MP Simon Danczuk to step back from child abuse campaign

Labour MP Simon Danczuk says he is stepping back from his campaigning work on child sexual abuse to seek help for depression.

The Rochdale MP said he had sought help from a psychiatrist because
hearing victims' accounts had taken its toll on his mental health.
In an interview with Becky Milligan for BBC Radio 4's The World at One,
he said it had also affected his marriage.

Mr Danczuk has been at the forefront of campaigning on child abuse allegations.
He previously investigated allegations against former MP Cyril Smith, and has
pressed the Home Office for action in relation to other historical abuse cases.

"I would say I have been suffering from depression to the point where I have
decided to seek help for that," he said, revealing that he had experienced
suicidal thoughts at times.He said he was "getting angry at stuff I shouldn't
be getting angry at, fairly mundane things" and becoming "aggressive - not
violently aggressive - but getting angry about things".

Mr Danczuk, who has been an MP since 2010, said he was "perhaps drinking
a bit too much", particularly after his meetings with abuse victims.He said
Parliament offered a regular "MOT" with a doctor who had referred him to a
psychiatrist, who had given him "permission" to step back from the work, he said.

Mr Danczuk, who recently separated from his wife, said he was "in no doubt"
it had take its toll on his marriage.

"It's not conducive to a happy relationship, is it," he said.

Asked about the effect of MPs' work on their mental health, he said there was
an expectation to be "tough" in politics, adding: "I do not think that's such a
virtue in this day and age."

‘The woman leading an enquiry into how Jimmy Savile has asked why
the BBC didn’t investigative claims even though one of its own TV
shows asked if he was a paedophile.

Dame Janet Smith is conducting a review into how Savile was able to
carry out sexual abuse of children and adults while at the corportation.

But investigative website Exaro says she has voiced her concern about
why the broadcaster failed to realise what was happening, despite hints
of paedophilia in one of its own programmes 15 years ago.’

Investigative website Exaro has found the woman leading the enquiry
into how Jimmy Savile abused children at the BBC, has asked why the
claims weren't investigated despite a programme hosted by Louis
Theroux hinting Savile was a paedophile

They found that Dame Janet, a former Court of Appeal judge, has asked
several BBC executives what enquiries were made about Savile as a result
of a documentary about him presented by Louis Theroux.

In the programme, Mr Theroux explicitly referred to the 'paedophile'
accusation against Savile, who at one time presented 'Jim'll Fix It.'

bargain, court documents have revealed.

His lawyers also succeeded in delaying letters being sent out to his alleged
victims informing them that their cases were not being pursued.

The letters were sent out the month after the plea deal was struck which gave
him immunity from further prosecution, according to newly released papers.

A judge has released a cache of sealed documents from his plea deal in 2008
that include emails from prosecutors to his lawyers that will fuel suspicions
they colluded to ensure he did not face the most serious charges.’

Historical abuse inquiries

The sexual abuse of children has left "scars" on victims and society, the
chair of an inquiry into historical abuse in England and Wales has said.
Justice Lowell Goddard was speaking as she opened the independent
inquiry, which she said could last until 2020.She said the task ahead was
daunting, but could expose past failures of institutions to defend children.

It will examine how public bodies handled their duty of care to protect
children from abuse.The inquiry was first announced by Home Secretary
Theresa May in July 2014. It followed claims of a high-level cover-up of
historical child sex abuse involving public figures, including politicians.

'Unique opportunity'

Justice Goddard, a New Zealand High Court judge who led an inquiry into
police handling of child abuse cases in her own country, was the third
person named to chair the inquiry - her two predecessors resigned over
concerns about their links with the establishment.

In her opening remarks, she said the sexual abuse of children "has left
permanent scars not only on successive generations, has left permanent
scars not only on victims themselves, but on society as a whole".

But she added: "This inquiry provides a unique opportunity to expose past
failures of institutions to protect children, to confront those responsible,
to uncover systemic failures... and to make recommendations that will help
prevent the sexual abuse and exploitation of children in the future."

Justice Goddard said there were suggestions that "one child in every 20
children in England and Wales has been sexually abused".

