NSA, GCHQ targeted Kaspersky, other cybersecurity companies – Snowden docs

    Published time: June 22, 2015 18:44
    Edited time: June 22, 2015 19:55

    Reuters / Sergei Karpukhin

US and British spy agencies worked to reverse-engineer antivirus software in order to "exploit such software and to prevent detection of our activities." Russian security firm Kaspersky Lab was particularly targeted.

Citing documents leaked by former intelligence contractor Edward Snowden more than two years ago, The Intercept reported Monday that the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) teamed up to subvert antivirus and security software made by the likes of Kaspersky Lab.

In addition, 23 total security firms -- including the antivirus company F-Secure of Finland, Avast from the Czech Republic, and DrWeb of Russia -- were targets of the NSA's Project CAMBERDADA."

The spy agencies sought to remain ahead of the software companies -- which often flag state-sponsored malware -- in order to give the US and UK governments an advantage during official hacking operations.

Kaspersky Lab was a particularly crucial target, according to the Snowden documents.

Quote “Personal security products such as the Russian anti-virus software Kaspersky continue to pose a challenge to GCHQ’s CNE [Computer Network Exploitation] capability and SRE [software reverse engineering] is essential in order to be able to exploit such software and to prevent detection of our activities,” GCHQ wrote in a warrant renewal request from 2008. “Examination of Kaspersky and other such products continues.”
GCHQ's request -- valid for six months from July 7, 2008 to January 7, 2009 -- sought reauthorization from the UK Foreign Secretary for infiltration that would “involve modifying commercially available software to enable interception, decryption and other related tasks, or ‘reverse engineering’ software.”

Sans a warrant for reverse engineering, GCHQ was concerned that its actions might be "unlawful" or an infringement of copyright claims.

Quote “Reverse engineering of commercial products needs to be warranted in order to be lawful,” a GCHQ agency memo said. “There is a risk that in the unlikely event of a challenge by the copyright owner or licensor, the courts would, in the absence of a legal authorisation, hold that such activity was unlawful[…]”
The NSA also sought weaknesses in Kaspersky Lab's software, employed by more than 400 million users worldwide, the company has claimed. The American spy agency found, in 2008, that the company transmitted sensitive user data to back the company's servers. The "leaky" information -- embedded in what is called "User-Agent" strings -- was then intercepted and used to track Kaspersky customers, The Intercept reported.

In a statement to The Intercept, Kaspersky Lab denied "User-Agent" strings could be used to track its customers.

Quote “The information is depersonalized and cannot be attributed to a specific user or company,” Kaspersky Lab said. “We take all possible measures to protect this data from being compromised, for example through strong encryption.”
Through what was known as “Project CAMBERDADA," the NSA also monitored email traffic of foreign antivirus companies as late as 2010. The spy agency sought to uncover software vulnerabilites or malware reports. Project CAMBERDADA involved 23 antivirus companies, though not US-based McAfee and Symantec or the UK's Sophos.

"A prolific hunter of state-sponsored malware," according to The Intercept, Kaspersky Lab, founded by Eugene Kaspersky, has helped unearth many superviruses, including Stuxnet, an unprecedented tool of cyber-warfare, in 2010.

Quote "It is extremely worrying that government organizations would be targeting us instead of focusing resources against legitimate adversaries, and working to subvert security software that is designed to keep us all safe," Kaspersky Lab told The Intercept. "However, this doesn’t come as a surprise. We have worked hard to protect our end users from all types of adversaries. This includes both common cyber-criminals or nation state-sponsored cyber-espionage operations."
Though the company has cooperated with law enforcement during many cybercrime investigations, Kaspersky's reputation has earned the ire of Western spies, which claim his company is in league with the Russian intelligence service FSB. Kaspersky has denied the accusations, pointing to the company's reports on malware that came from Russian developers.

Quote “It’s very hard for a company with Russian roots to become successful in the U.S., European and other markets," he said in a recent blog post. "Nobody trusts us — by default."
The company expressed that it would used this newly found information to counteract any such attempts to reverse engineer and subvert its security services, not only for the sake of protecting its customers, but to help resist mass surveillance in general.

"As noted during the recent Duqu 2.0 nation-state sponsored attack, we find it extremely worrying that government organizations are targeting security companies instead of focusing their resources against legitimate adversaries, and are actively working to subvert security software that is designed to keep us all safe," Kaspersky Labs said in a statement to RT.

