What we hear in the first movie about using humans as a power source is nonsense; humans consume energy, they don't produce it.
Oh, I don't know. I always thought the human-batteries material in the first movie was a reference to the concept of "Loosh" that Robert Monroe talked about in one of his books. Supposedly, humans give off a lot of emotional energy that supposedly could be of use to entities who are non-physical. But, I have no experience of it that I can contribute to the validity of that possibility. It was just a conclusion I made about everything, based on things I've read over the years.

I also felt that Bram Stoker's Dracula was also a reference to the same thing. Vampires are a reference to the non-physical beings who feed off of our emotional energy. Later on when I found out that Stoker was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Kights of the Golden Dawn, that was kind of a convincer for me, as it seems he may have had some education on the non-physical aspects of our neck of the universe...
For what it's worth, in the movie Morpheus explains that the human power is "combined with a form of fusion"

I think the original concept for the movie the human mind was meant to be used as a single node on a complex neural network so that humans added more processing power to the matrix system, which makes more sense than just using them for power and explained why keeping them in a persistant vegetative state wouldn't make sense, I think the movie would still work as the threat of too many minds leaving the system would remove capacity and processing from the Matrix. In fact, humans produce heat and radiate heat, but not so much that you could really harness it for power. Additionally, life in all organic forms is solar powered. We are solar powered in the sense that what we eat was solar powered, or what they ate was, so on.

Oh. I think I see where I've misunderstood your posts a little. I didn't realize that you were mainly sticking to the content of the story and not expanding to discuss the various metaphors that the movie alludes to. For example, when Neo goes through the whole process of getting unplugged and tutored by Morpheus, a lot of people believe that is a metaphor that equates in real life to the concept of "awakening." I didn't mean to sidetrack the thread if you weren't intending to ponder about things in real life that various parts of the movie might relate to.

"Real life." (Yeah, I'm grinning about that choice of words too...)