There may have been systematic under-recording and mis-recording of
child sex abuse by the police and other agencies, she said.She also said
it was important to emphasise that this is the largest and most ambitious
public inquiry ever established in England and Wales.Despite the size of
the investigation, she was "determined to ensure that it does not become
bogged down in the delays that have bedevilled some other public inquiries
in this jurisdiction".

What are the allegations?

In July last year, Labour MP Simon Danczuk called on Leon Brittan to say
what he knew about paedophile allegations passed to him when he was
home secretary in the 1980s. The files were given to Lord Brittan, who
died in January, by the late Conservative MP Geoffrey Dickens, a
long-standing campaigner against child abuse.

Mr Dickens's son has said the files - now missing - contained "explosive"
paedophile allegations about powerful and famous figures, including politicians.

Since Mr Danczuk's comments brought the so-called "Dickens dossier"
to the fore, the focus has moved to the wider issue of how historical
child sex abuse allegations were dealt with by public bodies and other
institutions across the country.Previously there had been calls for an
overarching investigation into historical abuse claims in the wake of
revelations that TV entertainer Jimmy Savile abused hundreds of victims
at hospitals, children's homes and schools.

The inquiry, which was given statutory powers and a new panel in February,
will investigate whether "public bodies and other non-state institutions have
taken seriously their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse in
England and Wales".Justice Goddard has decided abuse victims will not sit
on her advisory panel, but there will be a separate Victims and Survivors
Consultative Panel.

The advisory panel comprises Prof Alexis Jay of Strathclyde University,
Drusilla Sharpling of the police inspectorate, Prof Malcolm Evans of Bristol
University, and child protection barrister Ivor Frank.

Justice Goddard said she was determined to put as much information into
the public domain as she could, as soon as possible. She also referred to
annual reports being published, the first of which would be next year.

As she was giving her statement, the office of Attorney General Jeremy
Wright QC confirmed that immunity from prosecution under the Official
Secrets Act will be offered to current or former public servants prepared
to testify about allegations of child sex abuse.

It will not protect anyone who admits taking part in child sexual abuse.

Justice Goddard ended her statement by issuing a call for anyone with
information about sexual abuse cases to come forward. And she urged
institutions responsible for caring for children, which may come under
scrutiny, to take a "proactive stance towards the inquiry".

The NSPCC said a team of trained counsellors would operate a free
dedicated helpline to offer support on its behalf.

Peter Wanless, the charity's chief executive, said many victims had
"harrowing stories to tell", adding that the charity wanted to make
"what could be a tortuous journey as easy as possible".

The chairman of the Commons home affairs committee, Keith Vaz,
said the inquiry, which he described as a "once in a lifetime
opportunity", could last a decade.

"And of course we wish [Justice Goddard] luck in the very difficult job
that she's got, which could take up to ten years. I mean, this is going
to be a very long inquiry."

In February, it was announced Justice Goddard had been chosen to
lead the inquiry because she was "as removed as possible from the
organisations and institutions that might become the focus of the
inquiry", Mrs May said.

Baroness Butler-Sloss, the first inquiry chairwoman, resigned a week
after it was set up.This followed calls for her to quit because her late
brother, Sir Michael Havers, had been attorney general in the 1980s.
Her replacement, the then Lord Mayor of London Fiona Woolf, stood
down on 31 October amid concerns over her links to former Home
Secretary Lord Brittan.

‘The child sex abuse inquiry is set to last five years and cost up to £100 million,
it has been confirmed, as it emerged the Royal Household will not be exempt
from scrutiny over paedophile allegations.

Justice Lowell Goddard, the New Zealand High Court judge appointed to oversee
the official Government inquiry, pledged it will not hesitate to explore abuse in
the “corridors of power in Westminster”.

The inquiry will also use its powers to make allegations against “named individuals”
where necessary, she said.’


The scandal of BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile led to a new approach to child sex abuse cases


A statement from the inquiry later confirmed the monarchy will be “potentially within the
scope” of the hearings, following several allegations made in the last year involving the
Royal Household.

“There is no limit on the types of institutions that fall within the terms of reference,” a spokesman said.

“The monarchy is an institution and it runs a number of institutions, all of which are potentially
within the scope of the inquiry.”

homes in the poorest parts of the country, to hospitals, GP surgeries, schools, churches and charities.

