WHITE WALLS

As I mosey through the doorway’s frame, blaze; my mind elsewhere,

The forefront of my mind unregistered I once lived there.

Through my second nature, so abrupt I flick a switch,

Cradled bulb illuminates the dark; a guided twitch.

I only make a single step halfway across the room

before nostalgia hits my head, another seen full moon.

Memories and lingered ghosts waft from wood to wall,

Pressing on my person, causing me to stop and stall.

On the spot my arms fall down, my mission caused to halt,

Suddenly I’m a stunned moth, my eyes begin to jolt.

Forgotten pennies echo sound as in a heap they drop,

I shake my head and utter breath expecting them to stop.

As if awaiting for my soul to consciously climb stair,

They shout and dance a welcome song so sick of waiting there.

The white walls open up their traps and let the natives out,

I feel a smile is in accord to watch them dance about.

Leaping high from wall to wall the air becomes so thick,

They’re crying out “remember us?! We stayed here in good nick!”

“How could I forget?” I say, although I moved along,

The essence of my growing up remained there pulsing strong.

The white walls gussy themselves up whenever I pass through,

Although fresh bed sheets have been laid the room is never new.

I see my youth; I see myself and re-live every day,

In a moment my new life is quickly washed away.

I stand once more in pleated skirt within my scuffed school shoes,

Feeling how I felt back then; re-living all my blues.

Hearing all the songs I played and watching how we danced,

Remembering my company, I watch still deep entranced.

I once again kick through the mess I once had on the floor,

Remembering the moves I made once I had closed the door.

Once again I hear the knock of pitter-patter hands;

a baby sister wanting in to see the big-girl lands.

The white walls link then into now and gently remind me,

They were the womb of my growth and the adult who I’d be.

The single window grins at me and winks her smirking eye,

As I close her she recounts my stories with a sigh.

Almost sad I lived those days within a flustered rush,

I hear each phone call I once made within the buzzing hush.

I call my hindsight in the room to see if I regret,

But still there’s nothing I can see of which I would change yet.

As I draw the blinds and hear the noises which they make,

I take to heart and pocket it, it’s mine; I own that quake.

That rattling belongs to me; I own that closing sound,

I made it every night before my head was pillow-bound.

As I swiftly turn around and leave my teenage room,

I marvel how that bed was where this flower was to bloom.

I leave the head space of that time there as I close the door

And realise for the first time I don’t live there anymore.

Gtwin, thank you for the poem and memories. I felt I was walking back through my own youth as I read.

Life is tumbling along so fast. At the moment it's all about the garden--it's growing tremendously and some plants could be picked twice a day, not kidding.

Does anybody want to see pictures? I put some more on my profile page, under the Home and Family album.

The veggies are piling up in the kitchen. This evening I'm putting up some fermented vegetables. Summer squash, zucchini, peppers, and carrots. And making salsa to give away.

Little Japanese eggplant disks are roasting in the oven to become baba ganoush.

I have two harvest baskets on hooks in the hallway, with a little knife tucked inside one, to grab on the way out the door to the garden. Something about it gives me so much pleasure, reminding me of my mom and the way she has lived her life. As long as I can remember, she's had a metal dishpan on a nail on the back porch. The screen door just a step away. The memory of those sounds, the screen door slamming closed, the scrape of metal pan against nail, the feel of it, warm from the heat as we walked to the garden. It's the same garden I have now, the very same space.

So Gtwin, your poem was so appropro to read just now. Thank you.

She said something that I think would benefit the members here and hoepfully she would understand why I'm posting it as she said something pertaining to Avalon in a members only thread which most here can't read. It's a positive note and maybe will bring a little closure to hurts suffered on both sides, so Ill take the risk. She did not want to see Avalon bashed and appologized for having it happen. She took the word of someone without asking if it was true or not and now regrets what happened after seeing the fallout.

Thank you mojo. I hope this positive message is not deleted as I am thinking deleted material may have been a cause of some misunderstanding through speculation as to its content.

Some news of my sister-in-law. She has had her entire stomach removed, and despite a prognosis that is not good, her morale is amazingly high, notably because she feels better than for a long time, as if something harmful has finally gone. Many thanks to all for your support.

Marianne, those vegetables of yours are enough to make a guy green with envy if I were that way inclined Gardening is just one of the countless things I do very badly; I have to say this because, since writing a decent post is one of the exceptions to that rule, anyone reading me here is likely getting a false picture of who I really am.

Obviously, one of the marvelous things the Internet has done is to greatly expand the group of people I call friends. Some, I have met in-person; many I have not (yet.) One friend is a woman in Texas that withheld the information that she had cancer until after she had had surgery. It was a rare form of cervical cancer, but was already metastasizing throughout her body. Because of the rarity of the particular cancer, a university-affiliated teaching hospital in Texas wanted to "study her." The impression I got was that they had already given up on her, they knew she was going to be consumed by the cancer, and they wanted to document it. Screw that!

So, when I found out, my first thought was getting cannabis oil in her. Not legal in Texas, so I recommended a move (even if temporary) to Colorado, where she could get the oil. She couldn't afford it. She got listed in a group founded as cannabis oil advocates that (somehow) match donor funds with patients that need the oil. Nothing came of that. In the meantime, I recommended that she "alkalinize" her body, and sent half a dozen web links to information for doing so. Plus, my mother-in-law had just died, never having tried the Essiac tea I sent her, and that was returned to me, unopened, after her death. So, I sent the Essiac tea (with sorrel root) to my friend. She prepared it, and drank it, as well as her new diet to alkalinize her body (and I had also recommended nothing but organics, lots of fruits/fruit smoothies, and pure spring water - which was available to her locally.) And, of course, I sent "healing vibes" and love to her as well. (I am still unsure as to how much - if any - healing energy can be transmitted over a distance by anyone, especially someone like me that doesn't have any "special powers", but I do it anyway.)

Fast forward a couple of months... My friend went for a check-up and was declared "cancer free!"

Truly worth sharing, Dennis, and your comments were spot on.
But for me there was that extra element of my memory of meeting him, when he was still Cat Stevens.
I had this Greek friend, Costi, who used to fly with him to Brazil, and one night Costi invited him, his buddy or bodyguard, a huge guy anyway, myself and my ex husband to a dinner in a tiny Greek restaurant in Knightsbridge London, and we were the only people there.
And I was so star struck, and too shy to think of relevant questions, lacking confidence, that all I remember is this bodyguard fellow who was with him eating a whole baked Alaska which normally served ten people, and he ate it all by himself. And there was also some chatter about Rio, and the amazing girls there.

That must have been in the mid seventies. He was a serious fellow, and perhaps like me was attracted to the exuberance of our mutual friend Costi, with whom he had been friends for a long time, both being Greeks who lived in London. So whenever one of these incredibly talented people with whom I crossed paths me are mentioned I just have lots of regrets about having been too shy, and not knowing how to get them to open up more the way some journalist interviewers can. It is an art to put someone like that at ease.

The astrology of this week is still around emotional connections and the influence of past relationships (going all the way back to mom and dad and previous lives) on current feelings, needs, fears, and desires. This New Moon in Cancer feels like we are collectively preparing to give birth to a new "Us" and are feeling the contractions. An insecure time when we all feel great changes are at hand but there is a huge "not knowing" of just what lies ahead.
