    Welcome, Awakening2014.

I'm a new member too, but I figured I'd chime in on this thread, as I have had similar experiences throughout my life.

Jake is giving some good advice: sleep paralysis can indeed be a stage to achieving full OOBE. From my point of view, it is nothing to get worried over, and is a perfectly natural occurrence. That said, sleep paralysis can be scary for those not used to it; unfamiliar sounds, sensations, possibly visuals might greet you, since you are not fully attached to your physical body. When I was a child, I had some terrifying experiences with sleep paralysis, involving shadowy beings, 'hag' types and other phenomena. As a child they were frightening, but since that time I have grown used to such things, and have removed all fear from it. After having countless OOBEs, I have become more confident in my abilities, to the point where such experiences are truly empowering.

In addition to what was mentioned above, another technique that works during sleep paralysis is the 'Roll Out' of your body. You can practice it before you go to sleep, in order to habituate yourself to it. The next time you find yourself paralyzed, attempt to roll sideways in bed. Since your consciousness is not attached to the physical body, you may find yourself rolling out of it completely.

As Sirdipswitch mentioned, William Buhlman is a wonderful author on OOBEs. I would also recommend the books of John Magnus, who gives some excellent sleep-based OOBE techniques. The works of Robert A. Monroe would also be a great read. The best teacher is, of course, your own experience.

Proceed with confidence, I say, and leave your fears behind. Whatever beings are out there in the astral, remember that you are far more powerful than they are. There are many wonderful times to be had; it is out-of-body that I have beheld sights lovelier than in all of this world, and learned many things about myself in the process.