"No-one, no matter how apparently powerful, will be allowed to obstruct our inquiry into
institutional failings and no-one will have immunity to scrutiny by virtue of their position.”

The inquiry may have to challenge "powerful private interests" such as internet service
providers carrying child sex abuse images or insurance companies which have been
accused of blocking claims by victims, she went on. The judge added that the sexual
abuse of children had left "scars" on victims and society, and the inquiry "provides an
opportunity to expose past failures of institutions to protect children". Justice Goddard
described the project as "the most ambitious public inquiry" ever undertaken in England and Wales.

It was set up last year amid claims of an Establishment cover-up following allegations that
a paedophile ring operated in Westminster in the 1980s.

However, it has been beset by delays and controversy.

The first two people selected to be the inquiry's chair - Baroness Butler-Sloss, a former senior
judge, and Dame Fiona Woolf, a prominent City lawyer – had to step down following accusations
that they were too close to the establishment to be independent.

Victims and survivors of child sexual abuse have been invited to speak in confidence to the
inquiry about their experiences – and suggest ways to improve protection for children.

Public hearings are due to begin in autumn next year.

Operation Pallial: Gordon Anglesea faces seven sex abuse charges

‘A retired north Wales police chief has been charged with sexually
abusing three boys in the 1970s and 80s.Former superintendent
Gordon Anglesea, 78, faces five allegations of sexual assault and
two of serious sexual assault between 1979 and 1987.

He was the 18th person to be arrested as part of Operation Pallial,
a probe into historical sex abuse claims at north Wales care homes.’

Mr Anglesea, from Old Colwyn, will appear before magistrates in August.

He was arrested in December 2013 as part of the investigation led
by the National Crime Agency.The NCA said the alleged victims were
ages between 11 and 16 at the time the assaults are said to have
taken place.He has been released on conditional bail and will appear
before Mold magistrates on 6 August.

Freddie Starr has lost his High Court claim against
Karin Ward, who said he groped her when she was 15.

Ms Ward, 56, alleges that the assault took place in 1974
behind the scenes of Jimmy Savile's Clunk Click TV show.

Mr Starr, 72, of Studley, Warwickshire, denied the claims
and sought damages for alleged slander and libel.

Judge Mr Justice Nicol said the case failed because Ms
Ward's testimony was found to be true, and because too
much time had lapsed.


The entertainer, who was not in court for the ruling, is
now reportedly facing a £1m costs bill and says he has
lost £300,000 from shows being cancelled over the allegations.


He sued over interviews given to the BBC and ITV in
October 2012, statements on a website and those made
in an eBook about Ms Ward's life.

'Wrecked marriages'

Mother-of-seven Ms Ward - who was a pupil at Duncroft
Approved School, in Staines, Surrey, in 1974 - told the
court Mr Starr had also made a lewd comment about her chest.

"I carried that phrase with me all my life and it certainly
helped to wreck three marriages," she said.

Ms Ward, from Oswestry, Shropshire, also said she was
sexually abused by Savile more than once in return for
being in the Clunk Click audience at BBC Television
Centre, London.

city of Detroit later this month, despite intensified protests by church leaders

‘Jozef Wesolowski, the first important Vatican official to be charged with paedophilia,
is set to stand trial in a Holy See court tomorrow.

The former Polish archbishop was the papal envoy to the Dominican Republic for five
years. In 2013, accusations emerged that he was involved in child abuse there, and
an investigation was launched by both Dominican and Vatican authorities.

A Vatican criminal hearing opened in September last year, shortly before which he had
been laicised – the Catholic term for defrocking, that forbade him from doing his ministerial work.’

He was indicted by a Vatican prosecutor last month, with the trial date set for tomorrow.
Wesolowski denies all the charges.His diplomatic immunity has also been revoked, which
meant that he could potentially have been tried in the Domincan Republic - however, as a
city-state, the Vatican has its own courts, and will try him there.

The maximum penalty Vatican courts could previously give was life imprisonment, but this
was abolished by Pope Francis shortly after he became Pope. Wesolowski could now face
the maximum penalty of 30 to 35 years in prison.

It is alleged that Wesolowski paid teenage boys for sex while living in the Dominican Republic.
An alleged victim told the New York Times last year that he would trawl the streets, offering
poor shoeshine boys large sums of money for sex.