Quote "At Kaspersky Lab we diligently work to protect our users and to keep our products secure through intense code review and vulnerability assessment efforts. We are closely reviewing and investigating the information disclosed today in order to assess the potential level of risk it may pose to our infrastructure and how to effectively mitigate it."

"Once again, we would like to stress the need for security companies to work together as a community and fight for user privacy, the right to privacy on the Internet, thwart mass surveillance and make the world a safer place,"

The new legislation, approved in the country’s National Assembly on Wednesday, gives authorities the right to monitor

It also mandates internet service providers and telecommunication companies to release private data on request.

The internet giant has even gone as far as to set up a company specifically dedicated to the task, called Sidewalk Labs.

How will they do this you ask – through turning 10,000 of the big apple’s old phone booths into ad-supported ‘Wi-Fi pylons’.’

Spy agencies intercepted emails about vulnerabilities so that they could use them, according to reports

‘The British and American spy agencies deliberately broke anti-virus software so
that they could read the messages of their citizens, according to new leaks.

Both the NSA and GCHQ have long been said to have deliberately reversed
engineer software so that they could find weaknesses in software and exploit them
to read communications. But new documents show that the agencies did so to
some of the most popular antivirus software, potentially exposing hundreds of
millions of people to dangerous viruses, according to a report from The Intercept.

The agencies reverse engineered Kaspersky antivirus software so that they could
see how it worked and ensure that it didn’t keep them from looking through
computers, according to the report. They also looked through emails that had been
sent to the company flagging up viruses and vulnerabilities, the Intercept reported.’

NSA eavesdropped France finance ministers: WikiLeaks

‘Whistleblower website WikiLeaks says the US National Security Agency (NSA)
eavesdropped on two successive French finance ministers and the country’s
high-stakes export contracts, trade and budget talks over a decade.

According to new documents released by the transparency website on Monday,
the NSA wiretapped the communications of two finance ministers — Francois
Baroin and Pierre Moscovici — and three other senior officials between 2004 and 2012.

It added that the agency called intelligence services from Australia, the United
Kingdom, Canada, and New Zealand to collect information on France’s export
bids worth more than $200 million from 2002-2012 in sectors including oil,
gas, telecommunications, electricity, nuclear energy, transport and health.’

GCHQ secret unit involved in domestic internet manipulation - report

    Published time: June 29, 2015 15:16
    Edited time: June 29, 2015 20:44
    http://cdn.rt.com/files/news/42/05/2...-aerial.si.jpg

‘A secretive unit of the UK’s GCHQ intelligence agency reportedly helps
traditional law enforcement with domestic spying and online propaganda,
    recently published documents reveal.

Documents recently published by the Intercept show how a secretive unit
of the GCHQ, called the Joint Threat Research Intelligence Group (JTRIG),
has been involved in domestic operations when not busy with
    counterterrorism operations abroad.

A 42-page report from 2011, entitled ‘Behavioral Science Support for JTRIG’s
Effects and Online HUMINT [Human Intelligence] Operations,’ which details
JTRIG’s activities, has recently been made public. It describes how the unit
uses tactics to manipulate public opinion based on scientific and
    psychological analyses.’

Glenn Greenwald and Andrew Fishman, who released the report, suggest
that the targets of these manipulations are “traditionally the province of law
    enforcement rather than intelligence agencies.”

The report states that the JTRIG works with such agencies as the Metropolitan
police, Security Service (MI5), Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), Border
Agency, Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and National Public Order and
    Intelligence Unit (NPOIU).

The GCHQ unit collaborates with the agencies, “providing intelligence for judicial
outcomes,” monitoring “domestic extremist groups such as the English Defence
League by conducting online HUMINT,” “denying, deterring or dissuading” criminals
and “hacktivists,” and “deterring, disrupting or degrading online consumerism of
    stolen data or child porn.”

Meanwhile, GCHQ spreadsheets recently published by the Intercept show that the
spy agency provides intelligence to the Bank of England, the Department for Children,
Schools and Families, departments dealing with agriculture and whaling activities,
government financial divisions, as well as police agencies and law enforcement
agencies to improve “civil and family justice.”

