NASA's Earth-Observing Fleet, February 2015

This animation shows the orbits of NASA's fleet of Earth remote sensing observatories as of February 2015.

The satellites include components of the A-Train: Aqua, Aura, CloudSat, CALIPSO

Recently launched missions: SMAP, GPM, OCO-2

the International Space Station

and eleven others:, Aquarius, Suomi NPP, Terra, SORCE, GRACE, Jason 2, Landsat 7, Landsat 8, QuikSCAT, TRMM, EO-1

These satellites measure rainfall, solar irradiance, clouds, sea surface height, ocean salinity, and other aspects of the global environment. Together, they provide a picture of the Earth as a system.

"In the first half, investigative reporter Peter Lance along with John A. Gotti, the son of the infamous mob boss, discussed the true story behind the Gotti crime family and how Gotti's attempts to leave the mob life and raise a normal family were repeatedly hindered by the Justice Department. Gotti was motivated to tell his own story and that of his father's after numerous others, including journalists and government informants were publishing or about to publish accounts about the Gottis. According to law enforcement claims, Gotti served as the boss of the Gambino crime family from 1992 to 1999 after his father John J. Gotti was sent to prison. Gotti Jr. spent 77 months in a series of federal prisons after pleading guilty to racketeering charges and was released in 2005, and faced four additional racketeering trials, all which ended in mistrials.

Lance, who wrote the foreward to Gotti's book, was given access to his files and became convinced that the Feds mistreated and hounded him after he'd already served time. He was impressed that Gotti Jr. steadfastly refused to testify against anyone "in the life" even though he himself had dropped out of the crime family. Gotti Jr. recounted tales of his father, who died in prison at age 61. Known as the "The Dapper Don," he was said to have a genius IQ and never revealed the nature of his business to his family when they were growing up."

"Appearing in the last hour, stand-up comedian, actor, and author Richard Belzer discussed his latest work authoring a book with George Noory on the missing airliner - Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. It's been a year since the disappearance of the flight and the mysteries surrounding the jet and its passengers are more confusing now than ever, with the latest clue being an unopened Malaysian airline moist towelette washing ashore on an Australian beach. Belzer leans toward the explanation that the plane was hijacked and then destroyed over fears that it might be used in a 9-11 type scenario. It could be that it was shot down as an impending terrorist threat, he added.

The third hour featured Open Lines, with a variety of callers sharing their theories about what happened to Flight 370. A remote viewer named Chuck from Martinez, CA said he believes the plane is 100 miles off the east coast of Africa, in a covered building. Another caller, who works in aviation, suggested that Putin (trying to deflect attention away from Ukraine) was behind the disappearance, and perhaps the two Russians aboard took the plane down into the water, and then escaped in waiting submarines."

ACTIVE SUNSPOT TURNS TOWARD EARTH: Sunspot AR2297 is crackling with solar flares, and it poses a growing threat for Earth-directed eruptions as it turns toward our planet this week. This 4-day movie from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the sunspot moving into geoeffective position:



During the days covered by the movie, AR2297 more than doubled in size. Moreover, it developed a 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field. Such a magnetic field is unstable to the kind of explosive magnetic reconnection NASA will study using its MMS fleet, slated for launch on March 12th. Mindful of the sunspot's development, NOAA forecasters have estimated a 60% chance of M-class flares and a 10% chance of powerful X-flares on March 11th.

UPDATE ON 2015 OPENING:

The ranch is preparing to open for our 2015 season.

We are going back through the reservation request emails received during the winter in a chronological order to honor those who requested reservations months ago. This process will be up to date by March 20th.

In the meantime, here's some information that might help:
1. The ranch will formally open the weekend of May 1, 2015
2. For information on the 2015 workshop and conference schedule visit www.privateinvitationeceti.com
3. Please note during the conference (July 2-5) we have camping available for conference attendees but our accommodations are reserved for our presenters. The website mentioned above has information on the motels available in Trout Lake.
4. If it's your first time visiting ECETI there is a document that answers all your questions. We are updating that now and it will be added to the website mentioned in #2 by March 15th.
5. If you have left a voicemail message on the ranch's phone over the winter we apologize for the delay in getting back to you. We are in the process of reviewing the winter procedures to better serve our community and we thank you for your support of ECETI and interest in contacting James.
