Hello to All.

Today, I was invited to my sister’s daughter-in-law baby shower. Included were the moms’ kids, and lot and lots of babies. It was held in a hotel with full breakfast and dinner buffet and drinks of all kinds. (One of the financial benefits from mother, mother-in-law, step-mothers itching to welcome in their first grand child.)

This was new and a great idea. We were instructed to not wrap the gifts. They were put on display. I surmised that guests used the time to eat and greet at our assigned seating. And, it saves trees, the dumps and dollars.

A niece shared that her five year old daughter, who’s in kindergarten, was one of four girls in a classroom of fourteen. I inquired on how many other kindergartens in the system. One other and the ratio was about the same. If this is accurate, it’s very telling.

My niece also shared that her daughter got a second notice sent home because she didn’t do her homework. When the niece asked her daughter why, she replied, “I didn’t want to.”

My heart aches for these poor little ones. Common core = frustrate these light sparks and dumb them down.

All in all it was a fun time. Then my unpredictable “time to leave in ninja-invisibility-style” gene switched on. I altered my frequency and walked out without notice. Back to my no-clock-time cave. It gets cozier and cozier as the years roll along.

Me too! i prefer an 'annoying' ticking clock to any other noise. I can turn on media. Perhaps I am hiding from my former life, easy to close doors, responsibilities gone (parents, pets, partner, son), just don't want to progress and that is bad. Learning online is great, and gardening. Wade has helped - so much to read, and so exciting!

Every once in a while I ask if I've checked out, i.e. hiding, not progressing? The answer comes up the same: I'm In-Joying and learning.

I love not being tethered to a clock or rules of when to eat, sleep, do laundry, grocery shop, etc.

I created this life and am just as grateful today, as the day I walked away from the no-clock-world in 2004.

Oh man, Paula, i'll bet your ninja invisibility is downright impeccable in those instances...had me laughing!

But i'll bet my technique even rivals yours.....ive become so proficient at escaping awkward social situations without detection that my friends used to call me "Houdini".

My escapes were so notorious that, if I was with a group of say 3 or more people, theyd all paper-scissors-rock to see who was going to take on the responsibility of shadowing me...especially if I was driving.(note: I hated driving people to social functions, downtown, bars so forth...But since I always insist on driving myself(simply to control my own fate) people just assume they can tag along. And i'd let them..as long as they understood that I might wanna come home in 20 mins, 40 mins, I never knew. I might wanna stay all night, who knows? I'm very unpredictable that way...even I don't know what i'm gonna do. Furthermore, i'd tell them that I wasnt going to waste 20 seconds looking around for them in crowded bars when I was ready to go...better keep an eye on me. Because when i'm ready to go, i'm ready to go. I'd make sure everyone was very clear on this... and theyd swear up n down they were...but every f#cking time there'd be some winer complaining about this n that, nevermind that I was driving them around on my dime, my time...AND I was taking all the risk by driving after drinking. But someone always had a complaint...unreal...)

So anyway...thats how "Houdini" was born. And he still lives on today. The skill has gotten me out of many a social situation. And youre right, theres nothing quite like getting home after you know youre scott free..nothing like turning off the phone and embracing the solitude..

Mike, I soooo relate to your post. Fortunately, I live in a different state than three of my siblings. Which is the perfect, built-in excuse to go solo and noncommittal. Though, I admit on the noncommittal part, I may be in need of an intervention.

Somewhere along the way it all got squeezed out of me. Either that or the ET's came down and tinkered with me.



As for turning off the phone? My home phone is always unplugged. The cell phone only works three miles down the road. (As mentioned…in need of an intervention.) To quote Cal, "My bad."