Although the British spy unit has been purported by officials to be involved in international
intelligence in places like Iran, Afghanistan and Argentina, “the closest the group seemed
to get to home was in its targeting of transnational ‘hacktivist’ group Anonymous,” the
    Intercept reported.

An August 2009 JTRIG memo entitled ‘Operational Highlights’ and cited by the Intercept
reportedly “boasts of 'GCHQ’s first serious crime effects operation' against a website that
was identifying police informants and members of a witness protection program.” Another
operation, according to the site, focused on an online forum which allegedly “used to
facilitate and execute online fraud.” GCHQ's support has also been credited with helping
“to assist the UK negotiating team on climate change,” according to the report.

“Beyond JTRIG’s targeting of Anonymous, other parts of GCHQ targeted political activists
deemed to be “radical,” even monitoring the visits of people to the WikiLeaks website,”
The Intercept reported, adding that “GCHQ also stated in one internal memo that it studied
and hacked popular software programs to 'enable police operations' and gave two examples
of cracking decryption software on behalf of the National Technical Assistance Centre, one
'a high-profile police case' and the other a child abuse investigation.”

Documents leaked by Snowden revealed that JTRIG's secretive activities descended to some
particularly ‘dirty tricks’ like deploying sexual ‘honey traps’ to discredit targets, launching
denial-of-service attacks to shut down internet chat rooms, pushing veiled propaganda onto
social networks and warping online discourse, just to name a few.

Uber is your Big Brother: It tracks you everywhere, even when you're not using the Uber app

Wednesday, July 01, 2015 by: Daniel Barker
Tags: Uber, data collection, privacy violations

Technology-Eye-Spy-Data‘Uber, the popular mobile ride-finding app, has been at the center
of controversy since its launch in 2009. Much of the uproar has been due to the fact that its
low-cost ride service poses a direct threat to the livelihood of cab drivers and other professional
drivers who claim that the competition is unfair, unethical and downright illegal. In March 2015,
Brussels cab drivers went on strike in protest of the Uber service, and since then, there has been
increasing pressure on the company regarding its practices.

In June, the debate reached a fever pitch when taxi drivers in France staged anti-Uber
demonstrations that turned violent, leading to a raid by police on the Uber headquarters
in Paris and the detainment of two Uber executives for questioning.’

However, there is another issue with the Uber smartphone app that has raised serious concerns
among the public and various privacy groups: Uber tracks and records information regarding
the location of passengers who use the service even when the app is not in use.

In the first years of its operations, Uber came under fire over charges that the company had
"casually" used the information it gathered with its "God View" technology, which gives the
company the capability of monitoring the location of all its drivers as well as users who have
flagged its vehicles. The company even reportedly shared some of this data with third parties
who did not work for Uber.Recently, however, it has been revealed that Uber's updated policy
tracks passengers and allows access to their personal information. The Electronic Privacy
Information Center in Washington, D.C., has called for the Federal Trade Commission to
conduct an investigation into the company's invasive practices.

The complaint filed by the EPIC reads:

Uber will claim the right to collect personal information and detailed location data of American
consumers, even when they are not using the service.Among the concerns raised by the EPIC
complaint is the fact that Uber employees have admitted to tracking the geo-locations and
other info regarding journalists who were questioning the company's policies. The EPIC also
points to the possible threat of hackers gaining access to users' personal information.

In the EU, regulators have been scrutinizing the company's privacy policies in an attempt to
determine if Uber is in compliance with European privacy laws. Among the EU regulations are
requirements that companies that use geo-location tracking must first obtain clear consent
    from the user.

EU guidelines also require the company to provide users with "comprehensive, easily accessible
and understandable notice" regarding their data collection policies and to allow users access to
their own collected data so that they can modify or delete particular details.

Finally, the regulations require that the data collected by companies such as Uber must be deleted
as soon as the information is no longer needed for the purpose for which it was obtained.

It is unclear at this point whether Uber has revised its policies to reflect the EU regulations or similar
privacy laws in the United States. The company has stated that it it amended its privacy policies to
address the concerns raised by various legal entities and privacy groups.

Hudging from Uber's past track record, there is plenty to remain concerned about. The company has
showed a clear disregard for the privacy rights of its users, not to mention their continued undermining
of the rights of cab drivers and other professionals throughout the world whose jobs have been
threatened by Uber's cheap, non-professional ride services.