‘Authorities in Northern Ireland are refusing to reveal what they know about
a notorious convicted paedophile with close links to a former government
adviser on the grounds of “national security”, despite official assurances that
two major inquiries will uncover the truth about an alleged child sex-abuse
ring involving leading members of the establishment.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) will not say if it holds information on
Dr Morris Fraser, a convicted paedophile, following a Freedom of Information request.

The revelation is likely to fuel suspicions that there was official collusion, for political
and security ends, surrounding the abuse of boys at, for example, the Kincora Boys’
Home in Belfast in the 1970s. The abuse continued for years, despite several people
alerting the authorities.’

‘There can be little doubt that there have been serious cover-ups over VIP child
sex abuse over the years. Now the Government should be allowed complete
access to all of MI5’s secret files which will reveal the names of those responsible,
says MP Tom Watson, who, three years ago, was the first to raise these allegations
in the House of Commons.’

He believes that in the course of the investigations, the Official Secrets Act
should be set aside in order for evidence to be gathered effectively.

Mr Watson said:


“The MI5 files are key to understanding who knew what and when.

“They might also reveal how reported crimes were not adequately investigated
and on whose orders.”

The inquiry into VIP paedophiles has run into constant problems since its inception
last year. A major difficulty has been in finding someone to lead the inquiry, as the
first candidate chosen, Lady Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, was found to have links to the
establishment and was removed from her position after only 6 days. Her replacement,
Fiona Woolf only stayed in the job for a month before stepping down.

In February 2015, a new leader of the inquiry was appointed with no links to the UK
establishment. Dame Lowell Goddard, a 66 year old judge from New Zealand, took up
the role of Chairman and prepared to lead the investigations. She has, however,
declared that all State departments will be required to comply with orders to release
files to the inquiry.

Although the evidence gathering process has been very lengthy, it appears that the inquiry
itself may now be ready to start, with a first year budget of £17.9 million.

Speaking to the Mirror newspaper, Mr Watson said:


“Police ­investigations into the serial sex abuse of Liberal MP Cyril Smith were closed down by
Special Branch in the 1970s, allowing him to ­terrorise children across four more decades.

“There are serious claims of an Establishment cover-up of allegations of paedophile abuse
involving the then Home Secretary Leon Brittan in the 1980s.

“It’s also now well-documented how police failed to prosecute senior British diplomat and MI6
operative Sir Peter Hayman in 1978 despite having a ­sickening stash of paedophile literature
and sexual fantasy diaries.”

The inquiry itself is likely to drag on until at least 2020, as the process involves up to 30 witness
hearings, all of which will take around 6 weeks, prolonging the investigation for over 3 years. By
the time the report is produced, it is likely that David Cameron will no longer be residing in Number 10.

Its clear from this interview that the establishment knew of the abuse allegation
at Kincora were going on in the 1970's. The cover up had to be political and the
decision to let the boys to be abused , was either for 'national security' or to
satisfy the sexual needs of powerfull people . Either way the state sanctioned
child abuse.

MPs over claims of child sex abuse, The Mail on Sunday has learned.

One of the informants, Labour MP John Mann, passed details about the
prominent individual to officers earlier this year.

Then, a fortnight ago, a Conservative MP went to the same police force
armed with information about the same individual, some of which had
been provided to him by a former Government Minister.

It is believed to be the first time that a sitting MP has been scrutinised
by any of the ongoing police investigations into child abuse, representing
a further extension of the ever-widening sphere of historic sex allegations.’

‘The suspected abduction and murder of a 15-year-old lad by a VIP paedophile
ring in Britain is featured in a TV documentary Sunday night, writes Nick Dorman
in the Sunday People.

Martin Allen’s disappearance is probed by Australia’s Channel 9 on its 60 Minutes
show which can be viewed in the UK online.

Martin, son of the chauffeur of the Australian High Commissioner in London, vanished in 1979.

He was last seen boarding a Tube train at Kings Cross station.’

Martin's brother Kevin was interviewed for the show.

He said: “A senior policeman told me ‘if you keep saying things like that, someone’s
going to get hurt.

He added: “I smell rats of the highest order.”

The show will claim that senior police officers halted an investigation to protect
powerful people.
