Over 30 years ago, when I was 7, living in southern California, near Los Angeles... I saw and had a close encounter with a UFO, shaped very similarly to typical flying saucer reports, but it was completely covered with lights.
The experience began while playing outside in our yard, which was kinda like a small junkyard (playground to me at the time), with several broken down cars... as my dad was an independent professional car mechanic and used the cars for spare parts. I was with my little brother, (one year younger than I), just as it was getting dark at the end of the day. At the time my parents were out bowling and we were being 'watched'/babysat by my older sister. At first we saw the craft at a far distance and it was slowly moving across the sky, towards our general direction at an estimated altitude of around 1,500-2,000 feet. As it moved closer on a straight line trajectory, the underside could clearly be seen to be completely covered with hundreds of blinking lights... and it was traveling completely silently, without ever making a sound.
The 'craft' continued on it's straight-line path beyond our location at about the same altitude, and began getting further away. This was by far the most amazing thing I'd ever seen in the sky as a 7 year-old, and I didn't want it to leave... so I had an inspiration to run and get a small chalkboard which we used to practice our ABC's on. I then drew a quick chalk sketch of what the craft looked like... and climbed on top of one of the junk cars with the chalkboard drawing and attempted to signal to the 'ship'. To my amazement and delight the craft stopped it's movement, then began coming back in our direction slowly until it arrived directly overhead... when it then began to slowly descend to an estimated altitude of less than 500 feet.
At that altitude I could clearly see the individual lights covering the whole bottom-side were actually uniformly lit and rectangular-shaped solid light panels, with various shades of color... some light blue, some light green, orange, pink, yellow, turquoise... and they were all blinking on and off at different rates, kind of like an ultimate Christmas light arrangement of some kind. These rectangular (almost perfectly square-shaped) light panels were arranged in rings within rings patterns across almost the whole underside, with very little space between each light panel.
It was then approached by a couple helicopters, and it started gaining altitude and moving back towards the original direction it came from. More jets and helicopters approached and chased after the craft, forming a line of pursuit as they all moved off into the distance.
So that's the basic 'rundown', with the whole experience/encounter lasting around 10 minutes. I would estimate the diameter of the craft to be around 75-100 feet.