NSA spied on German chancellor and ministers: Report

By ickonic on 2nd July 2015 Big Brother

‘New WikiLeaks documents show that the United States not only spied on
German Chancellor Angela Merkel but also on several ministers of the country.

Relations between Germany and the United States were strained after US
surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013 revealed extensive US
    foreign spying.

Snowden also revealed that the United States had monitored Merkel’s telephone
conversations for more than 10 years.’

The German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported on Wednesday that the National
Security Agency (NSA) did not limit its surveillance activities to Merkel, and spied
on the activities of the ministries of finance, economy and agriculture.

The newspaper said WikiLeaks had shown it a list of 69 phone numbers of ministers
and senior officials that were targeted by the NSA.

According to the report, current Economy Minister and Vice Chancellor Sigmar
Gabriel were among those snooped on by the US spy agency.

Snowden, a former NSA contractor, began leaking classified intelligence documents
in June 2013, revealing the extent of the NSA's spying activity.

Edward Snowden is seen via live video link from Russia on a computer screen
during a parliamentary hearing on the subject of "Improving the protection of
whistleblowers", on June 24, 2015, at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.

The disclosures have revealed that the NSA has been collecting the phone records
of millions of Americans and foreign nationals as well as political leaders around the world.

Snowden, who lives in Russia where he has been granted asylum, has said that US
government surveillance methods far surpass those of an ‘Orwellian’ state, referring
to George Orwell’s classic novel “1984,” which describes a society where personal
privacy is continuously invaded by spy agencies.

The Snowden revelations prompted Brazil and Germany to draft a United Nations
General Assembly resolution aimed at restraining the NSA’s surveillance programs
    against other nations.

‘Have you ever come across someone on the Internet that you suspected was a paid government troll?
Well, there is a very good chance that you were not imagining things.

Thanks to Edward Snowden, we now have solid proof that paid government trolls are using
“psychology-based influence techniques” on social media websites such as YouTube, Facebook
and Twitter. Documents leaked by Snowden also reveal that government agents have been
conducting denial-of-service attacks, flooding social media websites with thinly veiled propaganda
and have been purposely attempting to warp public discourse online. If we do not stand up and
object to this kind of Orwellian behavior, it is only going to get worse and worse.’

The UK admits to spying on Amnesty International

By ickonic on 3rd July 2015 Big Brother

‘In June, the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) ruled that the UK government had
illegally spied on two international civil rights groups: the Egyptian Initiative for
Personal Rights (EIPR) and the Legal Resources Centre in South Africa. But there was
a mix up — the IPT has now admitted it was Amnesty International, not EIPR, that
    was subjected to unlawful surveillance.

The human rights group was notified via email and has branded the interceptions as
outrageous. “How can we be expected to carry out our crucial work around the world
if human rights defenders and victims of abuses can now credibly believe their
confidential correspondence with us is likely to end up in the hands of the governments?”
Salil Shetty, secretary general for Amnesty International said.’

Exposed: Establishment-Funded ‘Security Network’ Spying On Users

By ickonic on 4th July 2015 Big Brother

‘An experiment by a Swedish researcher reveals that an online network
used to ensure secure Internet communications may itself be under
surveillance. Tor is free open source software and a popular open network
used to anonymize communications on the Internet.

In 2013 it received more than $1,800,00 in funding from the US government
and previous sponsors include; Google, The Ford Foundation and DARPA.

Tor stands for The Onion Router and was originally developed by the U.S. Naval
Research Laboratory. In 2002, the Electronic Frontier Foundation took up and
developed the project to provide a free means of ensuring the privacy of Internet
users. The number of Tor users is estimated to be 2.5 million each day.’

Wisconsin Votes To Hide All Government Actions From The Public

By ickonic on 5th July 2015 Coverups, Political Manipulation

‘ A Bill to hide government actions both large and small from public scrutiny
is quietly making its way through the Wisconsin legislature.

A budget committee voted to approve the bill Thursday along party lines with
only Republicans voting for it. It still must pass both houses and be signed
    into law by the governor.

The dismantling of Wisconsin’s open record laws is unprecedented and would
enable lawmakers to hide their actions from the media and the public. The
bill would effectively draw a curtain over the government’s actions as it would
extend to legislative aids, committee hearings, oversight, and all communications
even down to school board meetings.’
