of such giants, however briefly.

I would also suggest that some praise might be due to people like Andrea Rossi, who (by and large) had little alternative but to employ the Edisonian method and nevertheless appear to have obtained positive results. We have run materials simulations (also known as Density Functional Theory simulations) on our best guess of Rossi’s alloy material. It satisfies all the conditions given above, while pure Nickel does not.

In like manner, the Naval Research Labs (NRL) ran over 300 experiments using pure Pd cathodes, all of them yielding negative results. Then somebody suggested that NRL should try an alloy of 90% Pd and 10% Rh. The very first such alloy cathode they tried yielded over 10,000 Joules of excess thermal energy – all from less than 1 gram of cathode material. I ran Density Functional Theory simulations on that alloy, and it, too, satisfies all the conditions given above, while pure Pd and pure Rh do not.

NRL christened this cathode with the name Eve, after the obvious Biblical analogy. I’m pleased to share the news that Eve had a number of “sisters” who produced equal and even greater excess thermal energy, among a number of other more interesting effects. Finally, I can observe that the materials simulations now make it fairly easy to evaluate any given solid lattice material and estimate its level of LENR activity. We have good correlations between the simulation results and the known levels of experimentally-determined LENR activity in a number of different alloys whose dominant elements come from the Transition Metal Group of the Periodic Table. Hopefully, we will be able to get all the details of this material released for publication to the general public over the next few weeks.

Rossi achieves the hydrogen loading ratio via a nickel nano alloy, one where the alloy nanopowder has a very specific particle size and shape, in order to facilitate the requisite free electron levels.

Then he takes that mix and impregnates it as much as possible with gaseous thermally loaded reactive conditions, with the lithium and aluminum alloys, and the hydrogen gas.

The aluminum and lithium are highly reactive pH wise, and also prone to vaporization at the temperatures involved...and pure gases have quantum function as the norm, no lattice newtonian behavior...and thus let us remember that down at the bottom chemistry is actually electricity, but atomic-nano/quantum in action/function.

In this, he gets to the over-unity thermal output nuclear reactions.

    Voila.....repeatable functional controllable..... cold fusion.

It has to be the first gas, the first noble, and the first solid, as they have the highest energies available, on 'spin down', as it were.

The idea of hydrogen as the near universal key in frequency and energy levels, for unlocking the entire table of elements. Like the ultimate position pre-dogfight, high in the clouds, the highest position, so it can swoop down to the given energy levels and take things apart.

A master key of potential in frequency and energy, that's hydrogen: closest to the origin, but not truly the origin frameworks, just the first primary resonance pattern.

I'm pretty sure Rossi is using palladium for the lattice behavior with a nano nickle (or nickle alloy) powder (his "secret" catalyst) and hydrogen gas.. it's been a while since I kept up with Rossi (slowwwwww approval process apparently on easy energy) I'm fairly certain this was all discussed in a thread I started on Rossi before.

Basically it's the exact same as the Pons and Fleischmann experiment with a much better catalyst (the nano nickle or nickle alloy powder). and a twist of using gasses instead of liquids.

I'd say once we master hydrogen and it's various uses (obviously fusion being the most powerful for our current needs) we are almost ready to be a Type 2 civ (at least, as a whole... assuming we are not already).

Rossi's cold fusion device is supported scientifically by this correlation.

With Rossi's device, we are talking about an avalanche of atomic behaviour, caused by the infusion of the hydrogen in a nickel-lithium nano catalyst. It is heated and we get an thermal 'over unity' (avalanche, etc) seeming effect.

Imagine a sponge that could soak up a thousand times its own volume in water. Now imagine how effective that sponge would be if it could store hydrogen instead of water, giving researchers an alternative to compressed air cylinders for storing the gas.

Palladium, a precious metal closely related to platinum, is that sponge. Unlike any other element, it takes up hydrogen at room temperature and pressure. In a recent study, scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have gained new insight into how this uptake of hydrogen occurs, realized how it impacts the atomic structure of the palladium, and identified key properties of how this form of hydrogen storage could work in the future.

When hydrogen is cycled into the palladium nanoparticles, it alters and degrades the particles' structure over time due to strain. "It's like trying to put your foot in too small of a shoe," said Argonne postdoctoral researcher Andrew Ulvestad, who was the study's first author.

In this study, Ulvestad and his colleagues sought to map the change in the strain distribution inside the palladium nanoparticles over time. "If you can see the evolution of the strain distribution, you can tell what the hydrogen inside is doing," Ulvestad said.

To do so, the researchers used the coherent high-intensity X-rays produced at the 34-ID-C beamline at the Advanced Photon Source, a DOE Office of Science User Facility located at Argonne.

In the nanoparticles, the researchers saw, the hydrogen atoms get incorporated into the lattice of the metal atoms that compose the nanoparticle. This, however, is not a uniform process. As the hydrogen is taken up over time, there is eventually a sudden reconfiguration of the hydrogen distribution within the lattice, a process colloquially referred to as "avalanching."

According to Ulvestad, the "avalanches" within the nanoparticle lattice may be caused by the hydrogen atoms finding intermediate, or metastable, energy states during the reconfiguration. In large enough particles, the rearrangement of the lattice into these metastable states causes permanent defects to form in the lattice itself. As these defects form, the palladium nanoparticles become less able to take up hydrogen from the environment.

"The ultimate goal is hydrogen storage or purification, and this research gets us closer to making that a reality," Ulvestad said. "This work may not be ready to translate to cars quite yet, but there are certain applications on the grid scale that we are beginning to look at."

A paper based on the study, "Avalanching strain dynamics during the hydriding phase transformation in individual palladium nanoparticles," appeared in the December 11 issue of Nature Communications.
